Louis "Shrek" Oosthuizen - Best Golf Nickname Ever?
Was it just me and my extreme immaturity, or did anyone else absolutely lose it when you found out that Oosthuizen's buddies call him "Shrek" because of the space between his teeth? Even still when I think of this, it makes me chuckle. It's just the same kind of ball busting that I'm sure most of us do with our chronies. We actually also call one of my long time friends "Shrek" because of the size of his enormous head.
When hearing this hilarious and "affectionate" moniker for Louis given by his loving friends, it made me think of some of the other great nicknames on Tour (present and past) and weigh them against "Shrek". What do you think the greatest golfer nickname is?
After the jump, a sampling of some from over the years and how Shrek compares.
- Ernie Els = "The Big Easy"
- Greg Norman = "The Shark"
- Jack Nicklaus = "The Golden Bear"
- Phil Mickelson = "Lefty" (or as one of my buddies calls him "Pear Hips", or even "Tits")
- Paul Goydos = "Sunshine"
- Tim Herron = "Lumpy"
- Jim Mackay = "Bones" (caddies should be considered as well!)
- Mike Cowan = "Fluff" (see above)
- Gary Player = "The Black Knight"
- Craig Stadler = "The Walrus"
- Fred Couples = "Boom Boom"
- Eldrick Woods = "Tiger" (yeah I know that's legally his name now, but still...)
I really like "Shrek" and I think it may be in my top 3, but I still have to go with "Lumpy" Herron. Was there ever a more fitting nickname for a player?

HA !! I didn’t know Goydos’ nickname is “Sunshine” – that’s great.
I like Shrek a lot – but my personal favorite is still Boom Boom just because Couples is a long time favorite. Always liked “The Merry Mex” for Lee Trevino, too.

FIGJAM is great too… I actually just learned that about him. Too funny.
“Sunshine” is definitely Goydos. I’m sure there are a few for Sabbatini too, some not too kind.

It means
acronym for "F**k I’m great, just ask me." I don’t know who started it , but I hear it was started as a joke by another player that was a friend of Phils during a practice round. I’m curious myself now, I’ll have to make a few calls unless anyone else knows who started it ?

FIGJAM wasn’t made up for Mickelson – but it sure caught on when applied to him. I remember guys being called FIGJAM back when I was in high school.
Wonder if it’s military like Snafu.

Well, he had to be pretty damn good to keep his sitcom on the air
for many years sans a single funny piece of humor.
come on – homespun Mayberry humor on a marine base wasn’t funny ?

Barney Fife made that show. I watched one episode of Pyle to
realize it was indeeed a pile.
And of Course
Let us not forget one of my favorite people, client and player, Jimenez, “The Mechanic” as he is an avid car collector and loves working on them.

One of the guys in my group started calling me.....
Mr. Golf, and now it has caught on. I hear it usually when I do something real good or real bad…….term of endearment…….maybe?? maybe not!!!
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Jimenez is a client of yours?
Wow! Smashing man. I was obviously in a minority for liking his pale yellow outfit in The Open.
Ugghhh!! Ugliest outfit of the day, Daly included.
Shirt didn’t coordinate with the pants.
He was in a clash by himself.
Does Ben Crane get “The Human Rain Delay” by himself ? Or does he have to share it with Langer and Furyk ?

I think my nickname must be "Luv"
as in greetings/comments to me of "Mornin Luv, Aft’noon Luv, You’re away Luv, Nice Shot Luv, Unlucky Luv! I’d be disappointed if you told me it was simply generic.
Hey LUV...it
