I Have Been Dishonest With Myself

I made a promise to myself earlier this golf season. I swore up and down that no matter what, I would remain as interested in the PGA Tour as I ever was... with or without Tiger Woods.

The task seemed easy enough; stars were abundant on the Tour, including the likes of Anthony Kim, Sean O'Hair, Phil Mickelson, etc, etc. The game was bigger than any one man, anyway, so why couldn't I just continue watching golf and enjoying it as much as I ever did. I love this game, and just because the world's number one wasn't on the fairways wasn't going to keep me away.

Then one tournament came and went. Then another. And another. There went Torrey Pines. There went Phoenix. Wait, the World Match Play already happened??

I could stand behind my own personal lie no further. I had been dishonest with myself from the very start, and I had to come to terms with my mistake in order to move forward.

Simply put, the PGA Tour sucks without Tiger Woods.

By no means do I wish to put down any of the other professional athletes on Tour. These guys ARE good (or so the slogan says) and provide hours of impressive talent on courses that boggle the golfing mind. And frankly, it has been nice to actually watch live coverage of the tournament leader instead of on a tape delay because Jim Nantz was too busy talking about Tiger's shot on 2.

But who are we kidding here? The man is the greatest golfer we have seen in a generation, and love him or hate him, people will continue to watch whatever it is that Tiger does on a golf course. I'm pretty sure I would even watch if he was simply in attendance at Bay Hill. That excitement just isn't there anymore whn watching coverage of an event. There are no huge crowds following one group because of one guy... and if there is, it is because there isn't anyone else worth following.

Say what you may about this entire sex scandal. The fact is, he Tiger has basically done all he can do up to this point. He's apologized both publicly and privately, he's paid the consequences of his actions in terms of sponsorship and family, and has entered rehab in order to make sure this thing doesn't happen again. Time for this guy to get back on the course and start winning tournaments again so everyone can put this situation in the past.

Chicago, let me write a prescription for

you here….You need to do this for 5 straight days, and then that feeling of lonesomeness will be gone….1)…Mix a 5-1 Martini with 3 olives and a well chilled glass. 2) Mix a 5-1 Martini with 3 olives and a well chilled glass and 3) Mix a 5-1 Martini with 3 olives and a well chilled glass…I personally have used this to heal myself from some bitter disappointments, and I can tell you it absolutely does not work, but when recuperating from the Martini’s, you won’t think of your lonelyness….lol…STUB

Simply put, the PGA Tour sucks without Tiger Woods ??????????????

Well thats just your opinion. Sorry to hear you feel that way. Personaly I have enjoyed the telecast much more without TW and I know many that agree with that sentiment. Currently I’m down here at Doral and it’s packed even though the weather is poor and its only Friday. TONS of GREAT talent in the field this week with plenty of Brand Names on the leaderboard even for the casual fan. I have yet to even hear Tigers name mentioned in any conversation amoungst any of the fans or players or inside the ropes associates. I was in Scottsdale amoungst the 300,000 plus Real Golf Fans in attendance. Last weeks Honda set a record for attendance at 100,000. Mr Duffer I usually like most of your blogs , but I can’t agree with you on this one. Apparently your a TW/Casual fan and thats ok, golf needs you as well. The only people crying foul or care if TW is playing are the media and the fringe fans. The rest of us here in Doral are having a great time and the weekend looks to be “FAN” Tastic.

I of course agree the tour most certainly does NOT suck without Tiger. But with that said, the fact remains that the tour is most certainly “better” with him playing, there’s simply no escaping that. To say otherwise would be to indeed fool ourselves. By the way, not sure I agree all of those 300,000 fans in Scottsdale are “real golf fans”. I would say a fairly large percentage of them are party seekers mostly there to drink and make a fool of themselves. At least that’s not how I would define a “real golf fan”. Lastly one can be a real golf fan and a Tiger fan at the same time; he is after all one of the greatest in history so fans of excellent golf can easily find enjoyment for his play and appreciate the historical context of his greatness.

As usual tigerhead I agree with most of what you said.

There isn’t much that we do not agree on. Some say boxing stinks without Floyd Mayweather as he is the TW of boxing. The real boxing fans disagree as attendance tomorrow night for the Pacquiao vs Clottey fight at Dallas stadium is 45,000 so far with PPV sales probably exceeding all expectations. I’m looking forward to it and then back to Doral.

indeed we do and I respect your views. It’s quite alright if we disagree on a few points; disagreement is good. Enjoy the fight tonight.

With all due respect...

… I’m not sure how many casual golf fans decide to dedicate an entire (paid) blog to the sport, however you are certainly entitled to your opinion. For what its worth, and as another reader already mentioned, if all 300,000 in attendance at Scottsdale were “real golf fans”, I will eat my hat.

Good golf is good golf, but drama is something Tiger does better than anyone else in the sport.

I can't argue with that Chicago..

but they way he has been doing it the last few years leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Cursing, spitting, almost like a brat. No grace, no autographs, no congradulating YE Yang when he beat him. There is almost a contempt by Woods towards others. For those reasons, to me, the drama means very little and if the networks show the other players a bit more, there would be plenty of drama. In the last 15 years in world golf, Normans capitulation against Faldo at the Masters and Van de Velde’s implosion at Carnoustie were just as big as Tigers 1st Masters win. Drama does not mean Tiger alone. The media would have us think otherwise.

LOL Life is good, the tour is strong, and everyone is happy even though the weather stinks. Tomorrow looks to be a better weather day. I have no doubt that EM has no doubts about me. I have doubts about your LPGA pick O da year though. 3 and out so far. hehehe. I’m flying up to Dallas tomorrow afternoon for the Pacquiao vs Clottey fight tomorrow night at Dallas Stadium. Just like with Golf some of the doubting “fringe boxing fans” proclaim that attendance is down in general. Nope not true. Tomorrow nights fight in Dallas has 45,000 in attendance so far. Biggest card in over 7 years and thats without Mayweather fighting. Mayweather is the TW of boxing. I’ll be back at Doral by 9:30 am on Sunday. jumpn/progolf

Man o man

John Hawkins of TGC just made a statement accusing the media for so many different scenerios regarding tigers return. HAHAHAHAHAHA Like he or the Golf Channel have room to talk. He and they are the biggest groveling droolers on the topic. In fact he made his own prediction on the Grey Goose 19th hole 2 nights ago. What a joke TGC is. Pathetic. Gee wiz,,, My dog could take a stab at Tavistock, Bay Hill, or The Masters. Brilliant deduction you buncha overpaid hacks. Hmmm if he doesn’t play in any of them I wonder what event they will pick next. Perhaps they might go with a long shot and go out on a limb and predict something like, the “Caddy, Member/Guest” at Ferncroft or the “Ladies of the Red Hat Society Open” at Bushwood. hahahaha

Progolf, if you tell you personally do not care

if Tiger returns anytime soon, you are merely delusional.

If you are trying to tell us from your experience in Arizona and Florida it is the feeling of the majority of golf fans around the planet, you are delusional and a fabricator.

And if you meant this, “Apparently your a TW/Casual fan and thats ok, golf needs you as well”, when you commented above, you are an arrogant, delusional prevaricator…

But, thanks for perking me up.

OEG – I’m not sure you’re right about Pro’s comments from the Florida / Arizona swings. He was talking to people who paid or were given tickets to the tournament and they took the time to go watch. If they were as Tiger-centric as you’re making most golf fans out to be, then attendance would be down.

The thing about the match play is that the tickets are limited because of the size of the field. More tickets can be sold to full field events because there is play on all 18 holes basically from sunup to sundown.

Phoenix ? Tiger doesn’t play there anyway – why would they care ?

Doral ? same basic small field as the match play – so it is strong and there is plenty of good golf to see. I’m sure they would have liked to see Tiger, but the Tiger-centrists won’t be there, making the “I don’t care if he’s here or not” numbers go up.

Attendance is up in most places. The Tiger-centrists are sitting at home because their hero isn’t there. The only thing they’re affecting is the TV number – and Pro wasn’t doing a TV survey. He didn’t say “the majority of golf fans on the planet.”

OEG mate

No worries on my end as you and everyone else have the right to an opinion on the topic. Name calling and being insultive to other blogger/commenters isn’t my style, but if it works for you so be it. I just come in here and report what I see and here and if that isn’t real enough for you than I would suggest tuning in to “groveling central” @ TGC.

Hawaii was great!

We only played twice and the round at Kualalai was in 40-50 mph wind….the worse I’ve ever played in, but a great course. Since we only played twice, we didn’t take our clubs and used rentals, which was an adventure in itself. Love the lava rock….they are such beautiful courses. I would go back in a heartbeat……Food was great and no low rounds.

I feel sorry for people that can’t look beyond the Tiger effect. I agree that having Tiger in the field makes things interesting, and even though I wouldn’t put him in my Top 10 favorite players, I continue to marvel at his abilities. It’s definitely fun to watch.

I really don’t understand golf fans that dismiss all of professional golf unless Tiger is a part it. But I guess you have to find whatever holds your interest.

Count me as one who is grateful to have any golf to watch on TV.

and I apologize, it was 42%, not 41%. My bad.

Did you doubt my veracity…???

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/2010-03-15-masters-3d-tv-ratings_N.htm

PGA Tour: WGC Sunday, 3:15
2.1 (1.6 million) NBC

The comparison: Down 42% from last year, when Tiger Woods played a typical dropoff when Woods is absent.

The spin on the spin: Networks petition gods on Mount Olympus to return Woods to their airwaves.

OIC the ratings for TV at precisely 3:15 pm on Sunday.

As it says in the article. I knew there had to be a USA Today catch somewhere. The coverage begins at aprox 3:15 EST on Sat. and Sunday usually. Most people who watch golf, especially the “Casual or Fringe fan” turn on the set at the begining to check the leaderboard. I was at Doral this past week, working inside the ropes ( all four days ) and even though the weather was crappy the “Golf Fans” turned out in large numbers exceeding last year by about 17%.
