Honda Classic Ratings Flat With '09, 2nd Smallest '10 Audience

Camilo Villegas doesn't particularly move the meter, at least according to Nielsen.

Sports Business Daily reports that the Honda Classic final round overnight rating was flat against 2009, but down 25% from 2008.  This final round was the second lowest watched final round of the year.

The only worse final round?  The WGC Accenture Match Play final.  Would anyone care to listen again to my suggestion that the match play final should be on Superbowl Sunday?

Whatever….and…no thanks…but it wasn’t a bad idea except that the PGA Tour would have to rearrange that part of the schedule every year.

This is true. But I kind of liked the reworked schedule this year.

I’m with you there – but the Superbowl won’t be the same weekend every year.

Last weekend much of the country, that hadn’t seen sunshine in a month or so, experienced relatively warm temperatures. My local driving range had a waiting line running to three deep and there were people on the course for the first time in months. My speculation is that folks who would normally watch golf were too busy playing.

Placebos, of course, are things you have to swallow even though they contain nothing that actually helps you. It's like American health insurance in a pill. -BiPM

Good point Diane.....

Our course was packed Friday and all week-end, which brings us back to the slow play discussion. Our club is in the process of buying a taser and a previously owned “waterboarding” apparatus….we already have plenty of guns…..lol

Really?

I was at the Honda Classic Friday for the Fireworks and Concert and Sunday for the last round and it was a great crowd. In fact I read a couple of articles and they said that The Honda Classic exceeded their previous attendance of 100k for the weeks festivities.

Even with a chilly forecast which they obviously can’t control the Honda Classic came through!

he’s talking TV numbers…which nobody outside of the network offices and commercial sponsors really care about.

Honda set attendance records,...

and no EL-DICK in the field ! Guess that speaks volumes. Woods never plays the Honda anyway, as it’s tooooo much course for his “aerosol” tee ball. Doesn’t appear that anybody missed him at all, given the attendance numbers………………….Z.

Actually the truth is, (if you’re interested) that Tiger still has many fans and they do indeed miss him. I miss him. Yes of course the sport is alive and well and it always will be with or without TW. But to imply that “nobody” misses TW is utterly and completely false.

Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth.

He's lost a considerable percentage of his fan base,...

I believe I read only 39% of supporters are still behind Tiger. His sponsors have dropped to a much lower percentage. My point is that the Honda set an attendance record, and the 100,000 plus fans didn’t seem to miss EL-DICK. We had over 300,000 at PHX Open, and you didn’t see any Woods signage or posters or Woods souvenirs. You may miss his sorry a$$, but out at Tour venues, he’s not even mentioned. People are supporting the Tour in-spite of his exile. The appearance is one of business as usual. The media morons miss him for sure, but we’re still having great golf without his “circus of distractions”,…also know as his unruly fan base. I certainly do not miss any of that chaos. Alas it may be short lived, as I suspect Woods will announce his marriage is now saved, and he’s a changed man after a few weeks in re-hab. Same ole Tiger,….as phony as a $3 dollar bill. Bay Hill seems to be the obvious choice. I’m sure it will be a frosty reception. Better there than face the Green Jackets at Augusta first time back. Somehow I don’t think we’ll be seeing fist pumps or club twirls out of Mr.Woods, for quite sometime. ……………………………..Z.

funny – nobody called me to see if I was still behind Tiger. Those “polls” are ridiculous at best. Miss him or not, 3 – call him names and cuss him up and down all you want – but to deny that the guy is the centerpiece of professional golf is turning a blind eye to the facts.

I hear ya Court

For better or worse, Woods is indeed the centerpiece of professional golf. Now, if only he’d act like a professional, I could cut him considerable slack. He is/was a great player, but there’s more to being a pro than just hitting the ball. See : “Arnold Palmer” for clarification………………………………………Z.

The arrogance and attitude

was part of Tigers game that carried him to the top. I can’t see a new “humble” Tiger doing as well. Trying to be like Jack off the course just isn’t in his makeup. He would have to be withdrawn inside and that would hold him back. For that reason, I don’t think the Tiger we saw at his recent press conference is the real Tiger at all. He is what he is.

I have no comment

As I am sick of talking about the topic and am enjoying the tour as it was meant to be. I was at the Honda last week and it was packed. I spoke to many a player, caddie, golf insider and golf fan and the majority are enjoying this tour season just the way it is. Its only the golf media hacks looking for a story, that are drooling all over themselves waiting to print story lines that they have already been written. If anyone else is going to be at Doral this week, let me know and I will try to meet up with ya. No promises as I am working all 4 days. I can be reached at sandcastle42@hotmail.com

Do you get to spend the whole week at the tournaments, or do you just have to be there the day before it starts ?

Depends court

It’s my choice. Sometimes I get there a day or two early to make hotel accomodation or PR related changes and I may stay a day later for a charity related dinner. I’m on the road enough from March through October, so most of the time I only do the above if I have to. The Masters and US Open, I’m usualy around for the whole week.

What kind of groups does your company take care of ? Are these corporate sponsors ? Or travel groups who want to go to the tournaments ?

It can be fun at times , but also very taxing. I carry three cell phones and look and feel like “Yosemitee Sam” at times. It’s a living. LOL
