The Final Open Open Thread: Can Oosthuizen Win the Jug?

It's quarter to 11 on the east coast as I start this final round Open thread and the South African is five clear of the field.  Seems almost inevitable that he will win, but he did give a glimmer of hope with a wayward approach on the 5th.

Any challengers going to step up?

Oh, and Tiger's back with the Cameron putter.

Oosti just let go of his driver as he finished his swing on the 9th hole.

I didn’t watch nearly as much golf years ago as I do now, but I don’t recall Jack, Arnie, Gary or any of the golfers of that era letting go of the club in their follow-through as I see so many pros do so often these days, Tiger included.

Am I wrong? If not, why does it happen so often now?

Also, should I sell my BP stock or hold it?

(More interested in the latter.)

Everybody does it now and then. Back in the wooden driver head years, you had to be a bit more careful with slamming those clubs. You could crack an insert, or worse, the hosel, or bend a metal shaft. These clubs today are less likely to get broken.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear, Court. I didn't mean "slamming" the driver.

I meant letting go with the left hand on the follow-through. I just don’t recall yesteryear’s players doing that at all.

I know what you meant – and it’s not new – people have been flinging clubs and letting go on the follow through when they saw the ball heading to evil parts of the golf course. The club gets banged around – that gravity thing, you know. :-)

Oosthuizen has been really impressive. He is killing the ball.

He's steady as a rock, a smiling rock.

This tourney is over, unless Oosti lands in about 4 tough bunkers.

Looks like he pretty well has it sewn up. That bad drive at 12 just ended the day for Casey.

How about Jin Jeong, the amateur ? that’s really impressive.

Tirico must go...

…he is too much of a Tiger worshipper. Ooosthuizen leads by 8, but Tirco won’t compare it to Woods.

Tirico spent the majority of the day

Comparing everyone else and every shot all day to Tiger. Waaaaaay over the top. As bad as TGC. The groveling never ends. Glad to see I’m not the only one that notices such things.

Nobody win's ProGolf's contest, but thanks, PG, for posting it.

For your effort, I’m sending you a dozen Titleists. It should be at about this point that you realize they might get lost in the mail.

lol thanks TXQ

I may take a look at who picked who later and perhaps there will be a consolation prize for being close. I plan on doing it again for the PGA in August.

I can tell you now - it was me, it was me, it was meeee!

Well, closer but not close enough. (Not that I competitively had everyone else’s picks noted and swished them off as they went out of the running – much). Never mind that ol misog STUB, (you can’t get sheared if there was NO charge) it was fun while it lasted PG. Look forward to the PGA.

why thank you wendy

I dont worry about ole Stubbo, remember it was I that dragged him over to waggleroom from the golf channel blogs. The only one getting sheared on a contest is Stub as he is going to owe me 12 lbs of shrimp come the end of the LPGA season with our little Michelle Wie bet. LOL Should be interesting to see if he actually ponies up and pays me off.

Someone from another site just noted ...

If O hangs on, last 4 major winners from 4 different continents.

Does that mean the PGA will be won by an Adam Scott, Robert Allenby, or Camillo Villegas ? :-)

Yep – she’s VERY attractive. (should we assume you’ll be getting some of those boots for the girlfriend ?)

Glad to see him shut the mouths of the groveling idiots over at the Golf Channel that did nothing but talk about tiger all week.

You can bet the ranch or two on this:

If Letterman has Oosti as a guest, one of the Top Ten jokes will refer to their both having a gap between their front teeth.
