Deal for PGA Tour Event in Japan May Be Struck at Augusta
In each of the last two seasons, the PGA Tour has expanded the anterior of its schedule by tacking on an Asian-based event. Last year, the HSBC Champions was converted into a pseudo-official World Golf Championships event. This October, a co-sponsored PGA Tour event in Malaysia sets sail. Now talk comes that the PGA Tour is seeking to create an official event in Japan.
Shigemi Sato of AFP has a story on the growing interest of the PGA Tour to plant a flag in Japan, including on a meeting between Tim Finchem and Japan Golf Tour Organisation chairman Tadashi Koizumi at the Masters. (I'll try to find it.)
The JGTO's equivalent of Ty Votaw, Hiroshi Yamanaka, told AFP, "The United States seems to be looking at the Japanese (men's) tour as a completely untapped tour which has not tied up with Europe either."
Japan is one frontier with no Caucasian male stake in the ground. While both the PGA and European Tours have been busy tapping the rapidly developing Chinese golf culture, they have neglected a mature yet resurgent Japanese golf talent pool.
What would Japan want in return? To host the 2015 Presidents Cup, which it has never held. Since I'm going to use all of my frequent flyer miles to go to the 2011 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne for $0, I'll have four years to save up enough miles to go to Japan.

I was going to pretend that this all made senes to me…but it doesn’t.
I have no idea what Yamanaka was talking about with the PGA Tour looking at the Japan Tour as “untapped”. The PGA Tour barnstorming season can capitalize on Ryo Ishikawa and add another week for the PGA Tour guys to play in the east and not complain that it’s not worth it to them to just fly to China for a week. The best PGA Tour golfers will have a chance to be seen…and make a few yen…in front of a very golf crazy audience.
RB – what does “…no caucasian male stake in the ground” mean ? You’re not thinking that there are no non-Japanese/Asian golfers playing on the Japanese Tour, are you ?
Pres Cup in Japan sounds interesting…except that it will be on in the middle of the night here in the States.

I mean no stake in the ground on a pro event there. There are plenty of white dudes who play the Japan Tour.

A few countries that make up the International team watch the match
in the middle of the night, Court…when it is in the States. It’s a good idea to take it to Japan.
Don’t get me wrong – I hope they do play in Japan – on a course with some great views of the country and Mt Fuji. Time was the only problem I saw with it – and that’s purely selfish on my part.
