Pavin Chooses His Four Assistant Captains for the Ryder Cup
Yesterday, Corey Pavin (unblock Alan Shipnuck, please) announced his four assistant captains for the Ryder Cup in September. He went with Davis Love III, Paul Goydos, Tom Lehman, and Jeff Sluman.
Slu and Goydos have never played in the matches, Lehman was the captain of the '06 team that was crushed at the K Club, and DL3 has played in six matches and is likely to be a captain himself one day.
Though having no experience at the Ryder Cup, Sluman was an assistant captain to Jack Nicklaus at the Presidents Cup on three consecutive occasions. For Goydos' part, he was a surprise pick, but is a very popular player who is smart and funny.
European captain Colin Montgomerie - who has really been egging on Tiger lately - said he will wait until after the Open Championship to announce his assistants.

yes…thank you thank you thhhh….what ? my name’s NOT on the list ? nuts… (lol)
Paul Goydos ? Jeff Sluman ? Love those guys – gotta be personality picks
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
CG: You're right!
and Davis Love and Tom Lehman as the absence of personality picks…
quiet doesn't mean no personality
so if somebody doesn’t slam clubs, scream, or fist-pump – they don’t have a personality ?
Davis Love III and Fred Couples made up one of the best match play teams the US has fielded. Lehman has a lot of match play experience to pass along, and won’t run off at the mouth.
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Whoa there cg;
Please don’t confuse a bad personality with…personality… Lehman and Love are fine players with lots of experience, but they’re no Martin and Lewis…
Thank God. Lewis was hysterical until kids
reached the age of reason.

bad choice of entertainment duos – Martin and Lewis had some serious feuds over the years.
are the assistants supposed to be there for entertainment value ?
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
How about they're no O'Reilly and Beck?
Now they’re funny.

I expect the U.S. team to be a
no-show without Michael Jordan.
attn: WendyUK
Do you know who Michael Jordan is? No fair Googling….
Jordan ? I know most will argue with me, but Chamberlain was more dominant..
but that idea who wins the rings sticks it seems. No one player won a championship on his own.
I was merely knocking MJ's presence
at the last international matchup, Easing.

Well, he did use plenty of
petrol with his golf cart.

pssst – electric carts
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
not just for the event – that’s the way things go in San Francisco
"this ball will fit in that fairway"
Hah! Fuel for criticism indeed.
All while trying toss in a British term.

Here's a hint, Wendy: Jordan was
terrific on the fast brekkie.
ONLY because he was at the last Ryder Cup
which was a bit weird – but there you go. I think I would make a good mascot for a basketball team, whatever that is.
First I'd better google "mascot"
to make sure it isn’t British for some kinda meal. If it is, no doubt you would make a good one.

Putting four to the floor seems like
overkill, no? Is there that much to do as assistant captain?
TX,
doesn’t every captain need 4 goffers?…Just like Monte to make us wait….gawd, I’m biting my nails in anticipation….Easing…don’t forget, I want to know what type competition your playing with the new sticks….and the results….and, your really dragging your BW along to that club?…do they have a spa where she can hang out whilst your carving up the sod?…If its not young Rory now, Wendy won’t have a clue…STUB
The only club my BW is coming along with me
is Royal St Georges down in Kent next month…she is not into sport, but it is my birthday. She is even walking the course with me. I won’t be tipping her, I’m still carrying my bag, lol.
Easing,,
you mentioned some other place on a winter rate for 20 quid and you said WE, so I assumed (dumb ol me) that you were taking the BW and having that awful breakfast you mentioned….are we going TIGAR on us?…I wouldn’t even begin to be like TX and say “who would carry Wendy’s bag”…let us know about the competition next week…what kind is it?…seems awful early to be competing, unless it was in bar room betting,,,STUB
Dunno who said "Who would carry Wendy's bag" but
it wasn’t me.

Just winter comps, Stub...usually Stableford format, non qualifying for handicap.
I’m in a winter fours knockout, last 16..need a bit of luck in that one
Wendy:
Nice to hear you appreciate Goyos and his humor. He truly is one of a kind out there among the “flat belly”, “cookie cutter” golf pros. I believe it was hast year some time there was a very good article in one of the golf magazines about the personal tribulations he’s had. If I can find a site I’ll put it here on WR.
I always root for Goydos whenever
he’s in contention.

Thanks Ping - I had read this Feinstein story before
but good to be reminded – makes all the whiners sound pathetic, doesn’t it?
Goydos didn't promote his story...
He didn’t offer it as an excuse for poor play. There are probably pros out there right now dealing with crises, we just don’t know about them. But the Tour isn’t an equal opportunity crisis exploiter. The PGA Tour spun Phil’s personal problems into “Pink Day” at Colonial last year. People don’t want to hear the sordid tale of a drug addicted wife and her suicide. Compared to that, breast cancer is much easier for the Tour to deal with, but both are devasting.
I know what
you mean about the shopping Easing…My late wifes battle cry was “CHARGE IT”…STUB
