Sean Foley Wants These Vicious, Positive Rumors About Him to Stop
The rumors were running rampant earlier in the week at Sawgrass that Sean Foley was going to add Tiger Woods to his stable of players. The O'Hair-Woods-Foley triangle was just to juicy to ignore, what with everyone calling for Hank Haney's head and all. (By the way, Haney has gone under the guillotine probably a half-dozen times since working with Woods. The guy is bulletproof.)
Having your name dropped by several news outlets after an initial public report surfaced seems like something you might want to bask in for a few days. But not so for the contrarian Foley, who issued a press release this afternoon to squash the rumors.
"I have not talked to Tiger about coaching in any form whatsoever," Foley said.
Woods responded after yesterday's round to the rumors of Haney's demise for the second time this week, saying, "Hank and I talk every day, so nothing's changed. ... According to the press, I've fired him five times by now over the course of my four years, or whatever it was, six years?"
(See? Bulletproof.)
Putting the pieces together about Foley, his outspoken nature, and his previously stated interest in working with Woods led to mixed signals and hardly a conclusion - though the evidence seemed to point against a Woods-Foley partnership for a number of reasons.
According to a source, Woods' people were keen to squash the rumors about Haney's place. The comments from Woods and Haney - including those made to Waggle Room - were tantamount to a PR blitz as far as it goes about the typically fickle nature of Tour swing coach job security.
With the Foley rumor now done, let's just make up another rumor. Jim Flick, c'mon down! At least it wouldn't be Butch!

"this ball will fit in that fairway"
For the record, I didn’t start the rumor. Reporters did at Sawgrass and then it got out.

Seems to me that being guillotine-proof is what’s keeping Haney ahead of the game.
psst…guillotines don’t have bullets….and the LAST thing you do is stay “a head” of anything on one. (bah-dum-bum) :-D
