Inside the Ropes at the Futures Tour's Teva Championship

I had the pleasure of participating in this week's Duramed Futures Tour event - the Teva Championship - as a walking scorekeeper.  Over the course of the pro-am on Thursday and the three days of tournament play I got to see some pretty decent golf.

My pro-am partner was Angela Buzminski, a Canadian lefty who is about 260 off the tee.  She was talkative, funny and good to have as the pro.  We finished 7-under.   Despite leaving many approach shots within birdie range, collectively our flat sticks were cold.  The winning team was the girl's golf team from a local high school who finished at -16.  They beat a team that included Anthony Munoz, a long-time pro football player.

The highlight for me was that we ended up using several of my shots -- women amateurs were allowed to hit from the forward tees.  When there was a 60-yard or more difference between where the pro and I hit, I generally had an advantage.

In another thread, I wrote about the slow play team I had Friday.  As a side note, one of my golfing gal pals hosted a player who, over dinner one night, said the three in that group are notoriously slow players.

Heavy rain was the story at the start on Saturday.  I was on the first tee at 8:30 with Haley Gildea, Baltimore native Angela Oh, and 2008 US Curtis Cup team member Jennie Lee in a driving rain.  Even though I stood close to directly behind each tee shot I couldn't see any as a result of the poor visibility.  Everyone parred the first and second.  We got as far as second shots to number three before play was suspended for over four hours due to unplayable conditions.  When play resumed the course still had considerable standing water (my shoes are still wet) and the greens were inconsistent.  Even though Oh started the week as number two on the money list she didn't play up to that expectation this week, missing the cut.

The weather Sunday was virtually perfect.  Mostly cloudy gave way to sunshine, with the occasional light breeze to keep the heat and humidity from making the day unbearable.  My group - Big Break winner Briana Vega, 2008 US Curtis Cup team member Jenny Suh, and rookie Dori Carter from Valdosta, GA - each had a decent round.  As a group they hit so many fairways I was surprised by the periodic miss.  The most exciting hole of the day was the par-5 ninth where Jenny chipped in for eagle and Dori, whose attempt to go for it in two landed in the pond fronting the green, made a downhill slider to save par.

From my perspective, it was a great four days.  I reacquainted myself with players I've spent similar time with in previous years and met new that I'll check the leaderboard every week to see how each is doing.  The sad part is I'll have to wait another year for the FUTURES Tour to come back to town.

Good Show!

The on-site report is tip-top – being inside the ropes of the pro-am is even better.

Thanks for the detailed coverage of what turned out to be a full gamut of nasty and good weather, missed and made putts and a highly memorable experience..

Don't worry, nothing will be allright.

Sounds like you had a great time…weather and all. Great pro-am partner. I got to meat Buz here in Atlanta a year and a half ago. She was giving Vicki Hurst a run for her money. Everybody had her pegged for the LPGA before long.

Bet you had a hankerin’ for some good Georgia barbecue after hanging out with Dori Carter. :-)

Buz was an LPGA rookie in 2002. She’s getting her game back after injury and currently has Priority Status 17 on the LPGA.

One thing I neglected to mention about the Pro-Am winning team is their pro was former Waggle Room contributor, Tiffany Joh.

I didn’t know that about Buz’s injury. Hope she can recover all the way. She was looking really strong at the end of ’08.

Did you get to talk with T-Joh ?

I remember now, We went there

with a friend before a football game…I guess it was sort of a tradition…..What it was, was a Hot Dawg, on a slightly larger bun, with chopped fresh onions, than drowned in a can of WOLF BRAND CHILI…Gawd amighty, couldn’t even get a cold beer….had to settle for something Orange and Fizzy….I do know the people around us at the game, were not delighted with the gas attack starting about the second quarter….All nice silent and sneaky…..STUB

That sounds like so much fun...

…and a perfect way to enjoy a golf tournament and get an inside view.

Sounds like you had a blast, Di!

I’d be interested to hear your insights on Vega. I’ve been trying to keep up with how some of the Big Break winners have been doing, and she just seems to have vanished. Since you walked with her, could you tell what’s been holding her back? She looked pretty unstoppable when she won BB.

Bri hasn’t vanished, she’s played seven of the eight events the Tour has had this year. She’s 42nd on the money list.

The difference between almost any player on the FUTURES Tour and almost any player on the LPGA can be defined by one word: putting. LPGA players routinely drain anything inside 10 feet and are a good bet to make most putts within 20 feet, not so much in the minor league. I’d say that’s Bri’s problem as well. Her mom walks the course with her group (her father is on the bag). I asked Ms. Vega if Bri has a “putting guru.” She said, “No. But she’s so much better than a couple of years ago.” She needs a putting guru.

Overall her game was pretty average for that Tour. Both holes they used for driving distance were into a 5-10 mph wind (go figure – except one hole they usually use had lots of casual water in the landing area), Bri was around the 230 yard range. No wind I’d guess she’s in the 240-250 range which is about average. She hit fairways like a machine and her iron and wedge game were good. She missed putts I would have expected a Tour player to make.

Hey Di!

You seem to be more wired into the Duramed than most of us….I would be most interested in seeing stats on the kids playing there…You know, no. of events, finishes, money made, stroke average, etc…Any way you could get some of that stuff and let us know?….Thanks….STUB

Tour Stats

Stub, the Tour thoughtfully posts all those stats on their Web site, duramedfuturestour.com. Unfortunately, except for the money list, they only go down the first 15 places.

Thanks Di!

I think your right on the putting….Sometimes it boiles down to “I CAN DO THAT” and believing it….I have a book written by Dr. Bob Rotella, " golf is not a game of perfect"…and this is something he repeats over and over….STUB

Thank you!

I so enjoy the “behind the scenes” golf stories like these – what a great opportunity! Thank you for sharing.

My hope for this year is to head to the Champions Tour 3M Championship in Minnesota in August – they are letting all spectators in free! And I’m really hoping they will give Ken Green a special exemption.

(Many years ago there was an LPGA stop in Minnesota…I miss that).

It’s hard to top the PGA last year at Hazeltine though (Thanks Waggleroom for the pass last year!!) :-)

I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.

Dearest Stub,

Actually, I won the pass in a contest here last year – and I sent some photos from the Wednesday practice round. I just happened to live a few hundred miles away from Hazeltine…the road trip was SO worth it!
