Get A Look at the New Road Hole - Now, With More Road
As we first told you last October, the R&A had been plotting a forty yard extension of the hole by creating a new teeing ground across the hole's actual road namesake. At a press briefing today at St. Andrews, Royal & Ancient chief Peter Dawson officially unveiled the new Road Hole at the Old Course.
And here she is.
To put the two tee boxes into context, here's a satellite view from Google Maps.
The new tee, across the road, has been created in an effort to (a) force more players to hit driver off of the tee and (b) require a longer iron shot into the green, thus trying to make the deep pot bunker guarding the green and the actual road behind it more likely to come into play.
Dawson described the diminishing challenge by saying, "We don't see many players on the road these days, and that's because of the distance control they can achieve and the accuracy with these shorter iron clubs. What we're trying to do here is restore the hole to its previous challenge where the players are having to hit into the green with a much longer iron club than they have been in recent times."
The R&A head man said that they consulted several players' opinions when batting around the idea of the change, and that they were supportive.
"[W]e did consult with some players at the Dunhill last year about it and received support. I'm not going to name them because I don't think that's fair, but we weren't quite daft enough just to go and do it without asking some opinions."
To say it wouldn't be fair to share names that supported the lengthening of one of the greatest holes in the five century history of the sport is like revealing names from the Witness Protection Program. One name that did come out in support of the change, though, is five-time champion Tom Watson.
In an interview days after the announcement to lengthen the hole, Watson told Waggle Room exclusively, "The R&A is doing the right thing by lengthening their golf courses."
More specifically, Watson added, "The Road Hole isn't going to make much of a difference to me because I always make bogey on that son of a gun anyway."

There are only a few things I’m not real thrilled with on the change. I really like that they brought the driver back into play…
…however…the new tee box takes tee shots over the top of a part of 16 green, not good…
…They did bring the hotel back into play, but not just the 2 story section that used to be there. Some of these guys, like a John Daly, might not go right of the hotel…or left of the hotel…but straight OVER the hotel…with a little draw. :-)
…And they’re making players cross over that highway. Don’t they have enough problems with traffic than to close down a major thoroughfare just for a golf tournament ? ;-D

Sometimes, I’ll do some actual golf stuff here :) I do care about course architecture, but there’s not a lot of it that goes on these days.

Golf-related's okay now and then,
but don’t forget your goof-related crowd.
The way the box is laid out, it appears to have players’ minds aimed right over the tallest part of the hotel (like you said). Like, really? I know they’re trying to promote a raw drive over the whole damn property – or bail out left – but Jesus.

That’s not the best picture of the new layout – but you’re partially right – the tee is now far enough back that some of the biggest bombers with really high ball flight could possibly take a rip straight over the hotel – but most guys will still be aiming at the “O” in Hotel like always.

I've been at work for 12 hours, lol
I’ve played the Old course twice. I was lucky enough to hit good drives both times…1st wind was in my face, it left me a 3 wood to the green. 2nd time with was behind off the left, it left me a 5 iron punch. We were just 10 yards from the Championship tee and I agree with the changes. Pros hitting 3 woods on this hole removed some of the fear …even though the approach is a harder shot than the drive. Court is right, the aim will remain the same…anyone trying to go over the hotel could find themselves in the Jigger Inn, lol. No, they will hit a fade with the driver over the “O”…anything else is far too risky.
I should add I was in my 40's and Pros hit thier 3 woods much father than I hit my driver.
(about 250 on a good day)
easing
could you please pass me a “jigger” of something. I’ve had a rough day. ;o)
