Cristie Kerr Wins by a Dozen, Becomes Third #1 in Three Weeks

Since Lorena Ochoa's surprise retirement in April, the LPGA Tour has been in a bit of disarray at the top.  Jiyai Shin assumed the top spot in the world upon Ochoa's disappearance.  That run lasted until last weekend in Atlantic City when Ai Miyazato became the number one player by notching her fourth win of the season at the Shop Rite Classic.  Her time at the top, though, is very short lived.

By virtue of winning the LPGA Championship on Sunday by a dominating dozen shots, Cristie Kerr is expected to be the new number one player in the world of women's golf.  She will become the first American to hold the title since the rankings were created in 2006.  And she is arguably the first American to be considered number one - officially or otherwise - since 1999, when Juli Inkster lost the money list title to Karrie Webb by a couple hundred thousand dollars.

Ai Miyazato could have maintained the number one ranking were she able to finish solo second.  Unable to do so, she will still be close to the top spot in the rankings.  The Japanese standout has been the best player on the LPGA Tour in 2010.

Kerr, though, has been the best American player since the rankings started.  She is the only American to win multiple majors in the last three and a half seasons, comprising 14 majors.  As the AP notes, Kerr also has half of the six American wins in the last 34 LPGA Tour events.  She is the only American to win on the LPGA Tour this season.

With so much chaos at the top, it is very well possible that a fourth player - Suzann Pettersen or Yani Tseng - could hold that premier distinction later this season.

Which one is it ? Do you need the lesson or the putter ? She’s giving a lot of credit to her new putter. :-)

She's always been a good putter.....

but, if a new club gives her more confidence….then watch out, she’s gonna be tough.

Is it possible for xxx Golf Channel people to be more insipid sounding ? This is horrible. Does she get some sort of royalty status with the win ? I thought it was just a big check, a trophy, and a higher ranking that gets her an extra helping of pride.

gee - ya think ?

I’m not big on watching without the sound of the ball strike, the crowd sounds, and the occassional player-caddy conversation.

Miyazato was almost mad enough to get into second by herself. I guess getting dressed in the dark, then seeing what she put on almost did the job. :-D

I saw that T-19 finish – then looked to see that she only shot a 1-under 71. How ridiculous – to be able to move up nearly 20 spots on that course with a 1-under.

Are Americans so insecure?

Great fan of Kerr, Shin & Miyazato (& Sorenstam, Ocho in their time) but it never stikes me about nationality until I read blogs like this? Just enjoy.

oh please – don’t try to tell us that England / the UK isn’t nationalistic !! schools and businesses shutting down for a soccer match…golfers going into the tank when his country loses that game….Henman Hill…dreams and plans for world domination…be serious.

World of difference between national team/playing as an individual, surely, CG?

When Ryder Cup is played, I’m as nationalistic as the next person; for every other golf tournament I support the people I like as players, not by nationality.

“Schools/businesses shut down for a soccer match” – where did you get that from – 1966 archives?!) Sure I would have loved to have seen Henman win Wimbledon, but not in the fanatical way you describe, and it would in no way detract from my joy at watching Federer.

The insecurity Wendy suspects about some Americans

might come from the fact they don’t dominate sports as much as they used to when they more opportunity to excell than many countries did in the past. Much of the world now has those opportunities and one sees it today in golf. The confidence can take a big knock when there was once a time when American golfers won just about everything.

Well, they certainly didn't win you over, did they, Easing? (J/K)

Seriously, Eas, you’ve been making a lot of fine points these days, which I attribute to a lot of fine pints, no?

Maybe, but...

…“Chariots of Fire” is still one of the best movies ever ! :-)

I was teasing RB on that one, Wendy.

Umm – it was reported that schools and a lot of businesses (not pubs, of course) were shutting down for both the England v US and Germany matches, but mostly the US match.

Henman Hill isn’t a court – it’s a big hill with a big screen on the back of Center Court…err….Centre Court. It was named so because of Henman’s popularity as an English player – never a champion – just where he was born. Not Borg Hill or Federer Hill. That’s nationalism.

Now I know you're making it up, CG

England vs USA was 7.30p.m. kick-off, England vs Germany was Sunday afternoon.

Henman was born on Henman Hill? – wow – I didn’t know that ;o)

Agreed on “Chariots of Fire”. Perhaps they’ll make a film of TW winning US Open on a broken leg? Suggested titles?

by WendyUK on Jun 30, 2010 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions

That must’ve been confusion on our media’s part. They were making a big deal out of it. The game was on at 2:30 eastern time over here. Guess they forgot about the time difference. Me too.

My best friend at the time and I saw Chariots of Fire a dozen times in the theater…used to come out in slow motion. :-) Hmm – if they do make the TW movie – let’s hope they wait 60 years like they did for Chariots of Fire so we don’t hae to watch it.

Well too many pints and I wouldn't even type hello..

There is an ale I’m enjoying a lot at the moment, but I best not get carried away.
