Long Time Tour Pro JL Lewis' Website Recounts A Double Eagle That Never Happened, Then Corrects It
Long time PGA Tour journeyman JL Lewis has been very active on the interwebs - starting a Twitter account, a Facebook page, and a blog that he links to consistently (just like I would). In a recent blog post, Lewis recounts quite a story from the Waste Management Open.
The scoring at TPC Scottsdale is usually low and the course plays fast with hard greens. The 17th hole is a drivable par four that offers the opportunities for a score of two. I was playing the last round with Scott Verplank one year and we both holed out for a double eagle on 17. I finished in the top ten and remember that moment as much as any of the 13 hole-in-ones I have made over the years.
That's an interesting story, but the most critical parts of the story are totally false. Lewis has never finished in the top ten in Phoenix. In fact, he has never finished inside the top 40. The only player ever to have made a one on a par four was Andrew Magee, who did so in 2001 at TPC Scottsdale.
The only plausible explanation for this is that Lewis was confused that a two is an eagle at 17 and not a double eagle. Then again, he knows that 17 is a par four. So an ace is a double eagle. A two is an eagle. Which is it?
I've heard of fish tales. I've even heard some golf tales. But with the advent of the interweb, it's kind of hard to get something like this that wrong.
Update 9:11 am 3/29/10: Well, JL Lewis' wife provided an explanation to Waggle Room in an email.
"This article was transcribed incorrectly from J.L.’s handwritten notes. J.L. holed out for an eagle in the final round of the Phoenix Open in 1999. A two on a par 4 is an eagle not a double eagle. He did not finish in the top 10. J.L.’s notes said he was + 10 coming in – actually meaning he was 10 over par through his 14th hole of his round that day. Our apologies for misreading J.L.’s notes and getting this so wrong.
We will correct the article. Thank you for setting the record straight. In all fairness, J.L. didn’t lie, it was an honest mistake by his editor."
And there you have it. It's like when Jerry Seinfeld wrote down a joke in the middle of the night on paper but spent a week trying to figure out what he actually wrote. Then it turned out not to be funny once he realized what it was.
Or, to work in a Simpsons reference, when Homer is tempted by sultry co-worker Mindy Simmons, so much so that he writes a speech on his hand to tell her that he cannot cheat on Marge with her. But Homer gets so nervous that the sweat in his palms ruins the speech into illegible garble.

Another good reason why Twitter is a bad idea for public figures. If you make a mistake, there is no delete button, you can’t take it back, and someone somewhere is going to make a federal case out of it.

May I edit your comment, CG?
I’d leave it at…

UAHuntsville.
Alternatively...
I think you just misinterpreted his comment. It’s possible that by a double eagle Lewis just meant that both he and Verplank had (ordinary) eagles. And isn’t 3-under par called an albatross?
Someone raised that on Twitter. You can call -3 on a hole a “double eagle” or an “albatross,” both are ok.

Maybe he meant he finished in the top ten for the first round? Or in the final round was one of the first 10 people to complete their round since I'm sure he had an early tee time?
Here's what it says now...
from the link you provided to his blog site…

I was playing the last round with Scott Verplank one year and we both holed out from off the green. I was ten over par for the tournament coming into hole number 14 and remember that eagle as much as any of the 13 hole-in-ones I have made over the years.

Mistake Corrected
Thank you for bringing this mistake to our attention. The blog post was transcribed incorrectly from J.L.’s handwritten notes and has now been corrected.

Seems SOMEbody owes JL an apology for calling him a “liar”. (wink wink)

LOL
Ryan hasn’t learned. You can change the content in your original post but can’t change the URL.

I learned long ago as a blogger when you report something that’s totally wrong, you don’t delete it. You do this instead. The exception to that is fixing typos and stuff like that.

Actually, I know the URL doesn’t change. Bill, it’s funny how you think I’m some idiot when it comes to technology since I work with it every day at my job. I know what happens.
Use of the strikethrough actually looks really bad in terms of cleanliness and readability. In almost all Internet circles, it’s used for an aside remark or sarcastic joke.

Semantics Alert!
The new current title of this article seems to be off…according to the response above, and your update, it appears that JL did not “misremember” the event – it was written incorrectly when interpreted by someone else posting it to his web site…his notes correctly represent what happened.
I do have to admit the orignal title, accusing JL of lying, bothered me. Did you email them asking for clarification or did they email you after finding your post?
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
Misremember is a play on Roger Clemens presenting facts that wound up not being true or factually accurate.
If you’re going to put something like that out on the internet, it is important to double check that information. In this case, JL’s editor should have made sure that what they understood to be true actually was. You guys would tear me up if I were to do something like that. Bill routinely does but has no qualms about it.
To answer your question, JL’s people emailed me after reading the post.

Thanks for the clarification...
I’m not a baseball person, although I do hope to get to the new Twins field this summer, so I didn’t have a clue on the Clemens connection.
I realize you have every right to post these errors, and you are exactly right that web site folks need to fact check and assure readers we are getting accurate information. What would have impressed me is if you would have wanted to follow up with them, in the spirit of sharing accurate information (because I do believe you strive for that here), rather than “exposing” them for the sake of doing it. It sort of felt TMZ-like. You’re so much better than that.

Just to be clear, this was brought to my attention by someone who had been trying to get an answer/response from Lewis about this for weeks. That was what prompted the post.

That would have been good info to know, too. Can you see how reading your post without knowing some of the background could lead to the conclusions I had? (you know, those of us who are semantically impaired) :-)

RT, that’s fair. But please know (and I’m sure you do) that I don’t post without a lot of forethought and at least a modest amount of research into the backstory. :)
