Do the Math: Mark Calcavecchia Assured Second Place After 36 Holes?
Like outright leader Louis Oosthuizen, 50 year old Mark Calcavecchia has been the beneficiary of a favorable, early tee time at St. Andrews. Going out in the wee hours of the American morning, both posted great scores of 67 before the wind rolled into the Old Course.
It got so windy that a one hour and five minute high wind delay stopped play earlier this morning. Though play has resumed, scoring has not returned because conditions do not resemble what Calc and Oosthuizen saw earlier. It is very likely that these two men will be the final pairing tomorrow afternoon - or whenever today's delay pushes the start of the third round for the leaders.
Calc's round was well balanced - no bogeys, five birdies. There were two birdies on the front and three on the back, including a sharp finish at the 18th.
To be fair to the other old guy in the field that is playing well, American Tom Lehman posted 68 earlier as well to finish the opening 36 at -5. Lehman, too, birdied the last to turn in his round.
Both cannot really move up the leaderboard at all. Oosthuizen (pronounced woost-HAY-zen) stands in the way of Calc by five. Lehman is blocked by those two, as well as the duo of Englishmen Paul Casey and Lee Westwood, who are both through two rounds on -6.
It just so happens that both are former Open champions ('89, '96 respectively) and that their only major wins came in this championship. Their combined age now? 100.

ummm – no – he’s not – but it’s a nice thought. there are plenty of guys on the course within a shot or two of Calc’s -7 total who can get to -8.
and it’s WEST-hay-zen – according to Louis WEST-hay-zen in an interview with Wendy Nix early this morning after his round.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Nice to see Calc doing well.
Well liked on tour and a good family man.

Weather is usually a factor
In almost every tournament, Heat , Wind, Cold, Rain, mud balls etc etc. Every player on tour has been through both sides of the weather draw in one tournament or another. At the end of the season it all seems to balance itself out.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Sure, but today makes me wonder what an amateur like, say,
Jack Lemmon would shoot on this course. Haunting.
Perhaps TXQ, regarding an Amateur like Lemmon
But it could also have an opposite result, no expectations, just glad to be there could result in a low score.
