So Why Does No One Care That Monty Is A Cheater?
The UK tabloids are going to be all over 2010 Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, especially now that he has admitted to engaging in at least one extramarital affair. According to the Mirror rag over the Pond, Monty has been cheating on his wife of just about two years with an old flame. Monty's been cheating with an old neighbor.
Monty even got out in front of the story by admitting that it was true.
"I have put my marriage under considerable strain but we are working through these problems. I am very sorry for the hurt I have caused to the ones I love so much," Monty said in a statement last night.
"I would ask that my family and I are given the space and privacy to continue trying to resolve the issues. I will be making no further comment."
And yet there's no stink. There's barely a blip of it here in the States. Rickie Fowler lighting up Muirfield Village is a much larger story. Even Tiger breaking par today is a bigger deal. Why is there not merciless coverage?
I think I can field this one with a couple of reasons. First, Monty is washed up. He's not really out in front of golf at all, except in a ceremonial capacity. In a lot of ways - at least in this country - that makes Monty no different than any run-of-the-mill athlete in another sport. It's not like he's Shawn Kemp.
And unlike Tiger Woods, there's really only one mistress that Monty has had. In fact, this woman that Monty has cheated with this time was the same woman that may well have killed his first marriage. Almost in the sense that few people seemed particularly bothered about Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles in (very obvious) cahoots, Monty has fallen into the arms of a familiar woman. As far as "movie of the week" storylines go, this is not particularly exciting.
But more than all of that, Monty gets made fun of on such a regular basis because of self-inflicted foot-in-mouth disorder that for this to happen is just another drop in the bucket. Even at his peak, Monty was teased - actually much more so than now. It's almost out of our system at this point. Were Monty not the Ryder Cup captain, would anyone even care?
Part of the cry about this story could be, "Where is the same outrage that people expressed about Tiger?!" Simply, Tiger was only made fun of or criticized in whispers and in certain circles. There had been years of quiet frustration with the world number one and his extramarital affairs popped the cork on that bottle of pent-up anger. Monty has filled barrels of cabernet makefunon.
It's a shame that this happened, but Monty's star has faded such that he will be able to deal with this in relative anonymity.

There could be a few UK movies that go straight to video:
An Affair to Forget
The Fool Monty
Oh Captain, Why Captain?
The Fooler Monty
Who????????????
the tabloids on this side of the pond have never heard of him, that’s why.

That's too direct an answer, Diane.
We prefer indirect. Got any of those?

Haha, I figure Monty won’t get any play in US tabloids, but I meant among golf writers :)
BTW, totally forgot to answer your question about Chestnut Ridge. I’ve played there about a handful of times. Love the course. It’s about 20 minutes from my in-laws!

Wow – this could be a long list of reasons…but we’ll keep it short. Reason #1 why nobody cares that Monty had an affair…BECAUSE HE’S MONTY – How about #2 ? HE’S NOT THE LEAD DOG ON THE EURO TOUR ANYMORE! !!!
Sorry RB – you’re still thinking backwards. The real question is still – why should we care that Tiger had all those affairs ? It’s not our business.

I think that it’s been pretty well established that it matters because once a figure reaches cultural transcendence and their riches are based off of that status, their private lives that become public can become our business. Doesn’t mean that anyone HAS to have an interest in it, but they can.

It matters to a bunch of addle brained morons who have nothing better to do than watch ET or whatever the rest of these garbage gossip shows are called.

While I do feel that shows like ET should go home,
I also want to root for athletes I truly admire and respect.

What's ridiculous
is this false assumption by many that Tiger is / was the only one. That these very wealthy men traveling the world are all saints. Of course many have strong family values and are good men that are 100% faithful to their wives. But you’re extremely naive if you don’t understand there is a sizable number of these players (past and present) that succumb to the many temptations presented to them. It happens. It will continue to happen. With that said, Court is 100% correct, it’s not our business what anybody not related to us does in their private life.

So Monty wanted what was behind door number two.
Thanks for playing the game.
here's another way to look at it...
…Tiger is a physical specimin running around (mostly) with very attractive women…do you really want those same visuals with….Monty ? (lol)

My answer is,
One woman vs 12-18 who knows. Second and most important The media and Tiger himself was sold to the public as a well rounded family man and athlete. Tiger also stood in front of the Cameras on national TV in Florida at a childrens event for the First Tee stating, " Family should always come first above golf and everything else. All the while not living up to what he was preaching to those kids and the people whom were watching. In fact he was doing the opposite.
That is my view, but this topic has been rehashed over and over and I personally don’t care anymore but my opinion of the man in general has gone waaaaay down as it has for many a tiger fan and golf fan.

Also to be fair
I have always liked Monty and his Freddy like smooth swing. A good golfer in his prime. I was honored to have met him several months back and he was a true gentleman giving me 10 minutes or so of his time to talk. I have tried to say hello to Tiger at least 10 times over the years but got the cold shoulder. One thing I will say for Monty, he never pretended to be something he was not. He was always candid with his comments both on and off the course.

Evidently
he pretended to be something to his wife that he wasn’t. If you want to be fair, then also condemn Monty’s actions. Cheating is cheating and both Tiger and Monty are equally wrong in doing so.

You’re probably right about Monty – but wow – the different sides of the guy are just bizarre. He definitely has the “nice guy” side, but when I see that on TV, it always looks like he’s putting on airs. It has always been the rabbit ears side of him that seemed more genuine…like he was better than everybody around him. Always enjoyed watching him play in his prime, but I always found myself laughing at his annual “I’m best suited to win the US Open because I am such a straight driver of the ball” statement.
I guess the truth of the matter is that we really don’t know any of these guys from what we see on TV.

Hey everbody...lets consider this
from an entirely different perspective…..What if this stuff of one man, one woman is wrong? What if way back when, it was like say ELKS of today….The males fought it out, and the winner took the whole harem……Or, there is evidence to suggest that in the amazon forests, there were tribes where one female had intercourse with all the men in the tribe….Maybe we should look at this thing from a Male Whore view and then Now, what TIGAR and Monty and a whole lot of men and women are doing is a legitimate way of living….Now, Ryan even after just marrying one, can go out looking for more….something to think about don’t ya think?…..STUB
don't make me he-bitch-man-slap you
(best line in that movie)
I don’t know, Stub, I’ve seen a number of Elks Clubs around the states and I just don’t see women going for that kind of ratio. :-D
No doubt that you’re correct. We’ve all seen women chasing the one stud in droves. If it wasn’t for the pressure of social convention (oddly enough – usually pushed by women) we just might have what you’re talking about.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Well, I laid awake last evening, mainly due to having ingested
a large amount of my world famous RIBS, and cold brew, but pondered this….There have been several religions over the centuries, that advocated multiple wives…The Mormons, take as many as ya want, just support and service all of them….The stupid Muslims who think if ya blow yourself up you will get 72 virgins….(ya right……first, I don’t think they could find 72 and if they did, their beards would be heavier than mine, and it wasn’t that long ago they could braid the hair under their arms…that’s why they wear those long black things)….Anyone remember reading about the Arabian Nights, and the harems they had? Now, the ratio in the world is 6-7 ladies to each male…..Why is this? Ya don’t suppose someone is trying to tell why us something? And who are we, mere men, to deprive those lovely creatures of the pleasures of life? There are not one among us males who have not looked at a lady and had the thought of “damm, I’d like to bang her”….I contend that if you say no, your a lier….Even Pres..Carter said he had sinned in his heart….why can’t Tigerhead, Chicago, F&G, even Jumpin, go out and enjoy themselves? None of our business right? This one to one thing has really been pushed by women…The rational is that they don’t have to share the income from the male with other ladies….To this I say, balderdash…give them their teeth and shoes, push them out the door to make their own incomes…not stay home drinking gin and eating Bon Bons….STUB
Stubbo hehehe
Beleive me I do enjoy myself, just not in the way that you mentioned. I have the same g/f of 8 years now and am very happy as is she. I would never think of venturing off. I must admit though that there are some nice lookers around on tour :o) but I behave and I’m not even married. Shame shame shame on Tiger and Monty and anyone else that is married that screws around on the wife and then goes out and preaches, “Family First” The tournament is under way finaly about an hour ago. I gotta scoot.
