When Greens Are Fairways and Tees Are Drop Zones
Pebble Beach is definitely holding its own today despite very favorable weather conditions. The course is firm and fast, making shotmaking tough. Or even putting. Ask Aaron Baddeley, who four-putted on 17. But more bizarre could be what happened to Jon Curran.
On the third hole, Curran hit his tee shot onto the 16th green. Paddy Harrington was getting ready to chip onto the 16th green when the ball landed about four feet from the pin he was trying to get near.
PGA Tour official Mike Shea determined that since Curran was on the wrong putting green, he had TIO (Temporary Immovable Obstruction) intervention on his line of play towards the third hole. It took some time for the official to pace off the spot in which he could drop for relief without being closer to the hole.
Then, Harrington played his chip and - naturally fazed - flubbed it.
Just a little while ago, the unthinkable happened. Ryan Moore hit his tee shot so poorly (or well, since he crushed it) on the 17th hole that it skidded across the 18th tee box adjacent to it, and nearly into the ocean. It went under the small fence that Jack Nicklaus sat on as he played the 2000 US Open at Pebble in one of his many farewell tours.
The ocean and the fence, believe it or not, is considered a red stake hazard.
Moore, though, actually got free relief because of hix promixity to the sign post at 18. He pitched his next shot into the front bunker. Then he exploded onto the 17th green to twelve feet. He made the putt for an incredible bogey.
[H/T to the crew on Twitter, including Rob Bolton, for clearing up the Moore situation.]

Didn’t get the Moore story correct. There IS a red stake at the fence. Moore got line of sight relief from the sign post – dropped inside the hazard line (the thick grass between the tee box and the cliff) – he pitched onto and through the green (second shot) and into the bunker – pitched out and made the bogey putt. (geez – I posted this half an hour ago !) :-D
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Leave it to an official to hold up another player’s shot – a player playing the correct hole – to figure out where the intruding player’s ball should be played. Ridiculous.
I’d like to know what he was thinking – I don’t think TIO is the correct rule. You ARE supposed to move your ball off the green unless you’re playing a shot on that green – but TIO isn’t the rule that covers it.

Even more important, how many words can Ryan type
per minute? Or does he have a staff out there?
If he’s solo, he types faster than Kramer did in that Seinfeld/Candice Bergen episode.
Sorry, made the post, left the media center, then realized what I said couldn’t have been right. Tried to piece it together from Rob’s post and some guys in the center. Anyway, sorry for the confusion – free drop from sign post.
Funny story: ran into Steph Wei leaving the media center, who just happened to be in the grandstand for that hole. She wasn’t sure about the ruling, and that’s when it dawned on me that I made a mistake in the post.

ooooooooooo la la
Not to be confused with Michelle Wie. Not even close. Steph is smokin hot. :o)

And they'll both likely to end up with the same total of
majors.
Just kidding/catering to anti-Wie folk. I actually think she’ll win a handful.
agreed ! personally, I don’t think Wie will ever cross over into the “hot” catagory. She’s cute – but not hot. Besides, she’s developing that Chris Evert laser beam “bitch stare” that just takes all the attractiveness away.

Who! Who! Whoa! I'm a huge Steph Wei fan but
Wie is also a beauty. Ya gotta be blind to not see that. And the balance she has around water hazards is impeccable.
Excellent Action so far,
Unfortunatley, I’m stuck inside for the next two hours, just me and my faithfull assistant Marcie and our 11 laptops. hehehe

Ok – you get bonus points for running into Steph – but being 30 minutes tardy with the post and not checking mine…kinda iffy, pahds. :-D
