Japanese Golfer Suspends Herself for 11 Tournaments, Looks at Ben Crane With Disgust
Slow play is rampant in pro golf. It's on every tour, every week. The PGA Tour is so complacent about the epidemic that they have not penalized, fined, or suspended a guy for slow play in some two decades. The women's game is a little bit better about it, but still losing in a race to molasses most weeks.
Enter Japanese golfer Yuko Mitsuka. Last week, Mitsuka was playing in the World Ladies Championship and was penalized two strokes for slow play. So distraught by the penalty, she dropped her clubs and walked off the course. Strange, but ok.
The JLPGA then proceeds to fine her a record 2 million...yen - $21,590. On top of that, Mitsuka disqualified herself from the next 11 JLPGA events.
What? Well, she performed this act of falling on the sword to show contrition for the tantrum. She did that because the JLPGA has a track record as being quite the group of disciplinarians.
In 2006, the JLPGA doled out the stiffest penalty perhaps since this side of the Pete Rose debacle. A A player was banned for a decade in '06 for turning in a falsified scorecard. Man, Annie Brophy would be in some serious do-do if she was playing the JLPGA!
And we wonder why Japanese game shows are so weird to us. The culture seems at times to take things to the absolute extreme.

good story…but you really need a new poster boy. Crane has improved his pace immensely. Just because he has some bizarre shot rating and left brain/right brain thing going on doesn’t mean he is playing slow. He hasn’t been holding up play and tournaments have been running faster than we’re used to seeing this entire year.
Remember – just because he looks slow at his shots doesn’t mean he is playing slow. There is a lot of time walking between shots where players make up time.

I do need a new poster boy, but I don’t have one yet :) Recommendations?

not off the top of my head – but since things are moving along at a very nice clip, even binging up the subject seems like a stretch.

why ? if things have changed, it’s not right to hang old raps on the guy.

Then I need my replacement! See my dilemma? :)

lol – yep – how about picking on Joe Slow-guy at your local course who can’t break 100, but has to “read” a putt from every possible angle before laying up 10 feet short…or long ? The pros are making progress. It’s just hard to see on TV.

I'm up in New Hampshire this week
I played behind an 88 year old guy and a couple of other duffers. Finaly by the 3rd hole they let us play through. I asked the old buck if he can shoot his age of 88 and he says, "You betcha Sonny but only on the back 9 from the yellow tee’s. OMG, I about keeled over laughing so hard. Made my day he did. ;o)
