The Open Championship Open Thread (No, Really) - Day One
The Open Championship is in the second half of the day, but we'll have an open Open thread for the remainder of it, as well as for all four rounds.
Have at it!

Do you think the nay-sayers on Tiger’s putter will knock it off after his performance today ? Six birdies, and his only bogie had nothing to do with the putter. His lag putting was strong. (and someone please tell Azinger that the putter doesn’t have grooves – that is a linear insert)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
he putted well today,
but he missed putts inside 6 feet on last 2 holes
Let’s see how he does over the remaining 54 holes before we pass judgment.
No doubt he putted better than he has all year, however.

12th hole
Is that a new-ish tee box ? I don’t remember the tee box right up against the water like that.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Me either. I was wondering if I had simply forgotten or if it were new.

Charles, you just won PG's contest by properly using the
subjunctive. Kudos!
Gotta Love John Daly
He shot a -6/66 today and could easily shoot a +5/77 tomorrow.

Is there anybody in that under par group that you couldn’t say the same thing about ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Sure
But Daly more so.

Yep, this one with
his shirt off and wearing shorts….ya gotta love it…..STUB
Looking at that would be a sure bet to help Vogue’s readers get that human stick-figure that they seem to crave so much!

Hey OMP...the women love
a man who reads Vogue and other of their magazines….It shows a REAL MANS more feminine side, and they just love that…..Poor misguided ladies…jist sayin……STUB
FANTASTIC !
Wow – what a shot by Westwood at 17 ! That ball couldn’t have gotten above his head, and rolled to what…12 feet or so ? Ricocheted off a little hump in front of him. (if you had seen me play and I said that I taught him that shot…you’d probably beleve me) :-)

I want that job !
I knew that the caddies didn’t rake bunkers at The Open – but I didn’t realize that each group has a guy walking with them to rake any bunker they might hit into. I thought they just had people in the areas where shots landed and by the greens.
Talk about a cool job as a volunteer.

Will you settle for the beer cart?

BLASPHEMY !! Beer carts should always be run by a hot chick. :-D

Are you sure you weren't one of the team
who sabotaged Sergio’s chances when Harrington won The Open? You know, when you wouldn’t put the rake down, made little circles in the sand, stepped back to admire your work, stepped in again, redesigned your artwork, etc., for 10 minutes at least?
no – I was underground spring loading the flag sticks before every approach shot by Sergio – they were all against him, you know.

Pretty sweet up and out by Monty at the Road Hole Bunker. Leave it to Azinger to call it lucky instead of a well executed shot.

Azinger: Not My Favorite
He’s OK, but there are a lot of others I would much rather listen to.

I bet Ben Crane loves the slow play

Ben’s sped up this year. He’s now slightly faster than an Antarctic glacier on a cold day.

I heard one of the announcers say that some of the early players finished in 3 hours.
Hard to believe. And it surely couldn’t have happened had Crane been the first to tee off.
I think you heard them talking about McIlroy’s practice round on Wednesday – he was out and back very quickly. Nothing fast out there today.

You're probably right, Court, and even if you're dead wrong
you could no doubt convince me otherwise.
Four and 1/2 half hour rounds with shared greens/fairways
was no mean feat for the morning rounds (for the pros). A bit slower in the afternoon.
Have to love Links courses
The weather can change in a heartbeat.

Hmm. Perhaps Poulter isn't as bright as I thought.
ESPN just aired a clip of his describing the Road Hole bunker: “If you’re in there, you definitely want to get out.”
As Neil Young once said, “Sheer profundity.”
