Tom Watson Given Special Exemption Into US Open at Pebble Beach
This morning, the USGA announced that it would be giving Tom Watson a special exemption into the 2010 US Open at Pebble Beach.
"I am deeply grateful to the USGA for extending me the invitation to play in the U.S. Open at one of my favorite golf courses in the world, Pebble Beach Golf Links," said Watson in a release. "Some of my life’s favorite times have been spent near Stillwater Cove. I know there will be more this coming June."
Watson is now assured to be the only player to play in all five US Opens at Pebble. The Open has been held there previously in 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2000.
Mike Davis told the AP in February that they would look at exemptions in April. After Watson's finish at the Masters, he was assured the exemption.

Talk about giving great PR
to an event….wow, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy….I can’t wait for it to begin…I bet 3irns will be there with bells and whistles on….well, maybe not, cause they wouldn’t let him on the grounds that way, but he knows what I mean….STUB
That’s great – and it’s extra good knowing that he’s earned it with his play – not just being asked along as a hood ornament.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Yeah, I think Watson was (in part) playing to get into the US Open.

Glad to hear it
I’m really happy to see how well Watson has done at The Open and at the Masters, but I fear that he might not be able to do as well in the U.S. Open. It’s tough to deal with the ridiculous rough and with not having as much distance as he used to going into greens that might be hard and fast.
Though, there are a couple of things going in his favor because Pebble doesn’t seem to play as difficult as other U.S. Open venues. That, plus the June weather there doesn’t seem to be as hot as it gets when the U.S. Open is in other parts of the country (if I recall, Tulsa was really hot for the U.S. Open), which would obviously lend itself to being much more fatigued as the tournament wears on.
I hope he does well, though. He’s been surprising me for a while and I hope he continues to do so.
The Monterey peninsula tends to be foggy in the morning and windy in the afternoon in June. Heat won’t be a problem.
Placebos, of course, are things you have to swallow even though they contain nothing that actually helps you. It's like American health insurance in a pill. -BiPM
That's good
If the rough doesn’t give him too much trouble, he should be able to do well. I’d love to keep seeing his name near the top of the leaderboard for a while longer.
