In his Wednesday practice round, David Duval (and playing partner Steve Marino) tried their best to skip a ball across the pond guarding Augusta National's 16th green.

They do that INTENTIONALLY???? Gawd, I do everything I can to avoid skipping the ball along the pond until it runs out of steam and sinks. Next time I’ll just say I’m imitating Steve Marino.
Placebos, of course, are things you have to swallow even though they contain nothing that actually helps you. It's like American health insurance in a pill. -BiPM
Two memories of 16......
2004 watching the Tuesday practice round and we had been at 16 enjoying the “skipping” tradition when Craig Stadler came up. He hit a couple that didn’t make it and the crowd was razzing him pretty good, so he threw down another ball and tried again…..didn’t make it and he acted like he was mad and threw his club down, but it hit funny and went into the water…..man was he embarrassed. His caddy went into the water and looked for it for a few minutes, but never found it. I have pictures. 2009 it was real cold and we were at 16 watching and trying to stay warm and VJ skipped it across the water, up onto the green and into the cup……the roar was like a Sunday eagle on 15…..pretty neat stuff.
The Saints ARE the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS....WHO DAT!
CG..did you ever do that?
I tried it one time and actually got 3 skips, jumped the bank, but than ran out of steam and rolled back into the water…The group I was with, had had muuucccooo libations on a really hot August afternoon…Needless to say, each of us was rolling on the grass as all tried and fell back…boy, the idiotic things drunks do….STUB
Never on purpose :-)
But yes – I’ve skipped a ball across a lake a few times.
Best one I’ve ever seen was during a scramble tournament where we had to use everybody’s tee shot 3 times. The worst guy in our group had only managed two useable tee shots all day and we didn’t realize it until…you guessed it…18…across water. We didn’t even take out clubs – just tried to pump him up…just one 170 yard driver was all we needed. He ripped it about 100 yards straight out and it started skipping. Five or six skips later, it hopped up on the bank. Made par – won the tournament – and we gave him the MVP award.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Duval's downfall from his best playing days
is to me one of the most under-rated stories in Golf the last 10 years
He could have been great if he hadn’t had the issues he did
