What Frank Nobilo Just Said is Inappropriate & Not Funny

During Golf Channel's telecast of the second round of the Northern Trust Open, Frank Nobilo was manning the highlights of Steve Stricker's impressive 65 that put him into second place.  Then they cut to a Scott Walker interview with the humble Wisconsin native, then a commercial.

Coming back from the break, Nobilo said that "while trying to add humor" to the highlight he made an inappropriate remark, then apologized.

I was stunned (a) because Nobilo is really good at what he does, (b) why does this keep happening on Golf Channel, and (c) I had no clue why Nobilo was apologizing and I saw the highlight.

I had to Google around to figure it out.  Thanks to astute Golf Channel viewers for listening closely enough to hear that Nobilo said Stricker had a shot of "230, Chinese dentist time."

STILL not offended and totally unaware of what he meant, I Googled that.  Apparently, 2:30 is called that because two-thirty sounds like "tooth hurty."

Ok, now I'm offended.  I'm offended because not only is it an ethnicity joke on national TV, but also because there is nothing remotely funny about it.  The joke is on the level of Carrot Top bad.  Gallagher bad.  Gallagher II bad.  A bad pun?!

…I really hate this about our country. taking up offenses for other people…even if we don’t understand what the heck was said. Nobilo is from New Zealand and they are a lot more comfortable giving and taking humorous jabs.

RB – you admit that you didn’t understand what was said, and you didn’t understand the joke. The guy said he probably shouldn’t have said what he said…go have a beer and relax. I’m pretty sure the Chinese won’t be invading SoCal or Orlando over it.

You beat me to it Court.

I just wonder (and marvel) at how PC we need to be these days, or should that be anal? How could anyone possibly take offence at that? The only thing offensive about it, is that it was funny the first time I heard it 20 years ago and that means I’m showing my age.

Seinfeld reference for everything...

Jerry: I wanted to talk to you about Dr. Whatley. I have a suspicion that he’s converted to Judaism just for the jokes.

Father: And this offends you as a Jewish person.

Jerry: No, it offends me as a comedian. And it’ll interest you that he’s also telling Catholic jokes.

Father: Well.

You people don't think "tooth hurty"

is hilarious? You never had kids? That’s always the joke my 5-year-old son told after 43 consecutive equally funny knock-knock jokes.

Ryan, you went to a boy’s private high school in Baltimore City and, “Ok, now I’m offended. I’m offended because not only is it an ethnicity joke on national TV…”.

And, then you try to go back on what you wrote with, “Boys, I’m more offended that it wasn’t funny than anything”.

And, then you try to close with, “…if you’re gonna make a joke that’s potentially offensive, make it so funny that no one even cares that if could’ve been offensive, right? The ole Family Guy tactic”.

The trick I guess is to determine what is “potentially offensive”. At best, that effort is a moving target that moves more every day…

The Northern Trust Open

Does any one care that there have been two rounds of this tourmament? Does anyone care that the #3 three golfer in the world is tied for the lead? Has anyone noticed that Phil posted a fine rebound score today, or that David Duval has made a cut? Does anyone care that 3 time major champion Padrig Harrington is right on the cut line or Fred “I never met a wedge I didn’t like” Couples will play the weekend? Is the latest member of the Golf Writers Association of Amnerica auditioning for a slot at the STAR? Enquiring minds want to know! But Ran, thanks for researching this issue….

The golf media keeps fluctuating between political correctness and bigotry against Asian golfers. Why no uprorar when Mark Reason posted his garbage?

And members of the media do make fun of how some players talk. I know from my time working the Stanford Intl. in April 2008.

Definition

bigot- a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Is making fun of how one person or a group of people speak an act of intolerance? Something is causing it, in Nobilo’s case he probably thought he was being funny, in others it is bigotry. Like what I heard around the press room.

by Bill Jempty on Feb 6, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

Bill, I know I'm new here, but......

Please don’t confuse bigotry with racism – Websters not with standing.

To my mind, small as it may be, a bigot is someone who will not waver from their opinion or belief, no matter how the facts may well dictate otherwise. A racist is a different kettle of fish all together and needs no explanation here.

To even imagine that what Frank Nobilo said, was a racial slur, is a stretch beyond even the most fertile of any mind – bigoted or not. Due to the fact that I’m not bigoted, please feel free to sway my opinion with something substantial.

I guess I'm in the minority here...

but I think Nobilo did the right thing by apologizing.

Nobilo is from New Zealand and they are a lot more comfortable giving and taking humorous jabs.

Nobilo works for an American company, following an American tour. He should (and to his credit, has) abide by American

How could anyone possibly take offence at that?

Now can anyone take offence at a joke pointed directly at the stereotype that Chinese people speak English with an accent? Are you saying you would feel comfortable talking like this to a Chinese acquaintance?

Frank was trying to be funny.

Forget the fact that he failed; Nobilo’s job description has nothing to do with funny. He is supposed to use his knowledge built from years as a touring professional to tell me about flier lies, putting with or against the grain and getting stuck on the inside, not try out his material for a five minute set at the Orlando Laugh Factory.

For all those who trot out the ‘the PC Police have gone too far’, I have two questions. Doesn’t everyone watching a PGA Tour event have the right not to be insulted in the least? If not, is everybody fair game? Can Steve Sands compare a difficult greenside bunker to Auschwitz? How about comparing the Bear Trap at the Honda Classic to the Bataan Death March?

Golf commentators should leave the cutting edge comedy to Jim Norton and Chris Rock.

it is possible I am cranky due to being snowed in

Two – should we assume that in your job, you never make jokes or lighten the mood or do anything outside the parameters of your job description ? Never say anything that sounded good when it popped into your head and came out of your mouth, but upon further reflection probably shouldn’t have been said ? (if you haven’t – you’d be the first guy in history to have that record…especially with women)

comparing a bunker to Auschwitz ? That doesn’t even make sense.

It really doesn’t matter what you say these days – if you look hard enough, you’ll be able to find someone who will be offended. Should we just outlaw communication ? Should everything be written down and run by a politically correct language lawyer before a word gets spoken ?

Nobilo thought about it and apologized – relax. Maybe go outside and make a snowman – work off some of that frustration…or turn on the weather. I’m watching an NBC guy who thinks that his leg from foot to knee is 2 1/2 to 3’ long…which would make him about 12’ tall. Hmmm.

I have made plenty of off color jokes, but my job isn’t speaking on camera (I actually do work in broadcasting, but not in front of the microphone).

The bunker/Auschwitz reference was a horrible joke; both are hard to get out of.

I’m actually more annoyed at some of the comments to the story than Nobilo. I think the apology is enough.

Well, I guess i grew up in an environment where people gave and took as good as they got. It made for people who didn’t take themselves, or light hearted jabs by others, too seriously. It was a nice place to live. I pity a world where everything we say, think and do, has to be second guessed, just on the off chance that someone maybe slightly miffed. I get the Kiwi jokes all the time. Am I offended? Hell no! I have a sense of humor, not a sense of self righteousness that would have me complaining about a light humored moment taken out of context.

Nobilo wasn’t with friends when he made the ‘joke’, he was working. There is a difference. Plus, we don’t know if Nobilo meant the apology or not. Perhaps he says that all the time with no offense meant, then someone said ‘Dude, you just insulted Chinese people’ during a commercial. Nobilo accepts that even though he didn’t mean to insult anyone, his words did just that and apologized.

If Nobilo accepts his comment was innapropriate, why is anyone stating it was appropriate?

Ryan,

I belong to a couple of groups that are bitterly insulted on a daily basis. If I spent all my time being offended, and being angry, I’d never get anything done. The “victim” mentality that has swept our country makes every word a potential insult, and in the name of “political correctness” most tend to buy into it……I’m not buying it. See my reply to TXQ below, about the dark horse…..just an example of how silly it can get.

The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Feb 6, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions

Em

Even if I grant you the victim mentality argument (which I don’t), what specifically happened with Nobilo doesn’t fit the bill.

If Jay Leno makes a joke mocking a group I’m associated with, that is one thing. He is a comedian, he hosts an entertainment program, it goes with the territory. Frank Nobilo is an analyst for TGC. Nothing in the description of his job includes anything that shoudl get him in the same zip code of a comment that could offend an entire ethnic group.

I’ll make an analogy. A couple of years ago, ABC filmed a scene between Terrell Owens and Nicollette Sheridan where Sheridan, dressed only in a towel, removed the garment and jumped into Owens’ arms as a intro to Monday Night Football. Groups howled at the scene; both the NFL and ABC were forced to apologize.

I wasn’t offended in the least with the scene, but I can understand a person who doesn’t like sexual images on his or her television becoming very upset when he turns on a football game and gets a racy scene. It is a bait and switch he or she didn’t bargain for.

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

two......WHAT?????

The TV scene was intended to be “racy” and provocative, and they knew it would be offensive. I’m sure they aired it knowing they would be apologizing. You’re comparing apples and oranges(not to be offensive to fruit)….but there is nothing remotely similar. And please show me the exact “rule” that allows Leno to be offensive but not Nobilo. You see, the problem is each person or group gets to choose what is offensive, or inappropriate, or insensitive, based on their need to be offended or as I said….the “victim”.

The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Feb 6, 2010 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

There is no rule...

and frankly, Leno is about as risque as plain oatmeal. But I digress…

You are right, each person or group gets to choose what is offensive, or inappropriate, or insensitive. And the general public can choose which complaint to take seriously. If the public thinks the complaint is ridiculous (most of PETAs complaints, for example), nothing happens. If thge public thinks the complaint has merit, pressure is brought on the actor.

A question for you em. Is there any insult that can responded to without being considered a “victim”?

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

two....

absolutely. Your example about the TV piece…they knew it was provocative!…..Anytime there is INTENT of insult and being offensive with the desire to hurt is different…….but Frank’s comment doesn’t fall into that category. I don’t know you, but I could call you a number of derogatory names with the intent to insult you and you would have every right to be offended……There’s got to be some common sense here.

The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Feb 6, 2010 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

So if you swing your arm and hit me in the face, you shouldn’t apologize because you didn’t intend to hit me?

That is what Nobilo did verbally.

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

that's reaching indeed......

Intent always plays a role in sentencing. Murder 1 is much more severely punished than accidental homicide. Yes, the victim is deceased, but intent determines the punishment for the violator. This instance required an apology, or atleast an oops, then move on. IMHO.

"The game is swell when it's played well."

by Fairways and Grins on Feb 6, 2010 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you F&G...

regarding the sentencing. My point was intent isn’t the totat factor. You can injure with no intent to, they are called accidents. You would still apologize after accidentally hurting someone.

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

I believe I am right on..

You contend intent is the most important factor in determining the validity of an offense. I contend harm can be inflicted even if intent isn’t there. Some of the most hurtful thinks one person can say to another are said absentmindently. How many heart felt apologies have started with ;I didn’t know…?

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

two.....

Remember that thing about being thin skinned……anybody that gets hurt by an absent minded comment is a whiner and a "victim.

The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!

by em66 on Feb 6, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on the comment...

just becasue a comment is absent minded doesn’t mean it isn’t hurtful. For example, if you make a joke about ‘damn cancer’ comment after coughing to someone who lost a family member to cancer recently, I bet you would apologize after finding out.

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

two.....you are way to far from where we started...

it’s obvious we need to be careful what we say to you……as you are probably waiting to be offended. I’m done.

I'm witcha.

There is nothing that sucks the humor out of life faster than the PC police. If we can’t laugh at each other then we live in a pretty sad country. As a minority, I ‘ve had the needle given me in fun and took no offense. I’m also very capable of dishing it out with the best of them. Notice I say “THE BEST OF THEM”, and I mean that in a good way. I laugh at life, and enjoy good natured barbs. Nothing wrong with that at all, unless you a “whiner”. As for Nobilo’s comment,….it went over my head until reading this blog. Can’t say it was funny, but neither was it offensive, Go Saints,…make me some $$$ !……………………Z.

So, now when I hear a joke

I have to ask you if it is funny and okay to laugh? Tooth-Hurty IS VERY FUNNY! Old and infantile, but funny. When your first child tells you that joke, you’ll laugh until you cannot laugh anymore.

Frank Nobilo is a breath of fresh air in a stagnant industry.

Will you call me un-American if I think the top 3-4 golf TV personalities are NOT American? Otherwise, I am a racist traitor. A disabled Vietnam War Era Veteran

Nah, that’s not the point of what I said at all. (I’ve noticed a lot lately that people read what they want into things, hence the discussion that comes out of these posts.)

I’m telling you that I don’t find his joke funny because it was lame, but if you find it funny, more power to ya.

Just finished watching "Men in Tights"

Robin Hood spoof – full of politically incorrect innuendo – and hilarious. “From now on all toilets will now be known as Johns”. American Johns, arise in indignation!!!!

By objecting to Nobilo’s remark it seems to me that (in your heart of hearts) you believe the Chinese are ethnically INFERIOR to Americans and therefore shouldn’t have jokes made about them, whereas jokes between ethnically equal races are OK. Think about it.

by WendyUK on Feb 6, 2010 4:15 PM EST reply actions

Wendy......Great Point!

I’m just not getting this. Ryan said….

.I’m offended because not only is it an ethnicity joke on national TV, but also because there is nothing remotely funny about it.
Now, unless he is Chinese or a Comedian, I don’t know why he would be offended. I can understand where he might think it inappropriate, but even that is a stretch for me. A whole lot of hooooooooooey, about nothing.

"Men In Tight", which I love...

is a movie produced by Mel Brooks, co-starring Dave Chappelle. It is a comedy, not to be taken at face value. Not the same as agolf comentator sprinkling in what could best be considered a silly joke.

As for your second point, I don’t have a problem with risque, off-color or ethnic jokes, in the right venue. During a recap of Steve Stricker’s round is not the right venue.

by TwoNuse on Feb 6, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

twonuse....Go ahead and make us

a list of venues where it is permissible to tell “risque, off-color or ethnic jokes” and also let us know which groups we can insult. The list needs to be complete, as we would not want to miss insulting someone who is on the list. You see, political correctness is very subjective and is usually never the same for any two people or groups. One other question, if I’m in a venue that is ok for off color remarks and someone is making a lot of racist remarks….is he a racist or is it the venue???

The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
