Monty Watch: Turn Down that Disco Racket, Whipper Snapper!

With the Ryder Cup fast approaching, we here at Waggle Room are excited to introduce our new Monty Watch - a segment devoted to poking fun at Colin Montgomerie.  Why?  Because he's the opposing Ryder Cup captain and, as you'll see in the coming months, these posts just kind of write themselves.

At last week's Spanish Open on the European Tour, Monty was on his way to a mediocre finish at the last hole of round one.  He approached the green and, while putting, heard some of that crazy techno (or as Reuters says, "disco") music that the kids like.  ::Beat boxes techno noises::

Monty - clearly never having heard of Party in the UK - was distracted and upset by the music so much so that he three-jacked the last to card 71.

Afterward, he steamed by saying, "Is this a ****ing party or a golf tournament?"

Why can't it be both?

The guy is just setting himself up when he does things like this.  Sure, the music was probably inappropriate, but it's Spain!  People don't even eat dinner there til 10pm!  It's a crazy party!  Monty should've just done his best Rich Beem and enjoyed the show.

Monty is just being Monty

Ya gotta luv him. Can’t blame him for complaining though. Reminds me of Rodney Dangerfield in Caddy Shack blairing his boom box while judge Smails was hitting. LOL

Oh dear - I'm a bit of a mini-Monty

When I’m playing golf with my usual partners, they say I am tyrannical about them talking/moving when I’m about to play (often get one of those birthday cards with the golfer shouting “shush” at a butterfly). Now I’m playing golf with various new people once a week and having to grit my teeth/keep my mouth firmly closed as they talk loudly on my tee-shot, stand directly behind me, move nonchalently around the green, etc. All I can do is glare at their shoes and think uncharitable thoughts. Do you think this is good for my soul?

I'd suggest, Wendy, that you first complete searching

for your soul before caring what’s good for it. First things first.

Are they new to the game Wendy ?

if so, it’s your duty to enlighten them in your own charming way ( whatever that is :) )

No, Easing, they're definitely not new to the game

I’ve seen them around for years. It’s difficult when you’re invited to join an established two-three ball group to say anything. I did ask one of the chaps to mark his ball, as it was about 2ft. directly behind the hole on my line, and was told “WE don’t usually bother”. He did so reluctantly on this occasion, but none of them did so thereafter. I don’t want to cause any bad feeling, as they’re really friendly and always wave to me when we meet on the course.

If it was a competition, I would definitely ask politely but under these circumstances I think I’ll have to put up with it. None of these things seems to bother anyone else in the group after all.

Sometimes some of the old chaps don't take the game that seriously

but in that case he was being ignorant to say the least. I’d suggest next time the situation is reversed, don’t mark yours and see if your ball puts him off. In a comp. insist.

Wendy darlin

I got yur solution….do a Sergio on the guys coin….next time I bet he moves it….sometimes it takes bold behaviour to get something done….If that doesn’t work, you might try planting your dainty shoe in his behind….STUB

As I'm sure you're aware by now

I’m not backward in coming forward if a player/group behind me behave in this way. A smile and a finger to the lips usually works OK. Bit different/more difficult when invited to join the group in front, however.
