Stricker: "It's amazing how good golf transpires into being a smarter person"
The quote of the day from yesterday goes to Steve Stricker, who was speaking with Fanhouse's Mick Elliott about the reaction to Stricker's thoughts from last week that Tiger should not make the Masters a sideshow with his comeback bid.
Here's what Stricker told Bob Harig of ESPN:
"Whenever he comes back it's going to draw a lot of attention to that tournament and the focus is going to be on him coming back. I don't know if Augusta would like that to happen, you know? To turn it into Tiger's comeback instead of the Masters Tournament itself."
In Elliott's follow up, Stricker goes all existential on us in saying, "It's amazing how good golf transpires into being a smarter person. A few years ago, nobody cared what I thought."
Back before Stricker became the first back-to-back winner of the Comeback Player of the Year award on Tour, his opinion would have been lumped in with the other rank-and-file on Tour. Now that he's second in the world, Stricker is the de facto number one until Tiger Woods comes back in a few weeks. His opinion is relevant.
The funny thing, though, is that there are plenty of lousy players that are often quoted by media because they're outspoken. Geoff Ogilvy was a great quote before he was a great golfer, and is still the rare bird that is both today. Joe Ogilvie is just a great quote. John Daly talks to anyone who will listen, so people cover him.
Steve Stricker really seems to have an appreciation for what he has achieved and what comes with the territory of success. Maybe that's something he can impart on Tiger Woods in his return.

that’s not existential – it’s observational…and pretty darn funny, too.
but you confuse me with the second part…“plenty of lousy players…often quoted” ?? Daly has 2 majors…and I haven’t heard much of anything from Joe Ogilve in a long time. The media doesn’t bother to spend time with the lower ranked guys, so we don’t know what they think.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Daly’s a lousy player now. Ogilvie gets quoted a lot whenever the PGA Tour wants to do a new policy of any kind.

And, yeah, Stricker was dead on with what he said, which makes it hilarious.

I'll just never get used to...
…people who can’t break par on the local muni calling multiple major winners…or anyone with a PGA Tour card…or any other tour for that matter a “lousy player.”
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
At least with me, whenever I made sort of outlandish sounding comparisons, it’s always with (relatively speaking) after it :)

Hey CG,
what’s this March Madness you wrote about? Is that going to be a new event somewhere? when?? Purse? open or invitational?…STUB
CG, a golf tournament
running for 2 weeks? is this some kind of new concept??…STUB
Are you putting us on?
Round ball? where some guys try and throw a oversize baseball into a vegetable basket? Godamighty, CG I had you pegged a bit older than a collage guy…Don’t tell me your one of those kids that take off their shirts and paint themselves (whats the Gawga Dawgs colors?) and sit in the stands and scream like women with PMS. Don’t they call them the Sports Bar Stool sitters, cause they can’t do? Lordy, Lordy, it’s a shame, but some just can’t play the game…(j/k)…STUB
HEY now – that’s a PEACH basket – and no red and black in the NCAA this year (lol) And you have to admit – nubile young college coeds screaming beats drunken moron screaming “get in the hole” or “you da man” any day. :-D
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
So what your saying court is
Usually the people that yell that at tournaments are TW fans. Will they also be kicked out of Augusta this year ? I doubt it. But I bet some guy wolf whistling at some hot babe off in the distance will get bounced out, as the security people will assume it was a stab at tiger. go figure.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
I don’t EVEN want to go there…didn’t even bring up TW ! (but doesn’t it sound like good idea just on principle to boot all those “get in the hole” and “you da man” yay-hoos ?) :-D
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
If there is one thing that irritates me about golf
it’s some jerk shouting “in the hole”…even beer is no excuse !
Wouldn't it be heaven
if the camera could zoom in on these idiots and everyone else stood aside and pointed at them accusingly. I want to see the marshalls advance on them like stormtroopers and ……… just a little daydream – sorry.
Dammit, though, I still haven’t had the…. um…courage… to shout out “Bad lie, huh?” to that old misery-guts (mis) teeing off in front of me. Oh whoops, is that going to bring me bad karma next week?!
CG, when do those "nubile young college coeds" you mentioned
take off their shirts and paint themselves….THAT, I would watch….STUB
Where is the party,
Easy and I want to know….STUB
I am not sure I really understand his point
People that are friends with Tiger get more PR because of Tiger
People that win and/or are Top 5-10 players get more PR
He is both so people listen to him more….seems obvious
Good to hear that Tiger Woods is coming back to golf.
I can’t wait to see him get back on the putting green where he belongs. I am a huge golf fan and sports blog fan and I followed Tiger’s rise and fall. Many online sports sites are saying that he will never be back to his best, but I think Tiger can do it again. Once a champ, always a champ.
I believe it was Daly
and it may have been even before him. I’ve attended several PGA tournaments in my time and I would estimate that a fairly large percentage of people attending are not golf fans or Tiger fans, or even watching the golf at all. They’re mostly attending to socialize, party, and people watch. Hard to blame this all on Tiger, they’ve always been around.
Fight for your opinions, but do not believe that they contain the whole truth, or the only truth.

When is Lent ?
I’m gonna try giving up something new this year.
"pain is only weakness leaving the body"
Jumpin, you
giving up anything would be NEW….lol brudda…STUB
