Kaymer Dons German Jersey for 18th Hole, Avoids Fine
As any of the European players that were over here in the States for the last couple of weeks could tell you, they collectively were probably more interested in the World Cup results pouring in from South Africa than the US Open. (No, really. Since most of them had no chance with the Jacklin Curse.)
Back on European soil, German Martin Kaymer paid close attention to the results of the Aleman-England match on Sunday morning. After the Germans thrashed the English by a count of 4-1, marking England's worst World Cup loss ever, Kaymer was naturally excited. He played the final hole of the BMW International Open - played in Germany - wearing the German jersey.
Typically, and especially not in Germany, Kaymer would have been fined. Of course, he wasn't in his homeland.
"In the spirit of the day it's no problem," said tournament director Mike Stewart, "but I've reminded him he shouldn't be wearing football shirts."
England got the last laugh, though. Countryman David Horsey won the tournament to pick up his first European Tour title.
