A General Misconception About Cursing & Throwing Clubs on the Golf Course

I am guessing every radio and TV broadcaster or director has what is known as a "delay button". It allows you to cut off the audio and/or video if something occurs that should not occur. Usually, it catches curse words or off-color statements before the audience hears or sees it and the broadcast station gets fined. Ask The Greaseman, Don Imus and Howard Stern if a delay button would not have saved them a lot of hassle and a few million dollars.

Men and women have been throwing golf clubs and cursing since Robin Williams the Scots invented the game. Last week I saw a golfer playing in the WGC-CA at Doral toss a club after his bunker shot failed to extract itself. There is a pretty chance he may also have murmured an expletive or two. I forget his name because he was probably on camera a total of 11 seconds from Thursday to Sunday. I am also supposing 97% of all club tossing and cursing occurs when the cameras and microphones are elsewhere. I would also suppose if a golfer had the camera on him 98.5% of the time, he might caught occasionally tossing his club or cursing. And, that is just not fair.

When Tiger returns, I feel TGC and the networks have a responsibility to use the delay button to maintain non-prejudicial use of the cameras and microphones. I doubt he curses or throws a club ever again, but, if he does, the delay button should be utilized immediately and general public should not see or hear about it.  I think that is only fair.

There are no stats kept on the club throwing/cursing phenomenon, so any attempt to state one golfer is worse than any other golfer in this area is ludicrous. Though, some may try. Like Perry Mason used to say, "It's hearsay, your honor". Per minute on screen Tiger may throw clubs less than any other professional golfer on the planet.

It's time to stop picking on this poor guy. After all, he has not had sex in almost 111 days

Isn't it funny

how Tommy Bolt was almost admired for his club throwing, swearing and antics on the golf course? There was no peer to Tommy when it came to losing it, but he’s now one of the legends of the game. I wonder with the passing of time, that the same thing will happen to Tiger and his travails on and off the golf course.

OEG – terrestrial radio operates on a delay system (the button is called a “dump button” – it gets rid of 15 or 30 seconds of sound through the system) Live television doesn’t operate on a delay – which is where we get such thrilling moments as the “wardrobe malfunction” at the Superbowl, and all kinds of little goofs and gaffs and verbal fireworks.

Some shows, like the Oscars, Emmy’s, BET awards, Hip Hop awards, MTV awards – shows where the people who will be on think they are being cool and radical and “rock n roll” – giving the finger to da man.

From the stories I have heard about Bolt – he wasn’t “admired” for his outbursts. He was admired for his talent and play – but the behavior was just tolerated because of his ability. They are now the stuff of legends – and people of this generation find his behavior funny.

FIRST, OEG,

your spreading rumors here…do you know for a fact that TW hasn’t had sex for 111 days?..remember, no one knew he was sneaking out nightly and getting it… and CG, I knew Mr Bolt personally and he was a gentlemen and one hell of a mid iron player…I don’t remember the tournament anymore, but it was a par 3 over some water, and the other two guys hit and on the green..each got applause from the gallery…Tommy, resplendent in his cashmere sweater and alligator shoes, feathered a 4 iron up against a slight breeze and closest to the pin…no applause…he stood there for a few seconds, than said to his caddy…go get the ball pads, I’m walking in…these dumb asses wouldn’t know a good shot if it hit them between the eyes…he walked in, got fined the 100.00 and really didn’t care…He had all the shots and could play with anyone…STUB

didn’t mean to imply he wasn’t a gentleman 99% of the time. that’s a great story ! too bad guys can’t say things like that today.

CG,

When the Bolts lived in Florida, I was supposed to go down there for a week and work with him on the irons….His wife called just before I was going to leave, and said not to come as he had the flu, and would reschedule….Your right, it never got rescheduled, and I never did get those lessons…I heard he is now living in Arkansas, but I don’t know for sure if he’s even alive…IMHO, even when he did throw a club, he was still a gentlemen…He had a face, that made you think he was tough…I always liked how he called every body “Paads” with a drawn out A.,..STUB

Bolt would throw clubs and swear on the course…and he’s looked back on as a gentleman. Tiger does it and he’s the scum of the earth. A double standard ? To some extent. Biggest difference is this thing we’re typing on. Bolt would have the same reputation as Tiger if he behaved that way today…and Tiger’s behavior wouldn’t be reported by every bored, lazy “journalist” trying to make a name for himself so he can save the planet and stop global warming if Tiger would behave better.

How about the Texas Rangers’ manager, Ron Washington, who was caught with cocaine in his system during a league drug test ? LAST JULY !!! Yet the story just came out this week. The Rangers and MLB wanted to keep it quiet in order to not embarrass the man any more than necessary…along with the team and the league. 40-50-60 years ago, the media had a little respect for people and their privacy. They didn’t want the players or the game to be embarrassed just because someone made a mistake or didn’t follow every rule of elite, private society.

Now Washington has a target on his back because some idiot reporter wanted to make a name for himself and get on ESPN.

Terrible Tommy passed away in 2008.He was 90+. I never knew the man, but I think I would have liked him. From what I hear , almost everybody did. Pretty damn good plyer too. Won a US Open I believe………………………….Z.

I used to slam my club in the ground at times...I thought it would release the tension.

Did it hell, it made it worse ! At my age now, I’m ok with it more…I don’t expect the perfect shot..I may accually be maturing at last !

The betablockers have reduced

but not eliminated my club-slamming/curses – but I’m hypocritical enough not to do in front of anyone other than my husband/longterm playing partner! Now I save it for those really really duff shots which follow “After the Lord Mayor’s Show”.

OEG ?

TW should get another entitlement ? I think not. The easiest and best solution, ( that I have mentioned over and over and over again ) is for the networks to give equal coverage to at least the top 12 or so players on the leaderboard. That would make many a golf fan very happy and eliminate having to see one player throw clubs and curse so much. taaaaaaaa daaaaaaaa Sometimes common sense is the right approach.

Pro, just so I understand your solution,

you are saying if Brian Gay is T11, networks should give him equal coverage to Phil Mickelson playing in the final group.

My goofy post suggesting networks cut away when Tiger curses or tosses clubs or that Tiger actually tosses clubs less than most other golfers was tongue-in-cheek. But, I think you are serious.

Are you?

I'll keep an eye out for you...at www.oneeyedgolfer.blogspot.com

I am serious

Top 12 guys meaning that like 3 guys are tied for the lead, 2 tied second, 4 T-3rd ect ect. not meaning the guy in 12th place or better.

He is the most watched most golfer in the world

and nobody is saying he can’t curse or have a few tantrums.

What people are saying is that Tiger needs to stop doing it often and that is NOT an unreasonable request.

It seems every tournament we hear him cursing constantly or throwing things down or across or somewhere

Time to grow up
