If the Masters Has a Green Jacket, Amateurs Deserve One Also
Last weekend, I went to a party in Washington, DC, that celebrated the end of a charity golf outing in suburban Maryland earlier in the day. I didn't play, but a few of my friends did. (We were going to go out later, so just met there.) One of my friends' co-workers - also named Ryan - was telling me about how he and a buddy have a summertime bet going on golf.
What's the bet? Ryan said that the first of the two guys to break 90 wins a red jacket that they've purchased. And, close to my heart, they've got a blog going about the adventure called The Quest for the Red Jacket. The challenge nearly ended before it started when Ryan shot 90 on the number in April, right around when they started the site. He's yet to break through under 90, but seems like the confidence is growing that he will do it this summer.
I love the concept. Red Jacket Ryan (for purposes of this discussion) is blogging in one of the more pure ways there is: about yourself and your life. Heather Jones does a good job of chronicling her golf successes and woes at Real Women Golf. There are other sites that do the same, I'm sure, that I'm forgetting. But starting a blog to track your game and its progress - and perhaps a friendly wager to accompany it - is a really good way to stay motivated and encouraged about your game.

"deserve" ?
Really ? now you want golf entitlements ? Can you get that mental poison just by visiting DC these days ?
ah yes – Obama thanks you for joining his side.
The Red Jacket will come from a group of people who CHOSE to put their own money to use for their own pleasure and the only “desrving” in the process is the guy who wins the competition.
Time to lose that word “deserve” from the vocabulary.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Court, I think you kinda missed what I was getting at. The headline wasn’t to imply some kind of jacket thing formally, so much as to introduce the concept of the Red Jacket that my friend is doing.

Hmm – then YOU missed what you were getting at – because you used the word “deserve” as “if this group has something – this other group has to have the same thing”. That’s called entitlement. What you guys are doing isn’t anywhere near that.
I’m telling you – that thought happened because you went inside the beltway ! :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
CG, you are hardwired to resent the mere suggestion that someone just might get something that you don’t. Are you mad that I get veterans benefits and you don’t too?

Yes – silly me – how dare I introduce the idea that words have meanings and that mis-using words leads to misunderstanding.
Show me where I was wrong. I started with RB’s opening statement – explained the problem – then went on to explain WHY what he wrote was incorrect. D – I know you prefer the relativistic thinking of the left, but that mindset is killing this country. You just can’t use whatever words you want, then try to define them however you want when you are challenged. Even Slick Willie didn’t get away with “it depends on what the definition of is is.” What a loon.

I can tell you what the definition of Isner is: incredible.
Same, even more so, for Mahut.
Still astounded by that match.
Topped only by the announcers. (Just seeing if Court is online.)

Well, I guess you can go through all that
rig a ma roll, but down here in the USA OF TEXAS weuns got a better way a keepin track of progress or lack thereof….it’s called WHIP OUT, and that’s right after the round is over, all the players WHIPS OUT THEIR WALLETS…the losers pay and the winners get…you can tell how ya did by the amount ya got….easy, don’t even have to write anything down….that’s mainly in case the wife might happen to see how much ya won or lost, and would decide to spend like amount on a shopping spree…..Easy knows about that one…..jist sayin. and a course, Wendy would never do sumthin like that…..STUB
I bet
The Green Blazer would have something to say about this. jes sayin

careful with that stuff – that “whip out” almost got the new sheriff of Rock Ridge shot by the angry mob. :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Ya, but whilst they was a rompin and a stompin,
they didn’t need no stinkin badges….hahaha…jist call me MONGO…..STUB
I'm going to play golf....
Hopefully I’ll shoot under par……I’m sure I deserve it……:)

If you get what you deserve, Em, there will somehow be a bus on the first fairway
under which you’ll somehow be thrown. (Unnecessary J/K)
Have a great round!

Wendy, why the envy?
Don’t tell us you haven’t been out digging up the turf….What is it, weather, or old war injury acting up….STUB
The weather has been great here in the UK for weeks
as you may have noticed at Wimbledon. Wendy might have another reason, but it’s not the weather :)
Perhaps a "War of the Roses" type war.
Totally kidding, Wendy. In fact, it might be yet another one of those comments that don’t translate well over at your place, which is just as well.

Well - there is York vs Lancaster
or Michael vs Kathleen. Then there’s blackspot, greenfly, etc, some wars are never-ending! I haven’t forgiven you, TXQ, for not acknowledging “I beg your pardon” as a good line.
Envy? I merely want to be as good at golf as Em is
that’s all. Still out there playing golf 3 times a week – even needed a buggy one day, it was SO hot. Garden has never looked more glorious; brick-edged gravel circle with standard marguerites & central viburnum great success, thank you. How’re the tomatoes, STUB?
You say tomatoes, he says Bloody Marys.
About six or seven.

I'm guessin' STUB pinches after his sixth or seventh,
followed by a slap or two.
