Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

And Now We're Finally Live...Plus The First Round of the US Open

Waggle Room has finally made it to Pebble Beach Golf Links and the US Open!  And that's an accomplishment.  Brief story on why.  Last night, I was to have a two segment flight to Monterey.  The first leg was Baltimore to Phoenix.  But because of some satellites that tell planes where to go being blocked in Virginia somewhere, we were doomed.  Delayed for two hours (and just starting to get cookies because of the FAA rules), we took off for PHX.  Of course, the layover in PHX would have been one hour to get to Monterey.  We missed the flight.

Once we landed in PHX, US Airways delightfully told us that we would be rebooked for a morning flight...to San Jose.  Huh?  We found out that they were an hour apart, but our gracious presenting sponsor this week - Lexus - had us covered.  We got in this morning, booked it to the Inn at Spanish Bay, and got over here to the course.

First thing I see upon walking in (other than an incredible view of the Monterey Bay, whatever) was a crowd of people in the fairway six deep to see Tiger play his first hole of the day.  The crowd was subdued, but Woods approach swing looked pretty pure.

Now acquainted with the course a little, I can start doing some real reporting.

Let's get this thing started!

I offer you my most sincere apologies if my apparently clumsy attempt to tease you offended you instead. I wouldn’t deliberately do that for the world.

maybe for the world CUP, however…. :-)

but no – I have never intended to offend anyone on this website.

just teasing you, Wendy

'Scuse me 49er16

you can be “more happy” or simply “happpier” otherwise you’re both greedy and grammatically incorrect. Court is obviously otherwise engaged, otherwise he would have surely pointed this out. ;o)

Ahh. And all I had to do was use "The Google".

Joe sure was great. Got tons of yards with short passes and threw to Rice any old time.

My all-time fave QB is Roger the Dodger Staubach. He did it all.

I’ve seen other people correct me on my grammar before. It really wasn’t my best subject in school. I was more of a Math & Science student.

Just saw the tying goal – REALLY enjoying the English commentator – too bad he can’t tell the American commentator to put a sock in it. (if he describes another play as a “surgical strike”, I’m going to throw up)

OH NO !!!!!! USA just got a goal to go in the lead stolen by the ref.

Yea - Michael Bradley scores the equaliser!!!

About to post that (partly to annoy TXQ) when the bloody phone went and I missed the next bit of action. Two minutes to go.

No wonder you like the English commentator – he sounds totally on the US side.

by WendyUK on Jun 18, 2010 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

It was a good game – but that referee should be pulled from the rest of the Cup. That go ahead goal was good – and they missed three guys getting held on the same play. Amazingly bad – and not just in this game.

oh – I don’t care who he’s pulling for, if anyone – it’s just the way he describes things – SO much better than the cliche book American.

I missed that bit of the action sadly

but back here in the UK booth, Gary Lineker & panel agreed USA should have won.

by WendyUK on Jun 18, 2010 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Correcting people in conversation is geeky and rude.

Correcting people on their hurriedly written e-comments is uber-geeky and rude. Plus you’re telling lots of people, not just the individual.

Correcting’s okay when relevant, but not for the minor obvious typos or syntax mistakes.

Is there a Berman Effect ?

We all agree – Berman has no place calling golf – especially a US Open – ESPECIALLY at Pebble Beach. He has nothing to add to the broadcast. Nearly everything he says is a cliche, or something written down.

Listening to Gary koch and Roger Maltby, two guys who usually do a pretty decent job behind the mic – these guys can’t seem to get anything right. Neither has read a putt right…except to say that they move toward the ocean and they are quick. (wow – stimped at 13 – what else would they be ?)

Is working with Chris Berman somehow lowering their golf IQ’s ?

"this ball will fit in that fairway"

oh – either Rog or Koch made the comment that there was fog rolling in…during a shot from the blimp…showing a CLOUD !!!!!! Geez guys – learn the difference.

Thank you!

Just got home from work and turned on the Open – and the first voice I hear is Chris Berman?! I like Berman, but absolutely not in this venue.

PS…and I see what you mean about Erik Compton – I’m a fan and totally rooting for him, but there’s no need for overkill.

Where is Mike Tirico?

Enough with Eric Compton !!

My god – you’d think they were wheeling the guy between shots on a gurney with IV’s in his arms and machines connected. Tell the story once – and DEFINITELY don’t let Tom Rinaldi do one of these sickening emo pieces.

Compton’s story is a great one – but it isn’t new. I can understand telling it….once…just once. These clowns are telling it every friggin’ time he gets a shot on TV.

Ok - how does...

…the fact that people walking on the beach below the 10th green don’t care whether you make a putt or not put ANYthing into “perspective” ??? (yes – another Chris Berman-ism) Do those people think that because the people on the green don’t care that they are walking on the beach put THEiR lives in perspective ?

UNBELIEVABLE !!

ESPN runs a trailer for the green at 14 – toughest approach and green on the course…show Tiger’s tee shot – flip up to Brendon DeJonge hitting his 3rd into 14….EAGLE !!!!!!!!! (don’t show that shot to Goydos, Furyk, or Duval – the guys in the trailer)

painful triple bogey from John Rollins at 17

long off the tee – tries a flop shot and shanks it – third shot pitches short of the green – chip on but way past – missed putt for double – tap in for triple.

came to 17 tied for the lead at -2….left at +1. ouch.

painful 18th for Jordan Hoffman

semi-tough 2nd shot on 18 behind one of the cypress trees in the fairway – hits the tree and ricochete’s into the bay – drops three – hits four…pulling it left into the bay – drops 5 – hits 6 over the green into the front bunker – 7 doesn’t get out – 8 gets out and finishes about 15 feet from the hole – staring double digits in the face, he calmly rolled in the putt for a 9….followed by a huge roar and applause…a big smile…raised arms…and a very deep breath.

That’s class and poise.

The quad dropped him from T-12 to T-75.

let’s see – there are three main booths, which makes no sense to me – especially the one with Berman – I think there are 5 on course reporters – 3 are former players and 2 are pretty much useless media types – and two doing really bad “emo” side story pieces. That’s the ESPN crew. NBC used a lot of crossover people on the fairways, but only had the one main booth with Miller and Hicks.

Have they commented at all, or shown anyone falling victim to the mowed areas they talked about balls running through? (I remember seeing pictures on here earlier this year)

It’s looking to me that putting has been a big factor in some of these scores.

commented, yes. but they haven’t shown anybody’s ball running off the cliffs. If it’s happened, it was to someone they weren’t watching.

short game is huge at Pebble. These are some tiny greens that are really firm and very fast. Putting, especially late in the day, is huge.
