Claustrophobes Need Not Apply to Cover Tiger's Monday Presser
As you've probably heard by now, Tiger Woods is having a press conference at 2pm on Monday at the Masters. That interview is going to take place in the appropriately-titled interview room. The only problem with the room? It's small. Really, really small. Like, if they crammed everyone who was credentialed in that room, the Fire Marshall would stop by and kick people out before anyone associated with Tiger could.
This '06 pic kind of shows how small the room is. [David Gannon/Getty Images]
Provided the universal interest of the media in capturing what is sure to be a total letdown of a press conference (just like every other Tiger Woods press conference in history), there was some hope that Augusta National might relocate the conference to the media auditorium. All credentialed media have an assigned seat in the auditorium and, therefore, could attend the press conference were it to be held there. That's not to be the case.
Augusta National has instead suggested that each outlet submit the name of one credentialed reporter to cover the presser. Then Augusta National will determine who among the Submitted gets to cover the event in the interview room. Others get to watch the thing outside. Or they could just watch on their computer, like I will, since it's basically the same thing at that point.
The Masters is intended to be an intimate experience for everyone involved - from players to patrons to press. (Like that alliteration?) That's why the room is small and has never been expanded. The media room, though, has been expanded to be much more accommodating, going from what looks like an old airplane hangar in the 70s to the stadium-style media center today.
Frankly, I'd rather walk the golf course than listen to a Tiger presser. Here's are some phrases that you're sure to hear: "strip away denial," "I already answered that," "feeling good about my game," "I always like playing with Freddy," "it's in the police report," "that's between Elin and I", and "I cannot speak about Anthony Galea as there is an ongoing federal investigation."
On second thought, I'll just go play Chatroulette Bingo.

“Media Auditorium” ??? It’s the media tent – and it isn’t set up or wired for press conferences. It is set up with tables and dividers so accredited members of the press can sit and do their work…or more correctly…sit around eating and drinking and NOT go out on the golf course to do their jobs.
ANGC is not going to let this become a circus – which is what the media wants so they can write idiotic stories about how the club can’t keep control.
Leave it to the media to NEVER be satisfied. Buncha whiners.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
It’s not a tent. And a lot of stuff happens in media centers that does pertain to a tournament.
But, I understand why AN doesn’t want this to become nutso.

It's all about self centered tiger.
His own staged press conference a day early.
Everyone else is Tuesday.
Limited hand picked credentialed press. (one from each agency) but not every agency is getting in due to the small size of the room. I think Fergy was the first one chosen “go figure”
There is a limit on “WHAT” questions can be asked or not asked.
I’m told there probably won’t be any listening allowed from the outside of the curtains either.
Good Lawwdy, we already had two tournaments upstaged with the scripted, “I’m sorry” and the pre-planned question interviews.
Whats next ? They don’t allow anyone to follow his group around ? I’m so sick of all of it and I think many others out there are as well.

True Wendy
But those circumstances / events where very different. I’m surprised he isn’t asking for his own locker room. { :o)
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
This circumstance is different also.
Monday seems like a good idea. Get it out of the way, have a normal Tuesday. Par 3 on Wednesday, then the tourney on Thursday. If Woods talked on Tuesday people would whine that he is upstaging this, or that. He can’t please people who are looking for reasons to be against him, so he’ll just move on, and people will say this and that anyway. Oh well. If it was a truly open press conference where would it be held? The Georgia Dome? People will say i don’t care if he plays or not, but his galleries will be loaded, and the press will be hounding him. Ratings will be higher than normal, and interest will be very high. Some will be for, and some against, but again. Tiger makes Golf relevant. Phil and the rest of the players can’t do that. There are no rivals, no challengers, nothing. There is Tiger Woods, the grand canyon, then the rest of the Tour. Been that way since ’96.
