Here's Why We Miss Tiger Woods in Golf

After watching Ernie Els play safe at 16 in the final round of the CA Championship, I was reminded of why Tiger Woods has been so awesome for golf. This video from the 2005 Doral event - then the Ford Championship - of Tiger driving the same hole is proof in the pudding.

Thanks very much to the Scott Gutterman at the PGA Tour for finding this for me.

Waiter ! An order of reality, please....

oh dear god – here we go again

YES – it’s fun to watch someone go for and pull of a shot like the one in the Tiger video…but that is NOT a final round video…most of us could tell by the lack of a red shirt and black pants, even if the video didn’t say “3rd round”.

BUT – Ernie is NOT Tiger Woods…is that too obvious ? Ernie is FORTY YEARS OLD !! He hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since he tore up his knee. Tiger has what, a dozen wins since that shot ? He has seen leads evaporate in a big hurry. Big leads can disappear in the blink of an eye on the closing holes at Doral. Schwartzel wasn’t really close, but if Els started making mistakes, Schwartzel wasn’t going to back up with him. Els heart must have felt like it was going to explode coming down the home stretch.

Job #1 – win the tournament – show off later.

And no – Tiger would not have gone for that same shot on a day like today. The wind was not howling like it was today at Doral. The Tiger of today doesn’t have that same swing you saw in that video.

The video had nothing to do with it being a final round. I didn’t care that Ernie played it safe in the situation. It made sense. But, the hole inspired the memory.

“After watching Ernie Els play safe at 16 in the final round of the CA Championship…”

Why do you bother watching golf on TV if the only thing you think of is that Tiger “would” have done it differently ?

Ryan,

You must think we really give a big red rats behind what El Chito did in the past…This was the Big Easy, coming down the stretch for the first time in 2 years…I just kept saying “GO BIG ERNIE” It’s brings a lump to your throat and a tear to your eye to see good guys win…Why are you living in the past….STUB

I was jacked up for Els’ win. (I called it earlier in the week in fantasy golf picks.)

That doesn’t mean I can’t be thinking about other stuff while it’s happening. Anyone hear of this basketball tournament that they put on every year with 64 teams? It’s madness!

ahhhhhh ? Ryan

If you were pulling for Els to win on Sunday, how come you had him on your fantasy bench and Stricker on top ? You are wagglers stragglers correct ?
Not trying to cause trouble here, just curious.

RB – occassionally, I have the thought of wishing I could run some blue-hair driving 15 mph on the highway off the road – but we have these filters that tell us NOT to do things. We don’t have to say or do everything that comes to mind. (ducking) :-D

(and yes – I’m a wuss for not going double or nothing on the GT v UM rematch on Friday !)

I was wondering the same thing STUB

The past is the past. # 16 was driven this week by at least two other players without a mention here in. JB Holmes was one of them and it was quite windy. One of the many reasons I left the golf channel blogs was because of all the constant need they seem to have over there for making TW comparisons to everything and because every other article over there is about TW and it gets quite old after a while. I am still hopefull that this is not the case over here at waggleroom. I don’t blame Ernie for laying up, going for the win on Sunday as nobody will look at the W in the win column down the road and think, hmmmmm, I wonder if Els laid up on 16 ?

Accually, Progolf the headline made me feel like I was on the GC site.

There is no need to be sensational here…we are a reasonable people most of the time, lol.

That was a great shot Tiger played, Ryan but impossible ?

Big hitters do that all the time. Jack did it once on a dog leg hole over woods and sunk the putt for an eagle. But he was chasing George Knudson, who won, so had little choice. I was more impressed when John Daly hit driver , 1 iron onto that 630 yard par 5 at Baltusrol. His 2nd shot went 300 yards with a 1 iron. Untill then, that was impossible.Tiger can be exciting at times because, like Seve, he is rubbish with a driver most of the time. Miss Tiger ? Only the media does.

The Big Easy.......

Strikes again in Miami. That’s 2 for 2 this year. First the Saints came marching in, and now Ernie conquers the Blue Monster. Well done Ernie. Phil Who?

Nice win for the consumate professional.

It is worth noting that this was Els’ first win in America since he tore up his left knee in 2005 and had total ACL reconstructive surgery. Geez, sounds familiar doesn’t it ? Brad Faxon has never returned to form after having the same left knee ACL surgery. He did a fair job with NBC from what I heard. Hope it works out for Fax, who is truly one of the nicest guys in golf…………………….Z.

I e-mailed ya brother. The fight in Dallas was cool. 50,970 people on hand. thats half the stadium filled. Biggest attendance for a fight in the USA in 20 years or so. And some people say boxing is dying since the UFC started. Total not true. Any “real boxing fan” will tell you that. Some of the “fringe” boxing fans that only watch when a brand name is in the ring think differently. hmmmmm,,, sounds familiar just like with golf. LOL

Hey Jumpin...what did

you think of Smiley Jones edifice? Really kind of cool, but hope ya didn’t buy anything, cause you’d a had to mortgage your GF if ya had…I can’t get into the fist-a-cuffs thing too much…I guess it goes back to having the snot beat out of me in the 4th grade by a guy twice my size that I called a couple a bad names…I got in a couple of good licks, but that was all…To add insult to injury, because I tore the knee of my pants I got a licking when I got home…My mother darned the tear and I had to wear those pants the rest of the school year…It was reported here by all the TV sports guys, that the fight really stunk…what say you….STUB

I thought the stadium was awesome. We were in the 14th row at Ringside and could see around the entire place. Quite large as stadiums go. The first three undercard fights were just awefull, so we sat up in one of the bars after the first one and tipped back a few. Pacquiao was good as he threw over 1,200 punches in the fight. None of which hurt Clottey at all. Clottey had and has a great defense in the ring, but his offence stinks like a cow farm on a 100 degree day. He did hurt Pacquiao a few times though, but very few times at that. I didn’t pay for the tickets so , I didn’t feel so bad about it not being such a great fight. Spent the night in Dallas and was back at Doral by 10:00 am.

Yep

We were more under it. No need to watch it on the screen when your only 14 rows back. I even ran into my ole pal Vinny Paz. I used to drink with him in my fighting days at the old Biltmore Hotel in Providence, RI

Good for Ernie!

And no, I don’t miss Tiger one bit. How about Poulter…..almost everyone in the top 15 in our group benched his sorry +6 butt on Friday, then he blows it out on Sunday(-8). I benched him, but had McDowell to replace him and he did very well over the week-end.
