The Players Championship Final Round Game Thread (Caps Optional)
We are about an hour away from the final group teeing off at TPC Sawgrass in the last round of the Players Championship.
Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the event with a neck injury, but had no prayer of catching leaders Lee Westwood and Robert Allenby. It may well be difficult for any player outside of the top 10 to make a move to the top of the leaderboard today. The best round on the course right now - 1:44pm ET - is -2.
So, does Westwood do it? Does he find a way to win a major-ish tournament in the wake of being bested by Phil Mickelson at the Masters?
Mickelson can now get to number one in the world with a win today, but he would have to tie history at the Players to overcome his five shot deficit in the final round. It was done last year by Henrik Stenson and in '98 by Justin Leonard.

WHERE IS THE "GO LUKE"? HOW FICKLE THEE ARE...
AND I SAY WE FOCUS ON TIGARS WITHDRAWEL…..INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW…WAS THE SUV AN ESCALADE? DID IT HAVE ALL IT’S WINDOWS? WHO WAS DRIVING? WHAT REHAB WAS HE WHISKED OFF TO? DOES THE TOUR HAVE A POLICY LIKE THE LADIES, THAT IF YOU SHOOT SO MANY OVER PAR, THAT YOU GET SPANKED? “HE HAD NO CHANCE TO CATCH THE LEADERS” CORRECT ME IF I’M WRONG, BUT TIGAR HAS ALWAYS ROLLED HIS HEAD….JUST GO BACK AND LOOK AT OLD FILM….OH MY GAWD…WON’T THE GC HAVE TALKING FODDER FOR WEEKS ON THIS ONE…STUB
I do love Luke Donald almost as much as Stewart
but Lee has a better chance of winning this one, so GO LEE WESTWOOD!!!!!
Also, I believe TW’s injury to be genuine – had the same thing myself a year ago and still haven’t recovered full feeling in fingers on left hand, despite lengthy physio treatment.
I'M sorry to hear that...hopefully, your
not left handed, so it doesn’t interfere with raising the glass?…STUB
Wendy darlin,
ya got my most sincere condolences on this your day of sorrow….lol….STUB
Didn't stay up late enough to see the result, STUB
as early tee-time this a.m. (Jealous, huh?) Lee just wasn’t in top form all day Sunday, so no big surprise. He’ll be back. V. happy for Tim anyway.
Jumpin, I saw the most drop dead
gorgeous woman on the balcony of the club house and some mousy dweeb trying to drape himself all over her….Was that you? har, har, har…..lol STUB
har har har stubbo
My g/f is a beauty , but I am not at all mousey :o) We have been on the balcony since 3:00 pm today and still are. WiFi is a beautifull thing. Heading out to a Players party shortly.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Haven't I seen this before?
a guy is playing a big match. it’s going pear shaped for him. all of a sudden he feigns injury. “oh, my arm. i think it’s broke.”
too bad Danny Noonan wasn’t around to take over for Eldrick!
the guy was two over. he missed the cut last week and shot, what, 78 ? and he didn’t quit then. he’s not going to quit on Sunday in a tournament like the players just because he was 2 over.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
he had no shot
with the way he was hitting it and the conditions of the course. so he packed it in. did he quit the US Open when he had the “bad knee”? no, because he was in contention.
where is Danny Noonan when you need him?

LOL
None of us know what really happened, but I will say in my opinion that it is suspect at best. He did say in his (post round ) interview on Saturday night that he felt great and that he thought his Saturday round was one of his better ones. No mention of any trama at that point and suddenly a kneck injury that was suppose to have been going on since the Masters ? hmmmmmmmm I did see tiger walking around the clubhouse on Wed. and again on Friday and he didn’t appear to have an issue at either of those times, but I’m no doctor. On the practice range things seemed normal (health wise) JMHO
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
come on pro – you’re an ex pro-athlete. you know better than most how protective an athlete is about his health – you never want to show weakness. and you know that sometimes a nagging little injury can turn extremely painful with just one wrong move.
take what you know from the guy’s past – does quitting seem like something he would do ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
maybe he wasn't able to
make eye contact with any of the candy outside the ropes and said..“what the hey” and decided to pack it in for the week….Seriously…his demeanor all this year is puzzling, as it is a complete switch from his past….I’m talking the hang dog attitude he displayed at the Masters, and even during the Players…..Something isn’t right in Chicago, as smelly as that place is….Go back to his playing on a bad leg….the post is right….HE WAS IN CONTENTION and knew damm well that Rocco would shoot himself in the foot…..and that’s what he did, waited for RM to make the mistake….I hope I’m wrong….any Doctors out there?,,,,this could well be the end of chasing Jack’s record…..STUB
Ok Fess up EM
how did you play the lakes?…I think Del Webb did the development and is using the club to see the real estate….that’s what I heard anyway….STUB
it’s a tough call from what I understand. there have been guys who have had to give up the Tour because of neck injuries. none of this can be easy for the guy – while he understands that he can’t win every time he tees it up, he’s used to winning and having things go his way. yep – he brought this dark cloud on himself, but I hope he can get it turned around.

Court there is.......
No comparison with injury from boxing and golf. Golf is mechanical and boxing is physical. I fought with cracked ribs for years and other fighters knew about it, so I had to change up my defense and strategy overall. The only similarities I see with the two sports is the mental aspect of it. In boxing you get injured immediately upon contact while in the ring and you need to have the mental capacity to overcome the pain on the spot. It’s the heart and the will to continue under severe pain in a lot of cases. Like it says below in my personal quote , “Pain Is Only Weakness Leaving The Body” and it takes all ones mental capacity to overcome that in the ring. jumpn/progolf
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
I wasn’t comparing boxing and golf – I was just saying that you know that an ache can turn really painful if you move the wrong way. I’m sure you’ve tweeked an ankle, but when you picked up the rope, it really started to hurt. (first example that popped to mind) Or maybe a wrist that got worse doing a usually simple drill.
Golf is rotary around the spine. The spine can be very fragile. If you can’t turn around your neck, you can’t make a good swing.
At the US Open, his doctors said that they wouldn’t play on that knee and leg, but he wasn’t going to do any more damage to it if he did play.
At Sawgrass, if his neck stiffened up enough to make it difficult to swing – there would be no reason to take a chance on doing even more damage to his neck or spine.
Don’t forget that great physio – Mike Tyson – “It’s spinal”. :-)

Just wanna add that the difference in the size of the
gloves in the two sports is sizable.
I agree Court.
I was one of the people who thought TW exaggerated the pain in his leg at US Open, but whatever one thinks of TW the person, he has never been a quitter on the golf course. It would have been pretty stupid of him to continue and risk more serious damage. I do think the injury is genuine and was the cause of some of his extraordinary poor shots on Sunday.
At least I’m sure he’ll get better (the best) medical treatment than I did for a pulled muscle/trapped nerve which kept me away from golf for months. I don’t want to see him go out of golf like this.
didn't eldrick
quit a US Open before. 1995 at Shinnecock. he kept hitting it in the rough and then feigned a wrist injury.

surgery?????????????????
the Open was June 18th. he played a tour event on July 9th. that must have been some devastating injury.
by freeze gopher on May 10, 2010 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions
end of the season – he’s had wrist surgery once and knee surgery three times
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
so then you agree.......
had he been playing well in that open he would have continued on.
by freeze gopher on May 10, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
No – I can’t agree or disagree. It’s a moot question. He wasn’t playing well and then he injured his wrist. We don’t know if he wasn’t playing well because of the wrist in the first place.
This thing with the neck, according to Tiger, was causing his arms and hands to tingle – which can cause weakness in the hands. If he couldn’t hold on to the club, he couldn’t play.
Either way – I don’t know.

So Court
We did all this blabbering on for nothing. If you look at my origional post regarding this topic I said…."""None of us know what really happened, but I will say in my opinion that it is suspect at best.""" It would appear that is the case after all. geee wizards {;o)
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
lol – I didn’t tell you what to think or believe – I just said that I can’t say what happened 12 years ago with exact certainty.

And kudos, PG, for artfully adding an Alfalfa cowlick
to your smiley face. Groundbreaking.
I just got this from a dishonest
used car salesman….the rumor, and at this point is it’s still a rumor, is that they are going to cut off his head and replace it with a clone from Woody Austin…..THAT WOULD MAKE HIM WOODY WOOD….yuk, yuk, yuk….STUB
TXQ it's actualy
Suppose to resemble a Golf Cap but the Alfalfa inference works also.. O Tay Panky ?
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
There is a Tiger news conference at 2:00 PM today
Why ? I have no clue, but I just heard about it.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
It’s not a Tiger Woods news conference – it’s tied to a media day event for the AT&T. The Tiger Woods Foundation is still the main charity for the tournament, so he was either going to be there or do a remote. Never heard which, but he said he was going to get an MRI and some other tests today.
