Reviewing the Famous Food of Augusta National

26916_383931312020_108792762020_4286411_1918637_n_medium

When I realized that I was going to be attending the Masters this year, I knew that I was going to get a chance to sample the legendary sandwiches that the tournament offers for Hot Tub Time Machine prices.  With one day - and, really, one meal - to devour everything that I can, I was going to make it count.

After wearing myself out by walking the whole course, it was time to grab some grub.  (That's probably not the right phrase in the Augusta lexicon.  They're called snacks there.)  Each writer that I asked about the food told me a different favorite, so I decided to go for each of their favorites.  I walked through a beautiful covered pavilion and grabbed a pimento & cheese, egg salad, and chicken sandwich.

It sounds kind of gluttonous, but the portions are normal sized unlike the unnecessary amounts of food served all over the country today.  The three sandwiches plus a soda cost me $8.  Yeah, $8. Unreal value because there really is little to be earned by the club in overcharging for food.

I sat down to enjoy the sandwiches.  Order was tough to decide.  Ultimately, I went in this order: egg salad, chicken sandwich, and pimento & cheese.

All three were great.

The egg salad is a basic sandwich - bread plus a simple egg salad that is not too dry, and not too runny.  It's seasoned just right and goes down quickly.  The chicken sandwich was served on a soft roll.  The meat was served cold, but by design.  Imagine a Chick-Fil-A sandwich, but served cold and without a pickle.  Since I love cold cooked poultry, it went quickly - like cold pizza.  The real winner, though, was the pimento & cheese.  In a lot of ways, it could have just as easily been a Cheese Whiz sandwich were it not for the pimentos, except it was really nice Whiz.  The pimentos add a flavor to the sandwich that is just so rare for a Yankee like myself that it took the cake the Masters chocolate chip cookie I ate.

Love the egg salad...

…but the BEST thing about eating at Augusta National during The Masters is that you don’t have to max out your credit cards or take out a second mortgage on the house to pay for a sammich and a beverage.

I had no idea about the prices when I went in '04

and I remember spending about 5x more time eating/drinking then I had originally planned due to the low prices
