Barron Denied Entry to US Open, Shares Letter from USGA
Doug Barron, the first and only player suspended under the PGA Tour's Anti-Doping Program, released a letter to Waggle Room sharing that he will be ineligible to qualify for or play in this summer's US Open at Pebble Beach.
Here is the letter from Mike Davis, USGA Senior Director of Rules and Competitions.
Davis cites the USGA's agreement with the PGA Tour to honor any and all suspensions levied by the PGA Tour for their championships. Currently, Barron is in the midst of a one year suspension from golf for positive drug tests just prior to the St. Jude Classic last season during Barron's lone PGA Tour start in '09.
Barron is suing the PGA Tour in response to the suspension, and a legal response is required from the PGA Tour by the middle of this month for items pertaining to case discovery.

Just for a wild minute here,
I get the feeling that I hope Mr. Barron prevails in this charade….Personally, I think Ol Timmy could be/should be taken down just a mite….Do we all get to vote on this??? I cast my vote in favor of…..STUB
Any policy that has a subjective element to it, such as giving the Commissioner the discretion to alter the penalty as he deems fit, just seems to invite controversy.
But in this case I think the debate needs to go back even further to determine why the Tour denied the use of a drug that seems to me was intended to get a player back to a base level, not to “enhance”. It appears other players have been allowed to use these same drugs, yet Barron was denied (twice).
Ultimately, Barron chose to disregard the Tour’s deinal and in turn was tested – the question of whether that test was actually “random” seems up for debate, too…but knowing his situation, I imagine Barron was not surprised.
I don’t think having a drug policy is out of line – but I do think that the Tour needs to be open and flexible enough to recognize when a policy creates too many limitiations. I feel the same way about Barron as I do about Ken Green – sometimes when situations like this arise, it means it’s time to relook at the policies.
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
Red.....great comment!
I couldn’t finish 18 holes last summer and was dragging by the 14th. I had always been able to play all day, so I was concerned at my total lack of energy. After a series of tests and blood tests, it was confirmed that I had Low T (low testosterone). My doctor started me on a testosterone gel which almost immediately improved my energy level…..it also increased my agressiveness and I would lose my temper in a heartbeat. The worse part was the weight gain….25lbs in 3 months. I called the doctor and was put on a once a month injection. I’ve lost 20lbs of the weight and my temper is back under control. In no way has it enhanced my performance, as my hdcp has gone up 4 strokes, but at least I now feel like playing……I just wish it would help my game!
