A Six-Putt? Wow, Greg Norman Must Really Hate Zach Johnson
The Valero Texas Open is being played this week for the first time at TPC San Antonio's new Oaks Course. (The course has a title sponsor. Really. It's AT&T.) It was designed by Greg Norman with a big assist from player consultant Sergio Garcia. Perhaps it is that this is the first time the Tour has seen the course, but scoring yesterday was brutal. Less than 40 players out of 154 broke par in round one. Garcia himself had a tough day, including a fried egg lie in a very soft bunker.
Zach Johnson had a tougher day. The defending champion from La Cantera - the old TX Open venue - shot 80 in the first round of his defense. That 80 included a six-putt. You read that right.
On the par-3 13th, Johnson hit his tee shot 84 long feet away from the pin. He lagged to a very respectable 10 feet. From there? 5 putts. Boom, six-putt.
Johnson had a brief presser after the round. Defending champions typically do after day one (and sometimes two). By brief, I mean, curt.
Q. Anything in particular that happened?
ZACH JOHNSON: All aspects. Very poor.Q. You had showed some concern about the course coming in.
ZACH JOHNSON: Wasn't the golf course. The wind wasn't severe like it has been. Our rules staff did an awesome job of setting it up. Moved it up a little bit. On the whole they did a great job.Q. When is the last time you posted this kind of number, do you recall?
ZACH JOHNSON: No.Q. I was looking --
ZACH JOHNSON: Typically block those numbers out.Q. I was thinking back as far as I can find. I don't know the last time I saw it.
ZACH JOHNSON: I don't know, either.Q. Tomorrow?
ZACH JOHNSON: Grind. That's all there is to it.
And there you have it. We'll see you next week, Zach.

When I six-putt I usually
break for lunch after 3. Just to collect my thoughts.
What a typical media moron – badger the guy until you get the answer you want. Those are the guys who should have their credentials pulled.
Hey Zach – next time you get an idiot like that, the answer is “I missed an 18 incher for a five putt.”
I liked the looks of the new course – but MAN did it look hard and fast. Watching balls hit the front of the green and run through the back was amazing. Like something that happens to me – not a pro who can spin the ball.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
I agree with you there court
Regarding the reporter Bagering Zach until he got the answer he was hoping for. They have been doing the same thing to many players asking about TW and it just isn’t fair to them at all.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Video
I can’t find video of the six-putt. Has anyone seen it?

Everything he wanted to know about six
but was afraid to ask.
Let's put this into perspective...Norman
said, he was designing an Open type course…re: HARD….Also, this is the first time they have played here…No one knows anything about the course, or the greens….It’s not like having played for several years on the same one, so they know every break, etc. And the wind hasn’t arrived yet, which it is supposed to do….than, watch the fun start…Frankly, this is what I like….They are Professionals, let them play like such…never mind the putt putt golf where 22 under wins….Maybe this will allow us to see some shot making for a change….I for one hope so, but that’s just my Humble Opinion…..STUB
Not a ZJ fan
but today showed his character. He had NO chance to make the cut, yet still went out and shot a 68. That included making birdie on the last 2 holes. I have no problem with the reporter asking him those questions as Zach is one of those “hot/cold” guys towards the media. He isn’t known as being friendly at all when things don’t go well, so I can’t jump on a guy trying to get a quote. Anyway, he is a true competitor that plays the game the right way.
