Mahan Wins With Ping Eye 2 Wedge, Sort Of
I thought this was a pretty interesting twist on the Ping Eye 2 wedge controversy.
According to the article, and discussion on Golf Channel during play on Saturday, Mahan just likes the look and feel of these wedges - so he had the grooves modified so they would conform to the new rule.
You have to like a guy who is willing to go that far to help the Tour during a tough patch, AND his game at the same time.

I thought,
and correct me if I’m wrong here, but don’t the grooves go back to the old law suit and conform according to that?…If so, why would any modification be necessary?…are these a different type wedge and groove….man, this is getting more confused than a mother inlaw at Christmas time….As he is a Ping Tour Rep. they could make him any wedges he wants….jist sayin,,,,STUB
the pre-1990 Ping Eye 2 wedges with the box grooves do not conform with the new groove rule – but they are legal because of the law suit. Technically, there is no need to do anything to the grooves – I just thought it was cool of him to avoid the controversy and have the grooves altered to conform to the new rules.

how did they get altered? were the old grooves small enough to allow the tooling to completely redo them? STUB
I see what your saying,
but knowing how persnickety the tour gets on the specs of grooves, space in between, depth, shoulder, radius etc, etc, I wonder how the grooves could have been redone…I guess it would take a Frank Thomas explanation….STUB
