Pavin Not Promising Anything to Woods

With the next installment of the Ryder Cup just around the corner, United States captain Corey Pavin isn't ready to promise anything to Tiger Woods.

According to an article posted on the New York Times website, Pavin suggests that Woods will not be guaranteed a spot on the US Team and will have to earn his way onto the team just like everybody else.

Tiger Woods is not guaranteed a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team and will have to play his way on like every other player, skipper Corey Pavin said on Sunday. Woods, who took five months out of the game after his private life unravelled at the end of 2009 and has suffered neck problems since his return, is currently 11th in the U.S. Ryder Cup points race. "I'm not going to treat Tiger any different than any other player," Pavin told Reuters after the final round of the Byron Nelson Championship. "He's certainly not going to be an automatic pick.

"He's just going to be treated like everyone else. I'd love to have him on the team but I want him to be playing well," added Pavin, who said he had not spoken to Woods this year.

In all honesty, I wouldn't hate the idea of Tiger being kept off the team for the sake of not drawing unneeded drama to the event. After all, the United States did just fine without Woods on the roster during the last Ryder Cup, ultimately defeating Team Europe in impressive fashion. Regardless of the "drama factor", Woods might keep himself off the team if his recent stretch of poor play continues in his upcoming tournaments.

Pavin is a smart man

Just like a good “Boat Captain”, Pavin has the duty of keeping his crew, steady as she goes.

ahoy matey

SOMEone spent some time on the water recently :-)

Well said, pro !

This takes the pressure off of both Pavin and Woods. If Woods doesn’t get himself together before The Ryder Cup, he surely doesn’t want the expectations on his head. Besides, the US Team won the last time he wasn’t on the team.

Indeed I did court.

My g/f and I had a peacefull time out at Star Island out at the Isles of Shoals http://pelicansarepelicans.com/vols/darren/images/IslesOfShoals.jpg Now it’s time to spend the rest of this week with the Boys of Seacoast NH , deep sea fishing and playing some golf.

wow – that sounds like fun ! how many boats do you have to put together to make a golf hole ? must be hard to read a putt with the deck bobbing up and down all the time. (lol)

Tomorrow

7:00 am tee time at Wentworth by the Sea CC and then we will be out fishing for Haddock and Cod by 1:00 pm. My g/f went up to Maine with her friends for a few days of outlet shopping and a visit to LL Bean in Freeport. The boys and I may drive a few balls out in to the Atlantic from the upper boat deck. Lets just hope we don’t end up in a Seinfeld episode.

Court, the only thing he'll catch

is “pitchers elbow” from hoisting the cans….and as far as Pavin goes….good for him….he is a tough nut, you can see that by the way he grinds it out….Did I read somewhere that his wife is going to design the players outfits? I think there should not be captains picks….let everyone play their way in….“no play, no pay” or something like that.l….STUB

Stubbo

I agree with your no captains pick, either play your way in or nothing. Cans ? I don’t drink beer, but you already knew that. I’ll have a 72 oz of premixed Barcardi and Coke on board. “Yo Ho Ho” and a bottle of rum. Then again I am an Ole Salt from waaaay back.

I hadn’t heard that about Pavin’s wife. Let’s just hope she doesn’t have a flashback to those hideous shirts the team had to wear in Boston a few ties back. Wasn’t that Pavin’s last year on the team ?

"The Captainess"

Pavin’s term for his wife on Twitter, couldn’t possibly design anything worse than those shirts – was it Ben Crenshaw’s team? Don’t remember. Anyway, what I find nauseous is matching outfits for the WAGS. Puullease!

I’m sure the idea of not playing Ryder Cup keeps TW awake at nights. Huh!

by WendyUK on May 24, 2010 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

Wendy darlin,

thanks for the Lounger and Martinis…the tidbits were also great…..the matching outfits for the WAGS this time are to be skimpy bikini’s, featuring the red white and blue…High heels are to be optional….And TW doesn’t stay awake at night, he takes sleeping pills to ward off any bad dreams….Now, this is just a rumor mind you, came at the same time as Fergie’s selling the rights to her ex….come to think of it, it was in the same article….BUT, and I’m dishing the dirt here, It’s rumored that unless he is guaranteed absolutely perfect weather, he won’t play…STUB

You're welcome STUB

although you may need a blanket to go with your pillow this w/e as our mini heatwave is over. Amazing no. of cocktail sticks and olive stones in my gravel circle.

Poor old Fergie – if she had a brain she would be dangerous.

Wales – perfect weather? For aquatics maybe.

I got a good tan base this weekend for Spain a week Sunday, Wendy...

If that damn volcano behaves itself that is…hows the golf going btw? And what do you play off ? Just in case I’m down south…last time I played matchplay with a lady, she drove of the ladies tee and I was 40 yards behind her…I had to give her 18 shots…and I lost. She did drink pints of Stella however…we were even there, :)

by Easingwold on May 26, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I hit my drive 250

not bad at 50 years old at the time…it was the first tee. The ladies tee was 70 yards ahead and she hit it 220…needless to say I knew I was against it.

by Easingwold on May 26, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Easy, jist remember....

THE RAIN IN SPAIN STAYS MAINLY IN THE PLAIN….I get the feeling that Wendy can be quite the sandbagger…probably about a 3-4….And 250? hell, I can’t see 250 with binoculars….STUB

by thinker on May 26, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Perfect timing for Spain methinks

Volcano slowing down too I believe. Sorry to disappoint but I play off 18 (was 14 but never got that back after pulled shoulder muscle/pinched nerve). Also can’t motivate myself to pick up those damn dumbells & get little more muscle back. Want to excuse my lack of 200+ yd. drives based on height/weight (lack of) but that Ai Miyazato proves me a liar. Have to accept that age is one factor, but stubborness probably even more so. I persist in playing driver, 3w, chipper (as in years gone by) but my chipping is now absolute ****. If I used a different club combination (& commonsense) , I would be on the green (still 3 shots for most par 4s), but I REFUSE. It’s me vs that chipper to the death. TMI? Sorry. You can win on the Stellas as well – I only drink half pints.

by WendyUK on May 27, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

VERRRY interesting....

it is well documented, that most of the top sandbaggers use a 14-18 handicap to reel the suckers in….And oh yea….that pulled muscle/nerve conversation always comes up on the first tee when the bets are laid….Jist a suggestion…..leave the damm chipper at home….use a hybrid or such instead….much more room for error….Interesting, as I just saw an ad on TV last evening for “stellas”…guess we’ll have it in the colonies soon enough…..Is you chef/husband doing shrimps or such on the barbie again this w/e? Please convey my regards, as those last ones were superb…..STUB

by thinker on May 27, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Would I lie to you, old friend?

Until those nice lads invited me to play with them ( the ones who wouldn’t mark their ball) they told me they thought I was a 14 handicapper because they had only seen my tee/fairway shots (drive for show). Now they have seen my crappy chip shots, I’ve lost my edge with them. B*****.

Guests this w/e (veggies), will have to sneak into website.

by WendyUK on May 27, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

After IT's (obviously not mine) performance today

the chipper dies. Planning pond burial on 12th. Also, invited to play through by 4-ball today, rushed & tried to show off. Hey , I ‘m the “special one” (football reference for Easing) I can hole in one. Totally duffed it. Tell myself that there isn’t a single pathetic shot that someone hasn’t hit before me – still humiliating. Shrimp? It’s crow for supper.

by WendyUK on May 28, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t feel bad – I think everybody does that. You want to hit the great shot – but you want to do it extra fast and the two just don’t go together.

chipper…it’s a wasted club. just choke down on the ol’ 7-iron and play it a little back in the stance.

I've never gotten myself into an argument or even

a civil debate with Court for two reasons:

1) I always know when to retreat.

2) My comments usually (read: always) fall short of serious, so Court can’t deploy his two usual weapons to shoot down commenters: facts and knowledge.

 I hate those damn things.

and you playing off 18 is formidable…I’m 10 at my best so far…and I’m no spring chiken. Funny you mention the shoulder…I ripped it playing rugby 25 years ago and can’t throw with that arm ever since. Commonsense ? Whats that ? :) Here is your half lass.

I wonder how long it will be

before someone comes out and accuses Pavin of being racist, or a hater. It may not happen now, but if he doesn’t choose Tiger……you can count on it happening.

Racist/Hater ???

OK,…Captn. Corey can have my white sheet and hood .lmao. Good for Corey. Only guys that earn their way to Wales should be on the squad. If TW wants to get there , he’ll earn his way.The question is,… “Does he really want it that bad ?” Too many other issues of a higher priority, imo. We’ll be fine without him, just like 2008.

you're still away,...choke on it !

Pressure on Pavin

Pavin will have a tremendous amount of pressure on him from the Ryder Cup’s financial stakeholders to put Tiger on the team. His only hope will be for Tiger to withdraw his name from contention, if he’s obviously not deserving of a spot.

that’s probably a good bet. If he’s not playing well, or the neck isn’t healed, he isn’t going to (1) hinder the team, (2) embarrass himself, or (3) give that bunch of rowdies anything other than what has happened around him since Thanksgiving to ride him about, much less the tabloids.

Court.. ya got that right

“the rowdies” will be out in full force, and after a few libations, it could get even uglier….I really don’t think that those with financial stakes, will have too much input with Pavin….He would probably tell them all to stick it where the sun doesn’t shine…and if they didn’t like it, tough…Also I think that no one of that side of things would withdraw….too much money to be made, and that’s all they want anyway…..STUB
