Tiger Woods Switches to Nike Method Putter for Slow Open Greens
Tiger Woods' press conference this morning was a dichotomous twenty minute session. Woods was peppered by the European press about questions concerning his personal life. For American reports - more professional and weary of non-answers through Woods' entire career about his off-course behavior - the session had some revelations about how Woods will handle St. Andrews.
For one thing, Woods has changed putters for this week. He has abandoned the Scotty Cameron putter that he has used for 13 of his fourteen major wins in lieu of the Nike Method 001 putter. The putter, which is in my bag, has a polymer-infused face whose major design goal is to get the ball rolling with topspin faster after impact. The polymer leaves the face with sections of metal that "grab" the ball and get it going more quickly to the target.
Woods feels that this putter will help him get the ball moving more quickly on the Open greens which are not even running at 10 on the Stimpmeter just days before the Open. With rain in the forecast for tournament week, St. Andrews' massive greens may not play much faster than your local muni - which, to locals, the Old Course is.
"I've always been tempted to change my putter on slower greens, and as I said earlier to Steve, I've always struggled when greens are really slow," Woods said to reporters.
"I've always experimented with other putters throughout the years, but I've never put one in play until now."
The putter switch was actually first rumored at the Masters, when speculation was abundant that Woods would switch to the Method in his first event of the year. Woods did not make the switch then, clearly still confident rolling it with the Cameron on Augusta National's speedy greens.
Actually, the whispers of the shift began prior to the season - at least within the Nike Golf camp. Reps from the company were hopeful, but not quite expectant, that Woods would make the switch to the Method. Two primary reasons they gave for the switch were the success of Stewart Cink and Lucas Glover in winning '09 majors with the stick before it hit the marketplace, and slo-mo video shown to me of Woods putting with his Cameron and the Method at the Nike Golf facility in Ft. Worth, Texas. The Nike putter was drastically "hotter" than the Cameron, which comes most into play on slow to mid-pace surfaces.
This week at St. Andrews is the perfect opportunity for Woods to experiment with a switch.

On the putter – he has 13 with the Cameron, not 14. The first was with a Ping.
The ball comes off of the Nike putter face faster than it does with the Cameron. He is trying to even up his feel between the slower St Andrews greens and the faster US greens.
Don’t expect this to be a permanent change anytime soon.

It's never the clubs
It’s the person swinging them in ALL cases. I would have to venture to guess that even though I am currently an 7 hdc. that say Tim Clark could beat me hands down giving me shots even if he used hickory shaft clubs and wound golf balls. JMHO
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
never say never
Don’t forget Hilton Head this year. Brian Davis found out that his putter was twisted out of alignment causing him to miss putts left. He got it straightened and started making putts.
The ball comes off the face of this Nike putter faster than his Cameron – he’s used to putting on lightning fast greens and St Andrews’ greens are anything but fast. If this helps him with his speed control – it’s the putter.
Hybrids vs long irons….rock hard surlyn covered balls vs softer core balls with urythane
Shafts too stiff or too flexible….lie angles not well suited to a swing.
Sometimes it is the arrow.

Well, he may be able to switch
putters, but the space between his ears remains the same…and his ears will be tuned into all the remarks the Brits will have for him…..STUB
Open galleries are among the most knowledgeable and reserved in all of golf, so I would expect that if Woods is playing poorly he will be surrounded by mostly silence with a smattering of polite applause.

Normally....
Yes, but the country is full of rage after their performance at the World Cup. All it would take would be a couple of pissed-out-of-their-mind hooligans to shout some nonsense at tiger to remind him of his mess off the course. Speaking of, what are some good ole British golf heckles? Mind the Burn, Mr. Woods!
Semper Ubi Sub Ubi
I must have missed seeing Scotland in the World Cup`
Call a Scot and Englishman and he might yell something like “ya havering bas” right before he takes a swing at you.

They did both times when I hit the 18th in 2 at St Andrews !
Parred it both times and got applause :) About a dozen both times, lol.
I booked it both times a year in advance.
Played the Eden course the day before, it was 200 dollars for both…that was 10 years ago. It’s probably 250 now…
No, you don't understand, Easing. I don't want a piece of the place.
I just wanna play a round of golf.
ummm – aren’t you supposed to hit the 18th in 2 ? :-)
Isn’t that the coolest thing about St Andrews ? You’re sitting right off of a public street with people sitting around – and they actually applaud good tee shots at 1 and approaches and putts at 18.

True court
the first time, I had the wind behind me, I hit a half wedge in to 20 feet…i was nervous as hell. the next time, I had a 30 mph wind in my face…hit a 5 iron to 25 feet…felt great :)
NICE !!
Not many things more fun than hitting a great shot into a really heavy headwind.

You know what it was like..
That fence to the right was just 20 yards away from me…so glad I didn’t push the shot.
