Dave Stockton's Son Wants Johnny Miller Off the Air

Let's skip the introductions.  Seems like almost everyone hates Johnny Miller, though maybe not as much as some despise Jimmy Roberts' essays.  Fans have been bitching about Miller from the very start.  Today, he is accepted as just one of several cogs in the wheel holding back NBC's coverage of golf.

And Facebook is the perfect place to organize in a futile attempt to share your opinion about the things you hate.  That's why someone started the Facebook group titled "Golf Fans who want NBC to retire Johnny Miller & replace him w/ Brad Faxon."

JOIN: Check out Waggle Room's Facebook page!

Fax has been around for, what, a week?  And people already want to crown him as the new man at 18 tower.  Among those clamoring for a rapid change in the booth? Putting guru Dave Stockton's son.

Now, if only someone would start the "Dan Hicks should lick wife Hannah Storm's sexy boots everyday because he still is employed" fan page, then we would be all set.

LMAO !!!!!!!!

wow – finally, an intriguing reason to join Facebook !

I don’t know about replacing Miller with Faxon – Fax still sounds like he’s talking in his sleep, but a lively voice is something you can develop. (you didn’t think Kelly Tilghman always sounded like a Basso Profundo from the Metropolitan Opera, did you ?) :-)

I really like Faxon’s energy so far, and he’ll grow into the job.

John Madden is the guy.....

They need a madden. What with the sound effects, and the telestrator. He hits his drive “pow”, he sinks the putt “plukah” we need some fun in golf. Bring on Madden!

I like Johnny Miller

Sorry to say ryan, but not everyone hates Miller. I for one find him informative, intriguing and not afraid to criticize players. Not every announcer should be as combative as Miller is, but when you win 25 PGA Tour title including a U.S. and a British Open, you have earned the right to question a player’s decision when you are a golf announcer. He may be over the top at times, and has said some things that he shouldn’t have, but then again who doesn’t? At least he isn’t Lanny Wadkins. I don’t have to worry about falling asleep to Miller, as i did to Wadkins when he was in the booth for CBS.

by dbagley on Mar 14, 2010 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

That’s why I said “seems like” not an authoritative verb.

Wadkins was boring for sure. At least I know I’ll scream at Johnny on the TV cause some of the dumbest stuff that I’ve ever heard on TV comes out of his mouth. Some of it is very poignant, though.

Here's one...

…for the “Things I Never Thought I’d Type File”:

I’m not nearly as annoyed by Miller as I used to be – and by “used to be,” I mean as recently as last year. i don’t know why – surely miller hasn’t changed, so it must be me. Perhaps I’m surlier than I was before, so I don’t mind as much Miller’s constant (and not always accurate) critiquing.

He still says things that irritate me to no end, but I’ve come to regard that as part of my afternoon’s entertainment, yelling at the television and calling Johnny every name in the book.

Heck With All of Them

If I want a lobotomy, I can find easier ways of getting one than watching cable news on television.

It is a collection of vapid bottle blondes and unemployed political blowhards that have to take the most sensational position possible. They seem to think that discourse is yelling over each other, and they have the same nuance and subtlety as a boa constrictor squeezing the life out of its prey.

That’s not just Fox News. It is all of the cable news networks. CNN, MSNBC, you name it, they are all rubbish, all the time. Fair and balanced, right. Pravda said the same thing. Most respected name in news — well, that’s relatively speaking, CNN.

And the finance channels, with their Jim Kramer and puffy lipped CEO sycophants like Maria Bartolomeo, they are just as bad. If you want to lose you rear end in the market, follow Jim Kramer’s buffoonish advice. If you want to listen to a reporter figuratively wrap her lips around the staff of a CEO, watch Maria.

LOL – sounds like we need to get Heather (seamstress extrordinaire) to design us some Johnny Miller voodoo dolls so we can either throw the doll at the TV, or stick pins in it when he says something dumb.

In England I am grateful to watch live events around the world.

before cable TV we only had 4 channels and saw sport on a Wednesday or a Saturday. Watching the PGA tour every week with Miller on the mike never bothered me. Anyone with an opinon puts their foot in it from time to time. Miller does often. The ads you Americans have to put up with are far more irritating. I know they pay the bills etc. There aren’t many good announcers around in any case. After Peter Alliss they are all 2nd rate anyway. Wayne Grady, who won the PGA in ‘90 does a fine job here in Britain, much better than Miller, as Alliss’ understudy. He would do a fine job across the pond. I’m surprised no one from the US has snapped him up.

by Easingwold on Mar 15, 2010 10:36 AM EDT reply actions

EZ

Miller is continually ranked #1 by US viewers. I like his bluntness. Shows me he’s honest. There will only ever be 1 Peter Alliss. He is terrific. Faldo is coming along, but I wish he’d be a little more to the point , more often. He sugar coats it too much. And that,….w-o-m-a-n , arrgh,… Kelly Tilghman. Good Lord, will somebody stuff a sock in her yap already. She annoys the hell out of me. TGC fires Vince Ciullini but keeps Tilghman ? What were they thinkin’ !!!………………….Z.

Like I said, I don't mind Miller

and being honest these days is a lost art. Faldo, whom I admire, does dress it up a bit, but will say what he thinks at least. Kelly ? Can’t stand the woman. She bores me more than Nantz and thats saying something.

I liked Ben Wright a lot. He was great but unfortunately his liquor loosened his lips and he was sacrificed on the feminist altar for his sins.

But the man knew the game and he could describe more about the action with his paucity of words than Gary McCord could ever dream of.

by Old Man Par on Mar 15, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I will never understand...

…Miller’s “bluntness”, as 3 puts it, when what he says tells you that he believes that the players intentionally made a bad swing or the bad place their ball ended up was where they wanted the ball to go.

Thanks John – telling us that hitting a ball into the lake is a bad thing is SUCH good broadcasting.

Court......maybe the networks need a "stupid meter"....

that would keep track of all the stupid comments. Maybe a SPH (stupid per hour) rate could be established to give us a way to measure each of them. The Superbowl was a good example, as are most sporting events. I don’t watch the MLB channel, so I can’t comment on their good announcers. I think most of them are just not that good, but I guess we are stuck with them. Thankfully my remote has a “mute” button.

I keep wishing for a side band (like the Spanish translation on a lot of channels) that just has the ambient sound from the stadium or golf course or whatever – just something without the announcers. Since I’m dreaming – why not a microphone specific control so I can listen to Faldo, but not have to put up with Tilghman or Lerner ? :-)

You’ll definitely want to tune into the MLB network on Wednesday so you can catch up on the Braves’ during Spring Training.

Court,

I’ll pass on the Braves training camp. I’m a fan of the Rockies from my days in Colorado and going to games there, and also an Astros fan from years back. I don’t keep up with it much anymore…..probably the problem is that on 10% of the players speak english…..whatzzz up with that???

lol – it’s like the LPGA – I don’t really care that they don’t speak much English – as long as they don’t boot the slow roller or swing at the hat high fastball.

When I was in the states in the '60's and '70's

I grew up listening to the late Chick Hearn of the Lakers…and there was a Dodger announcer I can’t remember but he used to the "Farmer John " ads between innings…anyone recall him ? I liked both.

I give Johnny Miller credit

He is at least himself and very candid about what he says." NEVER REHEARSED" like the talking bobbleheads on TGC who are agenda based to promote certain players most of the time and belittle the rest of the players on tour. You don’t get that from John. Though I don’t always agree with all of his comentary, he calls em as he see em. Nothing more nothing less. “AS IT SHOULD BE”

Miller is top-notch; no soft-soap. Faldo is not too bad, but thinks he has to be a comedian to be competent. Nick, let the stand-up routine go. Johnny needs only to tell us what he sees and how to put it into three dimensions.

Faldo has to attempt comedy,.....

look who he’s stuck with ! Now, how about Miller and Faldo,…hmmmm. Wonder if that would gell, or would it explode ! I’d say they could be huge. Faldo was great workin with Azinger. He always managed to one-up ole Zing. Miller would definitely hold his own, and that might elevate both to a higher level. Are ya listening NBC ???,…..go for it !……………………….Z.

time for new blood

miller longs for the gold ole days of golf. constantly references tour players from 20 years ago.. faxon knows the players.. give the man a shot… johnny miller’s o.k. i guess.. he never shuts up.. he’s talk over the entire broadcast.. i say FAIL.. Faxon for the WIN!

by sfbaygolfdude on Mar 15, 2010 11:45 PM EDT reply actions

you don’t seem to have listened to Johnny very closely – he longs for the good ol’ day because he WAS the good ol’ days. the guy never made a mistake in a tournament and he hit every shot pure. How he ever lost a tournament shooting 54 every round is beyond me. :-)

But when it really counts, Miller is usually right

When it comes to making the big calls in big situations, i.e. Mickelson at Winged Foot in 2006 playing the 72nd hole, Miller was spot on, as he usually is in those scenarios.

by dbagley on Mar 16, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

Miller was “spot on”….because all he talked about was in hindsight. A blind man could have done what Miller did. Oooo – he shouldn’t have hooked his tee shot…OOOooo – he shouldn’t have tried for the hero shot…OOooo – he should have just pitched out into the fairway….Ooooo – he threw away three shots on that hole.

followed by “when I was playing….”

now THERE’S insight

Court,

I like Miller, but the one that gets me is when he talks about the caddie giving the yardage to the pin, and how when he was playing real well, he would ask for the distance to the “foot”…..he was serious……a “little” over the top. Also, I like his explanation of grain…..Look at the shadow and the grain goes the other way…..well, that’s true sometimes, but sometimes grain runs with the draining of the green and sometimes it’s to thick to move with the sun. He’s not perfect, but I’d rather listen to him than most of the others.

I’ve heard that yardage thing before…but always from him. Always sounded like ripping off the old Hogan story about his caddy telling him the shot was 135 or 136.

But I’m glad you enjoy him.

Monty was paired with Langer in the Ryder cup

Monty told Langer that the pin was 124 yards from the sprinkler on the fairway. Langer asked was that from the front or the back of the sprinkler ? Monty couldn’t believe it. Then Langer hits it to 4 inches to win the hole and Monty just shakes his head. True story according to Monty !

Miller was a fine player who had a few hot years.

But he can never be considered an all time great. His head went a bit and it hasn’t quite fully recovered :)
