Zach Johnson and Tom Lehman make the Midwest proud
If there are three things Zach Johnson seems to enjoy more than anything else, it's tailored suit jackets, Texas, and Georgia. Johnson added another jacket (a tartan one) and another title in the Lonestar state on Sunday, capping off consecutive 64s on the weekend to keep Brian Davis in the bridesmaid role once again.
His 21 under total for the week at Colonial bested Kenny Perry's previous total of 19 under. Playing through three weather suspensions during the final round, Johnson managed to close with a 31 on the back nine that included six birdies. That back nine, coupled with only 26 putts for the round, allowed Johnson to blitz the field and walk away with the tartan jacket. It was the kind of weekend he needed given the perfect scoring conditions.
Like a lot of players on tour, it only takes one week to turn a mediocre season into a successful one. Johnson hasn't been the model of consistency this year. His best finish in 2010 was a T-12 at the Sony Open, and the tournament prior to this one was a missed cut at the Valero (a tournament he'd already won twice) that included a first round 80.
Sometimes there's no way to predict when success will come your way.
Notes:
Brian Davis was 54 for 54 inside 8 feet until his missed birdie putt on the 17th. The Englishman started walking towards the hole, already certain the putt was going down. It didn't fall, going in and out of the cup to end Davis' chances for the second time this year. He also led the field in putting for the week. ... The final rain delay on Sunday was a strange one. After spending 45 minutes waiting for the weather to pass, the final two groups finished in a light summer rain with the sun still shining. How often do you see that? ... Scott Verplank enjoyed a nice stretch of golf on Saturday and Sunday. While his final round 65 was impressive, his stretch of 35 straight holes without dropping a shot to par was even better.
Lehman wins in Colorado to claim second major championship
It's not exactly one of the four majors on the PGA Tour, but it's a major non the less. Lehman captured the 71st Senior PGA Championship on Sunday with a three-man playoff victory over David Frost and Fred Couples.
After grinding it out during the final round, Lehman found things a lot easier in the playoff. Couples was forced to take a drop after finding the brush off the tee; Frost's tee shot found the bunker on the left. Neither was able to recover from there.
Lehman, who just turned 50 in October, joined Couples in the group of new fifty-somethings to make their mark on the Champions Tour. Watching Couples and Lehman on the tee during the playoff, I could've sworn I was watching a replay of an old PGA Tour event. To be honest, it was pretty damn cool.
It's just another reason why the Champions Tour is so watchable these days.

Both of these guys
are great representatives of the game of golf. Men of high character and wonderful role models for young golfers. Some fringe fans would say they play boring golf, but I would suggest that a great shot or great putt is NEVER boring. Nice to see Brian Davis in contention again……another man of great integrity…..hopefully he will get that “W” soon.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Hey EM
Plan on coming home next week if we can get some paperwork finished….Has been a very enlightening trip…..will send an E-mail when I get home….How’s the game holding up? STUB
Game sucks......
thinking about taking up bowling……lol
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
You won't lose as many balls bowling,
though I’ve never seen you bowl.
And the caddies complain if you carry
more than 4 or 5 in your bag.
Hadn't thought about that.......maybe I should just stick with the small ball....lol
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Such a personnal question......lol
Well, I haven’t shot 90 this year, but I’ve gone from a 1.2 index last spring to what will be a 7 or 8 tomorrow when the new months update comes out. My best score this year is a 71, but the last few months I’m lucky to break 80……I’m a basket case…thanks for your bleeding heart……..lol Hey Stub, how much do you charge for lessons???
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
Wendy.......did you put a "hex" on my drives????
If so, would you please UN-hex me. Thanks. (let me know when you’re done)
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
I did, just can figure out which end of the club to hold....lol
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
No hex on you, Em
despite my envy of your index.
I’m not a superstitious person, but on the golf course I never wish a bad shot on anyone as I think it rebounds. Doesn’t mean to say that I don’t wish the odd person stubs a big toe in other spheres of life of course!
Ahh, so eight of my toes are safe
for the time being.

False assumption
Mmmm, now let’s see, what mishaps can I come up for your other eight little piggies?
Wendy......my reference to the "hex"
was your threat to put one on Easy if he didn’t wave…….I was afraid you might have missed him and hit me……..one can’t be too careful when it comes to snap hooking your driver.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
I did get the reference, Em - but
I’m afraid you’ll have to look elsewhere for your errant drives. I assure you I am a very straight driver (well, apart from that duffer last week when playing thru’).
Confident Easing will give me a wave from IOW – but he also knows I can’t read semaphore.
When I served in the Royal Navy
I was Radar ops…and a good one…EW and communications with flags didn’t apply to me..I could light a fire at midnight on the 28th of August…that or i’ll take a ferry across for the day and see if Wendy’s club is worth a tenner on a twilight round, lol
Not my club - bit inland
but Crookhorn GC which is on top of Portsdown Hill, (2 mins. uphill from me) is magical at twilight. You can see the IOW from there. Used to play the first 3 holes again and again on a summer’s evening after work ’til too dark to see.
Your comments are so good, Easing, I figured you were a
coast writer. Are you actually Courtgolf?

I'll' tell ya whats nice
it’s Wall finally waking up and doing what he was supposed to for the last 2 weeks….Let’s not jist all be back slapping him yet….He still has to prove he can stay awake and at the key board for more than a couple hours at a time…..Well, Wall, how ya like them apples? Welcome aboard…..I don’t think you can sell the Champions Tour short….Yea, they, with the exception of a few…don’t bomb it quite as far, but the shot making is great….If all the duffers of the world would watch the Old Farts, and the Ladies, I would suggest that they could lower their handicaps by at least 3-4 shots…..STUB
Thanks!
Hah, well I was on assignment covering a couple of Texas tournaments for the last few weeks, so I apologize for leaving everyone in the dark. I’ll be sure to be a bigger presence on the weekends from here on out. Ryan knew I was going to be away during the first few weekends. Sorry I didn’t make that clear to everyone else.
Regardless, thanks for the welcome! I think the Champions Tour could make some noise going forward. There are far too many big names from the PGA Tour making their way over to the senior circuit for it not to succeed. I really enjoyed watching the playoff on Sunday. It actually had me flipping between the two tourneys for most of the afternoon.
Also, I wanted to let everyone know that I’ve got very thick skin, so keep firing the opinions my way. I’m always up for some good banter.

Lehman was on XM this morning...
…terrific interview. He was as shocked as anybody at the playoff yesterday. His caddy had to ask what everybody was hitting.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
of course – that’s what officials and score keepers are there for. you can get information like that – you just can’t get advice on clubs or yardage…that sort of thing
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Ryans on his honeymoon for how long ?
Its been two weeks already, He’s gonna wear his Driver out.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
He may be installing dust ruffles and boxing up all his former manly possessions. :-)
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
So Court what your saying is...
Ryan is packing up all of his pants cause he won’t be needing them any longer ?
