Shut Down the Innisbrook Media Center: Ishikawa +12 in Round One
What can you say when a guy shoots +12 on the PGA Tour other than, "Well, at least you know what you won't be doing this weekend." (Answer: playing golf.) Ryo Ishikawa - now a high school graduate - flew over to the United States to play in the Transitions Championship and get ready for the Masters. At least he'll get to see Innisbrook for two rounds. After firing 83 today, Ishikawa will assuredly miss the cut at the Transitions Championship unless he shoots 59 tomorrow.
Ishikawa is dead last in the field of 144 players. That is massively disappointing to the large Asian golf media contingent flocked in Tampa to obsessively follow Ishikawa's every move. AP's Doug Ferguson estimated that half of the media center had cleared out to cover Ishikawa today.
Clearly, it's an aberration for Ishikawa. The kid is probably absolutely exhausted from graduation, flying thousands of miles, and trying to play golf. That said, the proverbial kid gloves applied to Ryo's performance in the first round is much different than the treatment John Daly got last year at the Buick Open when he shot 88 (which would have had him banned from the LPGA Tour if he were a lady).
Daly is on the decline. In fact, he's known more now for tweeting than playing golf. Ishikawa is all business, but had some kind of letdown today. He will certainly rebound, though unlikely with a cut saving sub-60 round tomorrow.
