Hank Haney Resigns as Tiger Woods' Coach

Hank Haney has resigned as Tiger Woods' coach, according to a statement on his Website.

"I have informed Tiger Woods this evening that I will no longer be his coach" headlines the letter.

Haney continues, saying, "I would like to thank Tiger for the opportunity that I have had to work with him over the past 6 plus years. Tiger Woods has done the work to achieve a level of greatness that I believe the game of golf has never seen before and I will always appreciate the opportunity that I have had to contribute to his successes."

Woods' now former swing coach concludes the letter by saying, "I wish Tiger well, not only with his golf, but in finding peace and happiness in all aspects of his life. Tiger knows that if he ever needs me in anyway, whether it be with his golf or just as a friend he can always call."

When contacted by Waggle Room, Haney said, "I am thankful for the great opportunity and proud of the record Tiger has had with me helping him."

In a statement to Golf Channel, Haney adds, "I will always look back upon our past half dozen years together as my best days in professional golf.  It would be a dream of any coach to have a student like Tiger woods and for me it has come true.  Just so there is no confusion I would like to make it clear that this is my decision."

Haney and Woods worked together for nearly six years.  As for what Haney's immediate plans may be, he told me, "I have a beautiful wife that I want to spend some time with."

On his Website today, Woods responded to Haney's announcement last night.

Wow

I thought Tiger was about to fire him. I guess Haney didn’t want to give him the chance. Do you think that Tiger will work with Harmon again, or just find someone new?

Two Things...
  • Anyone who believes Haney’s statement at face value would also believe I’m a scratch golfer.
  • The ‘who is Tiger’s coach’ may be the most useless story in professional golf. The percentage of pros who stay with one coach for their entire careers is small.

Long overdue !

I never liked the “flat plane” approach by Haney for TW’s swing. Tigerhead old friend, I told ya this was coming right after the 2008 US Open. Haney is a desciple of Hogan, and that’s how Ben played,…..flat. Hogan however was 5’-7", while Woods is 6’-2". Wrong application in my view. Harmon understands the dynamics of the driver swing better than most. He teaches/taught an abundance of tall players to drive it well, and Woods was at his best under Harmon. Watney, Els, Phil are all tall players. Even Freddie has worked with Harmon. There is a distinct difference in application of plane theory between tall players and shorter guys. I don’t see TW ever going back to Harmon. That’s a pair of over-sized ego’s and very stubborn men. Besides,…Harmon has too much of Woods competition and he likes exclusivity. Won’t happen with Harmon as Woods will NEVER compensate BH enough. Woods’ being a tight ass was major in their split. No turning back, imo………………………Z.

While I agree with you here 3's, Faldo flattened his swing

for more control. At 6 ft 3 in he was an exception wanted to keep the ball lower and lost yards with his driver with his “held off” swing . Before that he had the Miller reverse C swing but ballooned the ball. Swinging with a flatter plane worked great before the bombers arrived and blew him away. Wouldn’t work these days. Faldo himself teaches young players to hit the ball out there. Now, I agree, Harmon would sort him out, but I got the feeling after he sacked Fluff, he got rid of Harmon too, for the so called fame Harmon got from being tigers coach. Harmon does commentating for our Sky Sports, talked a lot about Tiger in those days, I got the feeling Tiger didn’t like his coach talking to millions of TV viewers about his swing and got rid of him. Have you heard any of that (commentating) being a factor in their parting of ways ?

by Easingwold on May 11, 2010 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Fluff wasn’t fired for “fame” reasons. That was a media creation – Tiger never gave a reason. I think he was fired because Tiger had outgrown the “caddy leading the player” relationship he had with Fluff. He took on Stevie Williams because they are closer in age and work together more as a team than as a student.

Harmon wasn’t exactly a media star when Tiger was with him. I always got the feeling that Tiger left to get a new perspective on the swing. Harmon hammered smart play and fundamentals.

EZ

You are spot on re: Faldo. He is a big guy, and used to be in fantastic condition. I mean Olympic athlete condition.!!The flatter swing, ala Hogan, used to work very well until we all fell in love with “long ball” golf. Equipment got longer, balls hotter, club faces trampolined the ball, etc. Ball striking went by the wayside. Today even the short hitters have 300 yds when they need it. Tall players have a huge advantage with the modern equipment. Get your hands as high in the back swing as you can, and create width and speed. I’m 6"-5" and I have really noticed the increase in my game. It’s stupid long these days, and when I was a kid of 20(lean & mean) I wasn’t particularly long. Today 600 yd par 5’s are nothing. I like the groove change however, as it does make ya hit fairways.Huge difference at the Tour level. Now ball strikers can compete against the bombers.See Tim Clark. You’re right about Harmon & Fluff gettin’ a little too rich for Tiger’s temperment. The biggest deal with Harmon was the $ 1 million plus he billed Woods in 2000 . He never charged Woods during a season, as their agreement was a % at years end. Tiger and Earl were livid, and that was the begining of the end. They parted ways in 2002 mostly because of $$$ .That’s Tiger……………………Z.

I realize it’s easy to find an exception to every rule and try to tear down a good idea – but Matt Kuchar is in that 6’3" or 6’4" area and he has gone from one of the most upright swings to one of the flattest swings and is doing pretty well.

Not disagreeing on Tiger’s swing getting flatter and flatter. Could his changing physique and his list of injuries be causing the flattening ?

court

Kuchar is indeed an exception. However , he isn’t considered a great driver of the ball. He’s a good iron player, but for a guy his size,he gives up a lot of distance. My back goes into spasm everytime I watch him swing. He’s gonna have issues in the lower back if he dosn’t already. He’s practically the opposite of Jim Furyk’s move.. Way too inside in my view and too much emphasis on squaring the club with his hands. Under the gun, it’s the fast muscles that give us control issues. Back and legs are more stable. When a player is nervous, the hands start shaking a wee bit. That’ll just about kill a pllayer like Kuchar. Of course, Hubert Green did ok. But he swung more like Furyk, only with more speed. I do not like Kuchars move at all. It takes away from his natural advantage which is his height.. But hey,…he’s playin’ and I’m not, so there you have it…………………………..Z.

I don’t know about the back implications of the flatter swing – but Kuch was never a huge dirver of the ball. His game was accuracy and putting. The guy is getting a lot out of his game – file it under “there’s more than one way to skin a cat”

COURT

There is indeed more than one way to get’r done. However the last 10 years have been dominated by bombers. Kuch at 6’-3" gives up too much distance and thus his record is not what we all thought it should be. Harmon or just about anybody else would add 30 yards to his tee ball and save his back. He’s a tall player and he’s forcing a flat plane. Looks very unatural. But, he’s making nice bucks, so good for him. If he swung it more like Watney, he’d be a force on Tour cuz his short game is superb………………………Z.

anything is possible – but he wasn’t overly long swinging upright. we DO know that his upright swing just about had him off the Tour. And I never underestimate what Butch can do with a dedicated player.

I think it's good news 3irons

I don’t in any way knock Haney, but it’s clear whatever they were working on wasn’t working out and it’s certainly time for a change, past time actually. Sounds like you’re throwing your resume in for the job…lol Anyway, what I find hysterical is the media going bananas over this; it’s really not that big of a deal, these things happen frequently on the tour. Along with shopping for a new coach, I think perhaps he should take some extended time off; get through the divorce and let his mind and body heal.

When Tiger won at Hoylake in '06

he hardly used the driver that week and won easy. 30 yards behind on the tee shots, he would knock in his 5 iron on the green and putt to victory. He could that week, there was no wind. I wonder if winning that way got him into thinking more about the control game more, like Faldo did 20 years earlier. As I said, Faldo gave up yards for control…when he had the classic reverse C swing, he was told as a young lad by his coach “reach for the sky and watch it fly”, but he could never control the ball in the wind. hence, the flatter, more torso controlled swing. As big as Ernie Els, Faldo was 30 yards behind him with the driver. On putting,Faldo, like Woods up to now, was an awesome putter. But after 35, Faldo’s putting started to wane. He won the Masters at 38 for the last time, but was done on the greens after that. Tiger woods is 35 this year and I have thought for a year now his putting is on the wane. Last year at the PGA he putted poorly by his standards. He is worse this year. Jack right up to 46 when he won his last major and beyond always putted superbly. Tiger won half his majors putting bombs..if this is drying up, then I would put Jack ahead of Tiger in majors at this point. Jack won 4 more after the age of 35 and if Tiger’s putting is on the wane like Faldo’s did at the same age with his health issues as well, I can see Tiger falling short of Jacks record. I never liked Tigers swing, almost a “hit it out of your socks” swing, it can’t be good on the wear and tear on the body. His imploding private life has just about made it impossible. Interesting times.

by Easingwold on May 12, 2010 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

At Hoylake, he hit the driver once and yanked it into the rough – but the guy understands links golf and can play all the run-up shots and knows that links golf isn’t played in the air like American target golf. Remember his win at St Andrews where he only hit into one bunker all week ? Amazing stuff.

Harmon always wanted him to know how to understand and control his game so he could make corrections if something ever went wrong…his driver is a mystery.

You mentioned Faldo…remember Bobby Jones’ advice about links golf…“keep it low.” :-)

You’re definitely right about the “violent” swing Tiger had the first 11 years of his career. That knee snap caused two minor knee surgeries and one major knee surgery – but it was that energy that made him who he was. Kind of like Palmer and his thrashing style.

Interesting that all 3 of Tigers wins in the British Open

were in calm conditions..with little wind. It meant that he didn’t have to hit driver often. When the wind blows here Tiger has to use driver and has at least one bad round, and falls away.

That win at St Andrews wasn’t in a hurricane, but it wasn’t just a fluffy breeze, either. He played great links golf.

Not by Open standards..

it was a nice week ! He did play great though, never in a bunker, and of course his chipping and putting then was second to none. If there is a 30,40 mph wind this year…and often it blows against you going out, then changes on the way back in, I wouldn’t expect Tiger to figure. He just missed out at Birkdale when O’mera won in ’98…that was the only time I remember him doing well in a good links wind.

by Easingwold on May 12, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Did anybody else have the thought go through their head when they heard this that Tiger gave him a choice of resigning or being fired ? That was the first thing that popped into my head.

Have to agree with you guys – this is long overdue.

Personally, I would love it if Tiger went back to Harmon, but with Phil there, I don’t see it happening. Wouldn’t it be funny if he called Peter Kostis ?

I just hope it’s not one of these media pro types…ok…maybe Michael Breed would be fun….

Either an angry retort of a employee that has been let go, or the reason why he dropped Tiger. There are probably alot of wives who don’t want to have their husbands hanging around with Tiger.

Haney

After reading Haney’s well scripted resignation / love letter it sounds like they parted ways on a somewhat mutual basis. Beyond that who knows, but I believe there is more to it than meets the eye.

by progolf on May 11, 2010 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

I agree

It doesn’t look good for Tiger to come out and fire Haney while he is hurt. Hard to blame your swing coach when you’ve been on TV saying the problem is with the injuries.

But if Tiger is going to be shut down for awile, now is a better time for a new coach who can incorporate changes into his rehab.

Between Harmon and Haney, Tiger has probably developed his own opinions and theories on swing mechanics. He is probably believes he knows what is wrong and is looking for someone who is observant and be a sounding board and collaborator for Tiger rather than someone with an ego to “fix” what is wrong with him.

by sports medic on May 11, 2010 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

There's Always Charles Barkley, Hank

Haney won’t be long looking for work. Besides his teaching to the regular people with a lot of money business, other pros have and will seek his services out.

And then there’s Barkley, the Mount-Everest-Not-Using-Oxygen of golf teaching.

by Charles Boyer on May 11, 2010 10:07 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Haney has anything to worry about with work. He has his junior academy in SC, his Golf Channel shows, instructional deals. The guy can take the rest of his life off if he wants.

For Haney

The relationship now has more potential downside than upside. Nows not a bad time to put in a “sell” order on Tiger. Not that Tiger can’t come back, or won’t come back. There is just not enough much additional ROI for continuing the relationship. He has already made you rich and famous. He’s not going to make you that much more richer or that much more fameous.

Ryan is right...if Hank never teaches another day, he is set for life....and

everyone here has good valid points….Maybe Hank’s wife said “step away Dear” before some of the dirt rubs off on you….Does Tiger know his swing? if he doesn’t by now, he never will….and 3irns comes in with the swing plane….Yes, Hogan played with a flatter swing, and as Irons knows, that type swing is all about ball/trajectory control…A pros swing is like an egg shell….fragile….why do they have it one day and not the next? some very subtle differences….more hip bend…reaching a tad more…more/less knee bend, and than that all important mind set….Hogan drank Ginger Ale…wanted to keep his fingers feeling “thin”….With all the speculation of a new coach, isn’t it interesting, that not one mention is made of the big mouth from Canada…..Personally, I think all talk of a new coach is premature….I want to see about the “injury” first….and don’t forget, no mention if Elin is staying or not…way too many variables to this story…..STUB

Saw another intriguing coach idea...

…someone tossed out Lee Trevino on another site. It’s an interesting idea. Trevino has a pedigree Tiger would respect, great understanding of the swing and the game – and if nothing else, he might be able to restore some of the joy Tiger used to have in the game.
