McIlroy: No Rush to Win A Major Championship
In his pre-US Open press conference, Rory McIlroy was asked whether or not he feels that he is advanced enough in his career and game to win a major championship. His response was both refreshing and kind of surprising.
"[M]aybe in a couple of years I'll hopefully be a bit more advanced in my career to say, yeah, I think it's time that I'm ready to win a Major. But there's no rush right now. I'm just looking to win my next PGA tournament or European Tour event , but it would be great to get a good run this week and at least put myself into contention. I finished third at the PGA last year and I got a good feel about what it's about and hopefully I can do that again this week."
Equally interesting was his first answer at being asked about playing partner Tom Watson's chances this week.
"He should have -- well, he had a great chance to win at Turnberry."

Yep – a terrific answer…let’s hope Dan Marino doesn’t give him a phone call. Sounds like the Tom Watson question shook him up a little bit.
Rory – you win everything as soon as the opportunity presents itself because you never know when or if you’ll get another chance.
Frankly – it’s a stupid question presented by someone who doesn’t understand sports.

I don’t think Rory said that he wouldn’t try to win. I think he said he wasn’t going to put too much pressure on himself just yet.
I guarantee you that if he tees off a few strokes back on Sunday he won’t be playing just to secure a top 5 until it’s clear to him that he can’t win that day.
That’s what Dan Marino said after he lost the Superbowl in his second year…he never got back again.
Of course Rory will be playing as hard as he can this week – but if you come out of something like this and don’t have the attitude of “I’ll be back – you can count on it”, you may never get another shot.

What he says
or thinks or does – may not be the same thing. Saves getting beaten up for sounding too cocky?
Very true – but it also rings back to the pre-Tiger days when guys would win when the stars aligned just right and their games clicked. Nobody can guarantee a win on any particular week – I just don’t mind hearing someone say that they are going to play their best and make everybody else beat them – and if they do, good on them.

Since I’m still new to Waggle Room, do you put up open threads for the Majors?
