xxx Golf Channel is copying the wrong sports network

I'm sure that just about all of us have recognized how much xxx Golf Channel "borrows" from ESPN.  Golf Channel versions of ESPN's Pardon the Interruption (PTI), Outside the Lines, and The Sports Reporters are more than a little obvious copies....even to a casual viewer.

Just on the surface, one might wonder how a Golf Channel copy of some fairly successful shows would be a bad thing, but I'm going to give it a go.

Over the years, ESPN talking heads have gotten more and more negative in the way they view the players, teams, and games they cover.  The positive view of sports has been taken over by a superior attitude that prefers to point a finger of blame when a team loses or a player makes a mistake.  Plays are broken down as if they occur in a vacuum, or the entire game is in the balance during this one play.  Nothing is ever good enough - and no team should ever lose.

It's bad enough that the guys who never played the games take this attitude, but over the years, the guys who actually did strap on the gear have gotten the same way...sort of like golf's own Johnny Miller.

I don't mind seeing a play broken down to point out how or where things went wrong, but the attitude of so many takling heads comes across that the player did it on purpose. (sort of like Brandel Chamblee's determination that there was "no reason for" Ernie Els' pull hook into the water at 15.  Gee Brandel - are you SURE he didn't just feel like dunking his ball in the lake ?)

The arrogance and negativity from these "experts" drives me nuts...and xxx Golf Channel has follwed ESPN like a puppy.

Enough of those guys - I'm thinking there is a better role model for xxx Golf Channel to follow...since it seems that they aren't interested in taking the lead on anything.  They're already going back to the John Daly "reality" show well.

The better example in sports broadcasting, in my opinion, is the MLB Network.  That's right - the baseball network.  If you haven't tuned in, these guys have gone out to find a handful of former players and put them on shows with upbeat media types who actuall ENJOY the game.

I know - it's a groundbreaking idea, isn't it.

Tune in some night.  You'll find positive discussion on teams and players from the eyes of players.  What is good - what is lacking - what are they working on - can they get better - can they contend...and on and on and on.  Add to that some great demonstrations on how the game is played, and drills that the pros work on.   Names like Sean Casey, Barry Larkin, Al Leiter, Harold Reynolds, Jim Kaat all chime in.  Then they add the journalist - Bob Costas, Tom Verducci, Peter Gammons....  They add up to fast paced, exciting, excited, and yes, FUN conversation on the game of baseball.

You can't tell me that xxx Golf Channel can't get rid of some of their dead weight and find some former players, or maybe a caddy, who are excited to talk about golf, but don't sound like they are a high school freshman asking out his first date.  I like Frank Nobilo, but his delivery is more of a lullaby than a wake-up call.  Put the Steve Sands and Todd Lewis in as anchors, since they decided that their best host, Vince Cellini, wasn't worth keeping around.  Add Michal Breed, tell him he doesn't have to yell all the time, but if you need a caffeine boost, he's your man.  Keep Faldo on speed dial - give the man a chance to pick up the pace a little - we've seen him do it.

Lose the Tilghman's and Walkers and Feinstein's, and Micellii's and definitely Hawkins'.  You don't even need RIch Lerner...which sort of goes without saying.

Get active players on....spice it up and have their caddy with them.  Do some demonstrations of what went right or wrong on some shots - show how the pros do it on the course and in practice.  Show us that the players really AREN'T a bunch of psychobabble trained autobots who don't enjoy the game anymore.  Laugh a little - it won't kill you.

There has to be a better way than these incredibly boring and negative shows we see day in and day out.  Come on guys - MLB network is on Comcast - I know you can find it on your box...it's even in HD !

I enjoyed your comments even though I don’t have the GC. And from the sounds of it maybe it’s not such a bad thing. :-)

I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.

Common Red...

it’s almost heresy not to have the GC…how in the world do you do fantasy golf if you don’t get the recommendations of the simplistic babblers? Man, I can’t believe this…I think your putting us on….Whew, there for a minute I believed you….STUB

It's a true story...

I have yet to invest in a sattelite dish or expanded cable…so I am sans Golf Channel. My phone package ends in June so I may change and do one of those combo packages and finally get a dish! :)

the thing about GC

I have it, but I only watch actual golf that I’m interested in, which means primarily LPGA. I watch Big Break because I find it entertaining.

That brings up a point. CG, if you don’t like the programming on Golf Channel, WHY THE HELL DO YOU WATCH? A good working definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result each time.

Placebos, of course, are things you have to swallow even though they contain nothing that actually helps you. It's like American health insurance in a pill. -BiPM

geez - someone took their snarky pill today. ;-)

so it’s a bad thing to want a network like xxx Golf Channel to be worth watching ? I didn’t say that I watch all the time, but when I watch, then switch over to something like the MLB network, the differences are huge.

the tournament broadcasts leave a lot to be desired, too.

court, please don't get me started

on the Golf Channel. And, dianemarie, a very bad golf channel is better than no golf channel at all. But, court and I must be insane also…

You and I have the virtually the same names leaving and staying. I did a poll of TV golf announcers and the Golf Channel crew, as a whole, were detested and had a less than 50% approval rating. Most other networks were in the high ’60’s and low ’70’s

I'll keep an eye out for you...at www.oneeyedgolfer.blogspot.com

TGC sux !

Except for Wynn McMurry and Lauren Thompson. Talk about a couple of Tiger Woods poster girls, lol. Only problem is that both these beautys earn 6 figures a year and somehow I doubt the tramps down at IHOP pull in that much. No wonder Mickelson opted out of buying the Corp. LMAO. Seriously, those gals are all TGC has going for it, along with Alex Micieli. ………………….Z.

you're still away,...choke on it !

It’s better than the alternative – which is nothing at all.

I agree , better than nothing

But that dumb dumb Lerner needs go the way of Sansabelts. OMG, I crack up everytime I see him heading toward the range at the events and players do what they can to avoid him. hahahahaha I’m not kidding. lololol

Fortunately in Singapore, we only get the golf and not always the US commentary. As a result we don’t get a whole lot of Richie Rich. Another good reason to live in Asia!

Last Night

The Grey Goose 19th hole on TGC was the worst broadcast and biggest joke for a show I have seen to date. Kahns is the biggest checklehead of all. There was barely a mention of this weeks tournament at Doral and zero mention of LPGA upcoming events or the European tour. Sixty five percent of the show was focused on speculative groveling and drooling about TW. A poor excuse for a channel that is suppose to promote our sport as a whole.

Court I saw your friend BK from XM Radio on the tube as well.

I had the same thoughts...

I called him after the first half hour and asked him if it was too late to have them pull his segment from the show. That was a complete embarrassment for the network…or at least most people at any other network would think so.

Ripping off “Match Game” and “Family Feud” – just embarrassing.

BK was down at Doral staring at a camera. He didn’t have a monitor to see what those “chuckleheads” (great word, by the way) were doing, so he was on an island with no way to join in the conversation…using the term lightly.

OMG court

That Game show routine was “PATHETIC” John Hawkins is a joke also. TGC spent all kinds of money on a new studio and very little on “on-air talent” or producers. With the acception of Charlie Rymer (maybe) those idiots belong hosting the family fued. Kahn’s asks pre-scripted questions and I swear the answers are also pre-scripted and rehearsed. It’s all very transparent and a big disapointment for GOLF in general.

They do know all the questions and situations ahead of time. I was amazed that Hawkins had all his papers in hand to read from or check his notes.

I wish TGC was a giant Etch-A-Sketch board

So they could shake it and start over.
