Romo WDs from Open Qualifier to Begin Blundering Cowboys' Season
Going into Monday's 36 hole qualifier for the US Open at The Woodlands, Texas, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said he would not miss any football-specific time to pursue playing in the Open.
(Never mind that coach Wade Phillips gave him the a-ok to go play at the Nelson. After all, Romo is a great QB up until around Thanksgiving.)
So, when weather delayed the first of two rounds today for Romo, things were not looking good for Romo to finish before "practice" on Tuesday.
(Again, really. Practice? No Iversonian rant needed here, but June workouts for NFL teams aren't even allowed to have real hitting and running. Ask the Baltimore Ravens.)
Miraculously, the weather cleared which allowed Romo to finish round one. He shot 71. Things were looking good as he was only trailing Casey Clendenon, the 18 hole leader, by four strokes.
(At this point, it still seemed like quite a long shot for Romo to make it. The guy can't even hold a football to the ground for a field goal, and have you seen who he's been dating?)
Needing to find a way into the top two players at the end of 36, Romo had some work to do. That work became almost impossible to do when he made a quadruple bogey on the first hole of round two. Weather rolled in for a second time, but Tony had already Romo'd it. He was +7 overall when the alarm sounded. Even if he came back to finish the round, he would have had to come home in some 15 strokes to have any kind of chance. May as well just go to practice.
Had Romo been successful, he would have joined former San Francisco 49ers quarterback John Brodie (1959, '81), former New York Yankees outfielder Sam Byrd (1938-41, 46-47, 1949-51) and former NHL player Bill Ezinicki (1947, '52, '56, '60-61, 63-64, 67-68) as the only pro athletes from other sports to make the US Open field. Not even Jay Don Blake has made the US Open, and that guy killed the celebrity circuit.
It was a good try, but in the end, Romo has to go home to lie in his bed made of $100 bills.
