Sandy Lyle Shoots Video for Golf Digest's "How to Break 90" Series

PrintSandy Lyle came down to the Masters this year with every intention of missing the cut. After all, the guy hasn't been relevant in pro golf for some time. The problem with his plan to completely bomb out of the tournament was that the course played so darn easy yesterday, that Lyle practically backed into shooting 69. (Can you imagine how hard it was for Jim Furyk to post +8?)
Fortunately for Lyle, he clearly got some help from tougher conditions on Friday at Augusta National. He met his milestone for the week with complete ineptitude in the second round. At one point in the round, it looked like Lyle was vying to surpass 90 for the round. He ended with 86 - 17 shots worse than yesterday. He ended his 2010 Masters at +11 overall and will miss the cut.
The plus side, though, is that Lyle gave amateurs a great example of how to break ninety. Take a look at his scorecard:
Lyle never made worse than six all day long - and he did that seven times. What a great way for an amateur to learn how to avoid the truly big number than to watch a former major champion do so on a global stage. That's the kind of goodwill that should make him a Ryder Cup captain someday.
What? He was already passed over for the job? For Monty? Damn.

I'm really trying hard to see some
redeeming need for this article…Is Ryan getting caught up in the WGAA whirligig thing and taking to bashing someone? The guy was there and trying…Had a bad hair day….happens to all of us…I would think that class would have dictated to let the sleaze media write about it, but stay out of the Frey…Sorry Ryan, I see no more need for an article like this, than I did on the JD sellathon….jist my HO….STUB

Stub – I’m with you on this one. There is no reason to take shots at a MASTERS CHAMPION. The guy has a green jacket and it doesn’t matter that he shot an 86 and barely plays competitive golf anymore. This “relevence” argument has become a staple for the modern snarky media. It is juvenile at best, and arrogantly superior in intent.
RB – you’re not like this in person. You were taught by your dad better than this. Respect your elders. Respect those who accomplished great things before you were involved.
Saying that Sandy Lyle “backed into a 69” ?? Are you KIDDING ? You walked that golf course the other day. You saw the contours of the fairways, and more importantly the greens. Nobody backs into a 69.
Ok – enough harranging on RB. Had you taken a more respectful look at that scorecard and combined that with your headline premise of breaking 90 – you would have had a terrific piece.
Lyle has five bogies, four double bogies and a triple. He managed one birdie, and the rest were pars – and he managed to break 90. According to some statistics I read a while back, almst 90% of the people who play golf will never break 90. Yet here is Sandy Lyle showing that you can have a miserable day with 10 of 18 holes at bogie or worse – and still break 90.
R E S P E C T – it’s not a dirty word.
Now – if you want a funny piece – how about “should the PGA Tour make Ernie and AK wear slips when wearing these translucent white pants ?” :-)

Did you see Sandy being interviewed
after his 1st round? He was absolutely thrilled and couldn’t wait to get back out. I’m sure he was gutted by his second round score. Looks like one of mine (but on a 100 times simpler course).
Never supported him for RC Captain as I don’t think he has the leadership skills required and is out of touch with the current contenders for the team.
I hadn’t noticed Ernie’s and AK’s translucent pants, Court, (must you peer so closely? ;o)but I do wish the former would wear some more flattering gear instead of the old man get-up.
