2010 US Open Round Two Open Thread

Everyone, play nice in this thread while I'm out on the course.  Some things to look for today:

  • Will the 7th play under 100 yards?  (It surely will one day.)
  • Will the 18th have the tees up again to encourage some hutzspah in the wind?
  • 17 was the hardest hole on the course yesterday - will the pin dictate that again?
  • Score of the day?  I think there may be a 68 out there in the morning, though yesterday was bizarre in that the morning group had the toughest go.
  • Can the US complete the World Cup comeback?  Ok, just wanted to see if you were still reading.
  • Will Tiger continue to blame poa annua greens for his inability to make anything outside of four feet?
  • Can Phil get his act together in the afternoon?
  • Will any amateur be within three shots of the lead going into the weekend?

Might have to ask Russell Henley (cue the UGA fight song) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdgxC4f0SK4) about the low amateur – since he’s the low am after round 1, AND was ranked as the top collegiate player. :-D

Well – the ESPN geniuses got off to a sparkling start during the update following the World Cup game.

Talking about Brendon de Jonge (and mispronouncing his name yet again) and his then two shot lead…“I believe that will change between now and Sunday.”

Holy Cow – this guy has a job talking sports – shouldn’t he be working on theoretical physics or at least fixing that oil leak in the gulf ?

hole at 17

Hmm – I thought they rotated the hole position left and right Thursday and Friday. Jerry Kelly doesn’t seem to have a problem with where it is today.

who designed that 5th tee box ?

A wall and fence in front of the tee on the 5th hole ? Might as well put a clown mouth on the fence post.

ESPN shouldn't just flash the first 2 pages of the leaderboard at this point

on this course. They should show 4 or 5 pages, and often. Things are too unpredictable.

Dang

Tiger is at 5 over. I now he hasn’t played well lately, but I didn’t expect him to play this badly at Pebble.

Except for his tee shot at the third – he really isn’t playing bad golf – the putts just aren’t falling. He’s a little laid off at the top, but not missing by a whole lot.

Looks like they might get some fog out there today.

The few putts I've seen are not falling because

they are not in the same area code as the hole. I’ve seen 3 or 4 that weren’t within 8-12 inches of the hole. He’s not putting well at all.

whew – you’re right

he’s not hitting his irons very well – he’s hitting greens, but not very close to the hole

Reminds me of last years PGA

Tigers putting saved his skin many a time…last year it dried up…is this becoming the norm for him ?

by Easingwold on Jun 18, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Couldn't agree more

I’ll always remember that putt he holed to force a playoff against Bob May…the chip in at the 16th at Augusta…when those miss..he loses…he’s almost as bad a driver as Seve was…hole those putts of lose easily.

by Easingwold on Jun 18, 2010 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Easing, I think you could indeed "agree more"

if you really put your mind to it.

(After all, it’s not doing much else, is it? J/K)

by TXQ on Jun 18, 2010 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Funny

but I’m pretty sure putting is important to every player’s ability to win. And I would love to see the player who could win 70 something times and 14 majors without making his share of putts. Anyway, yea TW is not playing all that well; hitting a few loose shots, not putting well, overall not very sharp. With that said I’d hardly call 74, 72 a train wreck, nor do I see the need to start his funeral procession. I’d love for someone to name me a player who doesn’t or hasn’t had stretches of poor play in his career? I do agree Tiger is clearly not the player he was 10 years ago, but I’m with court, counting him out has proven to be very unwise over the years.

Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth.

Careful guys

There have been 5 or 6 times in his career when things looked like they were drying up – only to see him come firing back the next year with a big string of wins. He’s only 34 – those traditional peak years for a golfer.

I know what it looks like, but this is one guy you can’t count out.

I'm guessing that would only happen if he gets back with Elin and his

kids, and i don’t see that happening.

I predict (and better write this down, Court, in ink) he’ll win only one more major (PGA) a few years down the road and a handful of lesser tourneys.

Then he’ll start caddying for Hall of Famer Michelle Wie.

by TXQ on Jun 18, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Huh ?

You think that if he and Elin split – he’ll never play well again ? And you’re not inviting everybody over to drink whatever it is you’re drinking ? :-)

LMAO !! Caddying for Michelle Wie

I'm drinking Kool-Aid mixed with extra-strength

Kool-Aid. But I do think he’s screwed up his life royally, and realizes his personal life is waaaay more important than golf.

I don’t like how the coverage goes from ESPN to NBC back to ESPN in one day.

are always pleasing to read. It’s a trade-off.

I agree with Court about Pepper, but I’ve always liked Miller. I guess Miller will always be liked or loathed.

Close to a hole in one at 17, then hits it to a foot at 7. (angling for a Wednesday invite to Augusta National for the par three contest ?) :-D

Holy Smokes -

Mickelson has 3 straight birdies !

How about Andrew Putnam hitting a shot from the beach ? Pretty cool.

Can’t stand Berman doing golf – but when he says something good – gotta give him credit. He said that they don’t like to pull for one player or team over another, but they’re going to do all they can to keep anyone from finishing the round at -4 or lower….because if the lead stays at -3, Tom Watson plays the weekend. :-D

Someone toss Berman off of Mount Everest

Good lord – “the cliffs of doom”…“Cannery Row” – the man is nothing short of stomach turningly obnoxoious.

Apparently he thinks that hitting a shot from the end of the 8th fairway is like hitting off of Mount Everest.

The man just wears me out…ALMOST to the point of liking Johnny Miller…but not quite.

Oh great – now Mickelson’s divot is on its way to Maui.

Poultz made a long birdie putt, so Berman said, “Well that’ll buy him some more plaid!”

Not bad, for an unfunny guy.

Berman has mentioned Poulter's triple-bogey 8n as a snowman

a few times. Is that cuz of the silhouette of the 8 and the snowman, or can a 9 or 10 be a snowman too.

If this is a naive question, Ryan or Court, take it easy on me.

by TXQ on Jun 18, 2010 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

just the 8 for the silhouette (then again, I’ve never seen you make a snowman in the winter) :-)

Surprised Phil didn't have his caddy tend the pin for his

50-foot putt on 15.

Equally surprised at Stenson’s checked pants, though they’re not as Loudmouthy as Daly’s.

Just one more time....

…I DESPISE having Chris Berman calling golf – especially at a major.

He sounds like a mental case with his “cliffs of doom” type lines – and the longer the day goes on, the more he tries to sound like Ted Knight.

What’s worse is that Scott Van Pelt has started repeating his moronic lines.

by courtgolf on Jun 18, 2010 9:39 PM EDT reply actions

Ignore above. My Mac went haywire.

Berman did have one other clever/funny line. i think it was Yang on 17 having all sorts of trouble getting on the green. He tried the wedge, then a nine, then the putter and it kept rolling back off the green, at which point Berman said, “What’s he gonna try next, the umbrella?”

Not bad, Chris.

by TXQ on Jun 18, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

It goes from bad to worse....

…after listening to Berman babble – they finish the show with Rick Reilly – possibly THE biggest golf media ego on the planet – and that’s saying something when you consider what I think of Johnny Miller.

He’s as sickening as Berman
