Fantasy Crystal Ball: Northern Trust Open
Last year, this tournament got underway in the shadow of the financial crisis and criticism of the tournament title sponsor over their (involuntary, so they say) receipt of TARP money. This year, an off-course, but golf related story drives headlines.
Phil Mickelson won the Northern Trust Open last year and is going for a three-peat this year. Were it not for Charles Howell III in '07, Mickelson would be seeking a fourth straight win at Riviera. Needless to say, despite my feelings about how he has handled the wedge situation, he is a pick this week. He's worth it.
I'm liking a Steve Stricker sighting this weekend, too. Riviera requires precision off of the tee and a lot of attention to pace around the greens. Stricker can do both very well.
It makes sense to have Robert Allenby on the squad this week. He's not only playing well lately, but has a good record at this course. He won the event in '01 in a massive, six way playoff. I'm going to keep Charles Howell III on the B-list roster for the same reason.
Out of mere curiosity, I'm going to put Jim Furyk into play this week. His last American start was a win and I think he's set to have a good year after several in semi-hibernation.
On the C-list, I'm taking Mike Weir. How in the world this guy is on that list is beyond me. He has won this tournament twice, in consecutive years. And I'll round out my team with Rich Beem because I loved his hole-in-one dance from a few years ago.
That's this week, but January was a good month for fantasy golf. Below are the top ten for the last month! The winner should contact me via email for delivery of their Slotline putter prize!
1. IH8UOFA (778)

Ryan,
you failed to put my team up there in 75th place….this is like golf, the lower ya go the better?? NO? well now is a fine time to tell me that….CHEEZE….STUB
Em is hot on my tails after a great week last week. Stub, what is your team name? Which group are you in? I was feeling pretty good about my 8th place spot until I remembered there were 2 groups. Sigh.
I hoping I can rebound this week – hopefully Harrington will be my ace in the hole! It may be a mistake to bench Phil, but I’ve got to think Stricker is going to post some low rounds, too! The pressure!!

RED,
this whole thing is driving me crazy…well not driving really, more of a short putt…My team name is (and if ya laugh, it’s 10 lashes with a wet noodle) RAGGEDS. I don’t know anything about groups…hell, I’m lucky I can still tell the players without a score card…Don’t even give EM a thought, and your tail will be ok….After this weekend when the Saints take a dive for a TKO in the 4th round, he’s going to be reduced to a sobbing mess….I think Court is kinda going with them dounut eaters too….IT’S THE COLTS GOING AWAY PEOPLE,,,MANNING RULES….STUB
Just remember, it’s a new month, so you can win again this month!

Stub.....I didn't see your
Raggeds on our list. You may be on the other one, but I didn’t see it there either…..You may be in a group by yourself, which means you would have won the month……….lol
The Saints are in the SUPER BOWL....WHO DAT!
What's this
AGAIN thing your saying…do You mean I have won before and you never gave me credit?…I just get no respect….if I didn’t have bad luck, I’d have no luck at all….STUB
HEY RYAN,
read em’s post from 11:30 am….does that mean I won? and where’s my putter?…STUB
Anybody watching Dubai ?
Crazy weather over there with the wind whipping up all the dust. You can’t see half of the new super skyscraper.

In the worst sandstorms
the traffic would come to a complete halt as you wouldn’t be able to see a hand in front of your face. I’m surprised they didn’t get more grit in their eyes – ouch!
some of them did – bunker shots into the wind were brutal with all that sand in the face

I heard it was such a sandstorm that all the greens
were against the grain(s).

Man, I really hate it when I think I’ve picked someone and it turns out that they are my alternate! I thought I had Couples on my squad, but there he sits as my back up…shoot!
Go Steve Stricker!!
PS Ryan, I really do like the posts sorted by category!! It is so much easier to find the posts I want to keep up on…thank you for doing that!

wow - look who's playing well...
….T-12…Jesper Parnevik. All those what-if’s about Tiger and Jesper playing together might not be so far off. Maybe his back is feeling better finally.

Congratulations to...
Steve Stricker!!
On behalf of my fantasy golf squad…THANK YOU!!!! It felt good to find my footing again – the free fall down the leaderboard has slowed down…at least temporarily. :-)
Now the question is – is it Mickelson this week or not?
PS – congrats, Em, on the Super Bowl…I thought of you yesterday!
