Play Is Suspended in Second Round of Open Championship

Despite the total lack of rain at the Old Course right now, it's just too windy for players to be able to mark and unmark their balls on putting surfaces without danger of it moving.  Since the high wind and its impact are detrimental to the players experiencing it, play has been suspended by the R&A.

The most exposed parts of St. Andrews are around the seventh and eighth holes - going out toward the loop back into the clubhouse. Apparently, Jason Duffner lobbied for the suspension of play when his ball moved less than a foot on the 7th green.  Current thinking is that the grass on the putting surfaces is too short to handle the otherwise playable wind.

The delay will likely be short, but play is suspended until playable conditions settle in at the Old Course.

UPDATE 10:45am EDT - play has resumed at the Open, and Tiger bogeyed the first.

When you get out to the loop,

The 7th, 11th and 12th are right out there, the wind is moving the ball on the green after you mark it. Better this than players getting penalised for a moving ball. Only 10 on the stimpmeter, but the slopes on the 11th you probably couldn’t putt .

I’m not the crying kind, but left the room the 2nd time round with a lump in my throat.

Not to buy one - just to use one

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

We pay a licenece

because the BBC has no ads. We only had 3 channels on TV 35 years ago . A licence funded the Tv progarames before ads came along on ITV. For the Open, that’s 9 am until 7 pm uninterupted coverage.

a tax by any other name...

…is still a tax. When the government is in charge – it’s a tax. I wonder how much American companies are charged to carry BBC programming.

I don't mind tax

Yes – that’s over there. Over here, the government is SUPPOSED to be limited and kept out of the way of the people – but that’s been slowly disappearing since FDR

there is no such thing as a “coalition” government – and the US is going to prove that before too long when we officially abandon the Constitution and fold into some sort of communist framework because the liberals think a country can tax itself into prosperity – but the number of people actually earning enoough to pay taxes dwindle.

There's only one TW for us over here

Tom Watson received fantastic farewell from crowd at St. Andrews. We’ll never take the other TW to our hearts in this way no matter how many majors he wins.

by WendyUK on Jul 17, 2010 5:31 AM EDT reply actions

Wendy......most of us over here won't either!

Palmer, Nicklaus and Watson all are men with three obvious qualities…..Great Golf , Great Character, and Great Class……that other TW fellow only has great golf. Hopefully he won’t break the majors record.

The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Jul 17, 2010 6:31 AM EDT up reply actions

people hated Nicklaus for a long time, too. Bobby Jones walked off of St Andrews cursing it all the way – and look how he was eventually loved. You guys hated your own Nick Faldo for a long time…something I’ll never understand – people chose tabloids over the player. Time can heal all kinds of things.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

by courtgolf on Jul 17, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Bit sweeping

Hatred of Nicklaus/Jones before my time. UK Media disliked Faldo – not general public. I went off him when he didn’t address a single word to his rookie playing partner in a Ryder Cup match. Didn’t matter if he wasn’t exactly chatty when just playing for himself. Tom has always been loved over here. Woods will always be respected as a great or the greatest player but not loved. Unlike em66 I have no problem with him breaking the majors record, however.

by WendyUK on Jul 17, 2010 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

sigh – ok – I didn’t say YOU – I’m pretty sure that I know that you’re not a contemporary of Nicklaus OR Bobby Jones…then again, you do work at night…any vampirism in the family ? :-)

I’m saying that just because you don’t like or respect Woods now doesn’t mean that in the years to come, he won’t be looked at as a different man after all the things he’s putting himself through these days.

Benefit of being self-employed is flexible working hours. Or are you confusing time difference? Garlic says no, unless vamprism can skip generations.

We’ll see re the other TW in 20 yrs.

by WendyUK on Jul 17, 2010 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Faldo was playing with Gilford at the'91 Ryder cup

In his book, Faldo apoligised to David Gilford for the lack of leadership he showed his rookie partner. He admitted he should have done better, but he did say they were both quiet types and they both found it touch to chat to each other. The golfing public, however, loved Faldo, not like Seve…he is our king. But Faldo was always cheered big time from the public. The Media went for his throat every time.

by Easingwold on Jul 17, 2010 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Too little, too late, Easing

His comment that I recall was “we were both professionals” but it was totally selfish IMO. He always liked to play with someone he considered a winning partner – not good with rookies. Never hated as Court contends by British public – simply disliked by British media. Seve & Tom Watson have a place in our hearts – Woods is unlikely to achieve the same and that has nothing to do with events over the last year.

by WendyUK on Jul 17, 2010 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Woods and Faldo

are the same…winning is all that matters. Seve and Watson were different types…they lost a lot too. Would we think the same of Watson if he didn’t figure in the playoff last year ? I doubt that very much. Faldo played in the Ryder cup at the time when the best players did all the scoring…half the team didn’t…in that light you can understand why they wanted the best partner. Seve had Olly…Faldo had Woosie and Monty. It’s something one has to consider when judging the old gaurd that paved the way for todays superstars.
