Thank The Champions Tour for Fred Couples' Best Ever Masters Round
Watching Fred Couples simply dominate his way around Augusta National today en route to a 66 - his best round ever on this course in more than 20 tries - it was clear what got Couples over the hump. Boom Boom made a slew of putters in that seven to twelve foot range that allowed him to score today. In the past, it has been Couples' putting woes that have held him back from going further than his ball striking could take him.
The reason that Couples is making the putts that he has been may well have to do with how he has been winning on the Champions Tour. In all of his starts on the 50+ junket, Couples has won or finished in second. He hasn't posted a round worse than 68, and his worst three round total has been -17. Those numbers are indicative of a guy performing very well on a tour often referenced as a putting contest.
(In fact, Couples has been playing so well, the Champions Tour website doesn't even have him listed as an active player.)
The funny thing is that Johnny Miller - who I hate to reference - used to refer to this major championship as the Augusta National Annual Spring Putting Contest. The combo of putting and wedge play is what makes Masters champions. It is also what makes Champions Tour players dominant. The skills transfer directly over to the Masters and, with Couples' youthful length, there is not much of a distance curve for him.

Was a good first day
The weather wasn’t as bad as predicted and didn’t last long, then again I spent most of it inside. LOL I’m freakin tired.. Good on Freddy and Tom and David Toms and the rest. I told Sven and Gloria , from the the Patridge Inn, www.patridgeinn.com that I would put a shameless plug in for them tonight. Thanks for making my life and my clients life easier this week :o) I.m pooped. Cya

Someday, one of these beloved old guys are actually going to hold on to win a major instead of just teasing us all the way.
That will be a good day. And if anyone’s gonna do it, it’ll be Couples. Particularly if the temperatures pick up and the greens dry out and this really becomes a finesse contest.

150-1
Hope y’all took Ryan’s info and put some $$$ down on Freddie. I Best I could find was 100-1 and I took it for a Benjamin. Anybody that was -77 under through 4 Champions events can play . Watson and Freddie are no surprises,……not yet. We’ll see what happens when the Green Jackets start pumpin’ Augusta with the full “steroid” dosage. lol . Woods looked descent, got 3/4 goods breaks and took advantage. Better than expected by most onlookers. ………………………..Z.
you're still away,...choke on it !
No... I didn't
I admit, Freddie’s 1st round almost put egg on my face. But now he’s shot 75, I’m not surprised. When Freddie expects, his putter fails..he can’t do it with the young ones now.
Freddie
EZ,…he didn’t play his way out if it,……yet. Tomorrow will be the big test………….Z.
