The (Self) Decider: What Would You Shoot at Pebble Beach?

For the third year now, the USGA and Golf Digest have teamed up for their US Open Challenge.  The challenge gives three celebrity hackers (with an affinity for quarterbacks) and one average Joe or Jane the opportunity to play that year's host course for the national championship under conditions similar to the pressure-cooker final round.

This year, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, actor Mark Wahlberg, and the greatest hockey player ever Wayne Gretzky were the celebs.  51-year-old Peggy Ference was the amateur who got in through a Web vote.

Wahlberg - clearly feeling some Good Vibrations - shot 97.  Gretzky channeled his hockey jersey, but missed by 1 to hit 100 on the mark.  Brees, perhaps still distracted from saving birds in the Gulf, shot 102.  Ference shot 118.

Seeing as though Peggy had to play the course at its full 7040 yards ('cause that's what the players do on Sunday), Ference was screwed from the start.  Ironically, her caddy for the day was Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, who himself had his travails at the '02 Open when he couldn't reach some fairways at Bethpage Black.

Effectively, Peggy averaged a double bogey and change per hole.  Had she shot 107, she would have beaten the challenge considering the par raised to compensate for her length.

Now, this week, I want you to puff out your chest - and before wheezing back to reality - tell me what you think you would shoot in the challenge, and why.

125.

Though I usually play my best golf when I play in a group, instead of by myself, I am not good on par 5s and long par 4s.

100

I’m a 10-handicapper, but that is on local courses that rarely top 7000 yards. With the winds and green speeds at Pebble, I find it unlikely that I would play well at all.

I'd be happy to break 120

Never seen the course in person (will do for the first time next week) but considering US Open setups in the past, next week won’t be easy on the field.

Well, it depends.......

If I have to hit my driver, then probably 243(unless the course is set up for severe snap-hooks). If I can break my driver into pieces and leave them at the 1st tee, then I’m pretty sure I could break 100, maybe 90. Of course I would need a “few” practice rounds and I want Bones as my caddy. When do we leave????

EM I suggest we take them all on for a modest

wager of course…Four Ball….Me and Driver…jist like that old Crosby song….“straight down the middle, it went straight down the middle”…than we’d beat them to death with dead on pin Iron play….and putting….peshaw….2-3 footers mean nothing to us…Let us at um, let us at um….lol…STUB

As to what I’d shoot, I’d shoot myself in the toe so i wouldn’t have to play.

TX...U and I could do like Phil Harris used to

do when they played the Clam Bake there….Sit on a couch on the 17th tee with our drinks (lots of drinks, cause we wouldn’t want to get dehydrated ya know) and give interviews and snappy quotes….STUB

Playing the way I am now, I think I could break 90 depending on the wind…and if I didn’t, I’d blame it on the wind anyway plus the distracting views. :-)

in your dreams.

After penalties for hitting into the ocean, I’m thinking about 150 on a good day, and I’d do it with four clubs: driver, 5-iron, 56* wedge and putter.

You need to take a lesson from the movie “Arthur”. After he breaks up the wedding, Arthur talks about what they’ll do without all the Bach money. He says he’ll ride the subway…but doesn’t know how much it is.

Linda Marola (Liza Minelli): “It’s two dollars, but there’s a fifty dollar fine if you spit”
Arthur (Dudley Moore): “Thennnnnn…I won’t spit.”
Linda: “Good. None of the best people do.”

Just keep it out of the ocean ! You’re down to 102…just make a few putts. :-D

Me, Stub. I play 5,000 yard courses. 7,000 yards is a bit long for my game.

Do the forward tees at Pebble have any carry over the cliffs at 18 ?

D – I thought you were a sub-100 player. sub-90 ?
