Phil Mickelson's Open Friday is Similar to His Masters Sunday

As I'm sure that you've realized by this point in the proceedings today, Phil Mickelson has made his move into contention to win his first US Open.  Going out in 31 on the front - and susceptible - nine, Mickelson then birdied the 11th hole to get into a tie for second place.  He is two strokes behind clubhouse leader Graeme McDowell.

Mickelson made three consecutive birdies on two, three, and four.  He went red on six and eight before a bogey at nine.  That nine hole stretch resembles the nine holes that Mickelson turned in to close out the Masters, which gave him his third green jacket.

That Sunday, Mickelson came home in four birdies against no bogeys.  On today's opening nine, it appeared that Mickelson had the same kind of ball striking and putting.  It wasn't that Mickelson was perfect, but that he was in complete control.

Yesterday, Mickelson said that he was having trouble off of the tee.  The tee shot at 17 gave that away.  But the result on the front nine today was that Mickelson put himself in position to make birdies.  With how aggressive Mickelson is and his awareness of this course, he is certain to make more birdies.

Maybe he can find the elusive eagle.

Must’ve had a fast cart girl keeping you well watered today. This morning, you were kid negative. This evening, you’re pinning your Sunday hopes on a Friday round from one of the most fickle great talents in the game. Mickelson had the same kinds of birdie runs on Thursday and Saturday at the Masters – he just bobbed up and down with a bunch of bogies, too.

OH MY LORD ! Phil just backed off the driver at 14 ! Someone check for alien pods in his car or bedroom !!

How about Els’ 5 birdies ? How about Matt Bettencourt with birdies at 8, 9, and 10 ?

This is going to be a fun weekend !

Hate to stick my neck out like this but...

I don’t see anybody beating Phil this week, what a round he’s got going! It would be great to see him finally get a well deserved US Open.

Yeah and yesterday

the Knuckle Heads at The Golf Channel were writing Phil off just one shot back of tiger and they gave Tiger all the " O’h he can still win accolades on the planet" what a bunch of chuckleheads..And tiger had the excuse yesterday about the greens in the afternoon for putting being bad LMAO Last I checked yesterday, Casey, 22 puts,, deJonge 23 putts and today Phil is knocking them in from everywhere in the afternoon as are others.

Go PHIL YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH BABY !!!

Hey Jumpn

For somebody who claims not to be a fan of any particular player, you sound very suspiciously like a Phil fan. It’s ok you can admit it…lol Hey, I’m a Phil fan too, you see it’s not so hard.

Ahhhh Tigerhead ( tapping on my laptop screen )

I’m pulling for Phil this week and I made that known as he has a lot to gain this week. First US OPEN win, Chance to take over as #1 in the world, Opportunity for the Grande Slam this year with a win this week. If it was my good friend Lumpy Herron in the same situation I’d be pullinf for him just the same. AND, I LOVE to throw a DIG at the chuckle , knuckle heads at TGC any chance I get. “GOLFS HOME” my ass. They are just a marketing company owned by comcast, in sheeps clothing and could care less about golf. Waggleroom and other sites are far better. I’ll be happy when the new Golf TV Channel starts up. Be sure to tune into “Back Peddle Central” tonight on TGC LOLOLOL Ok, it’s been a looooong day here at Pebble and I started drinking early, but I meant every word I said.

Grande Slam ?

been making a few trips to Starbucks this week ? :-) I like it.

tell me a TV company that isn’t a marketing company ? They are businesses – it’s what they do.

Court I love adding the "E" at the end of Grand

It’s just a thing that I always do.

definitely adds a bit of “ponce” to it. :-D And hey – he IS the only guy on the planet who can win the Grand Slam this year. Of course, it’s not the US Open that has been his biggest problem – it’s the British

It's a hell of a start court

And to win at the US OPEN after winning the Masters, coupled with taking over as the Worlds #1 would certainly help Phil over the Pond.

it’s premature is what it is. let the guy win the US and have a lead at St Andrews before talking Grand(e) Slam…unless you’re going to Denny’s for breakfast.

To much Cholesteral

for me in those places court. If that was tiger shooting that 5 under today and he had won the masters this year already, TGC would already be handing the Grande Slam to him and the endless groveling would be over the top. ( just like the syrup over pancakes at IHOP. hehehehe The over sensationalizm makes me crazy

Just yanking your chain jumpn

but also making the point, it’s fun to pull for somebody. Makes it more interesting to watch, just like in a football game or whatever, don’t you think?

It is Tigerhead

But you know how I feel about the lack of a TV time other players get on a station that promotes itself as “Golf Home” If not for ALL of the players we wouldn’t have a tour at all. The golf channel needs to pay more attention." Eggs in one basket" is never a good business choice in any business including mine. The sport we all love needs more promoting as a whole and not the promotion of a certain few. If I limited my business to a certain few, I’d be out of business.

TGC is about making money

but I can’t stand most of the writers. Anyway, I visited the website tonight for the first time in a very long time, even left a comment. Mostly what I saw was negative stories about Tiger, so not sure I’d agree they’re promoting him since the “accident”. They ride Phil’s coat tail over there also, so it’s clearly not just Tiger.

Not the case over there yesterday Tigerhead

As Jay Coffin wrote and titled his article. Phil De-Railment. AS you know TGC has been over-hyping Tiger for years and ignoring or putting down most others. Last night on Golf Central it was all Tiger.

it IS annoying...

…when there are so many good stories and all these weak writers and broadcasters can talk about is Tiger or Phil.

by the way – Hugo Leon made the cut…presumably with a caddy.

I agree

TGC sucks, and sucks bad, no argument. But for the last 12 or 13 years pretty much one guy (Tiger) has owned the sport. A channel devoted to golf is going to cover that guy a lot, no way around it.

Agreed

but unlike MW Tiger is one of the best players in history, I think that warrants some air time. Pretty sure if TGC was around in Jack’s prime, he would have got some coverage as well.

How would you feel if you loved say, the Redsox, and 70 % of the time all they showed on TV was the Yankees ? Would piss you off wouldn’t it ? lol

ummm – 70% of the time they DO show the Spankees…but usually it’s a weekend series with the BoSox. Just how do they do that ? How do they get away with scheduling Boston and New York EVERY FREAKIN’ WEEKEND !!!!!!!!!!!

Not sure what your point is there

but I suppose it would. However if the Yankees were winning the World Series every year, I’m guessing I’d understand why.

Rest assured

If that was tiger that shot a 5 under today, TGC would have hired a brass band to march down every Main St. USA tooting that horn. This type of thing went on in the Boxing World with ALI ( although limited ) at times. Larry Holmes and others deserved better and didn’t get the respect they deserved either.

Thanks for that TXQ

I’m still involved in the boxing world some and I have know larry for many years, we are still friends today. I always felt he was a much better fighter than Ali and deserved better TV time and promotion along with others.

Holmes was fantastic! Against Norton, Cooney, whomever.

But he never shoulda fought Tyson at his age. Nobody should’ve, for about 8 years.

by TXQ on Jun 18, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

he was an all-timer – he just didn’t have two other all-timers like Frazer and Foreman to make an era like Ali had.

same thing happened in tennis with Conners, McEnroe, and Borg. Guys like Sampras were downplayed because he didn’t have a real adversary his entire career. Aga-weenie had to go cry in his corner for a couple of years before stepping up.

they were finishing when Sampras was on the rise. Becker and Edberg were the end of the McEnroe / Lendl era. That was another terrific set of years – but Lendl pretty much ended the era of great players playing singles and doubles.

Well, let's see what he does going forward

as we all know Phil getting hot early doesn’t bode well for the next few days in US Open’s.

It is almost like it would have been better to have that GREAT round
