Tiger's Coming Back in Two Weeks? The Facts Don't Support It
Mark Hayes of the Melbourne Herald Sun out of Australia becomes the first journalist to just up and decide when Tiger Woods is definitively returning. He says in a piece that Woods shocking return will be in two weeks at the Accenture Match Play Championship.
The article is so poorly written, it's actually hilarious to read.
For one, this was probably just made up because Tiger returned from knee surgery at this event last season. So, of course, that is cited as evidence that he would come back here also.
Then, since Accenture is the title sponsor and they dropped Woods, it would only be fitting for him to return at their event.
Further, Woods has won the Match Play on three occasions. Then again, he's won Bay Hill on six different occasions, four times in a row at one point, and each of the last two years. So rule that event out.
Those aren't even the funniest parts, though.
Hayes says that, "As a matchplay event, it's more for the purists than perhaps a 'regular' tour event would be, diminishing his chances of being harassed."
If by that he means that attendance is generally low, he may be right. But when Woods is playing, media and attendees can attest that pretty much every hole on the course is evacuated of fans except the one Woods is on at any moment.
The best part is that Hayes doesn't know what "match play" means as evidenced by this reason:
"[I]f he was to play badly in round one, he could "disappear" again rather than sit in the glare of the media spotlight until the mid-tournament cut."
Were Woods to return and lose in the first round (or second like he did last year to Tim Clark), then he would just leave Arizona. It would be over for him. One and done. Way to do some reporting on that, mate.
While we're at it, I could add that since Phil Mickelson and his wedges won't be attending Accenture, then Woods can be the center of attention!
In other words, Hayes made up a whole bunch of stuff, didn't even cite an "anonymous" source like the celeb websites would do, and then the New York Post picked it up for their front page.
And if it just so happens that Woods does return in two weeks, then I still won't give props to this guy.

I saw that this AM on my daily google search for Tiger and I thought the same thing as you, Ryan….no way Tiger’s coming back for a tourney sponsored by a company that just dumped him! I’ll go on record that Tiger returns at Bayhill in Orlando….not that that’s going out on a limb much, everyone else in the world is predicting that also.

The column is bad
but much worse has been written. Hayes pretends to ‘know’ what Woods will do and has to know he’s putting his neck out on the line. That takes some chutzpah.
Be careful Ryan, disagreeing with what a golf columnist writes may get you a bad name. Either from the GWAA or some of Waggleroom’s commenters. Got a football helmet handy just in case?

In French it is "le weekend"
In my indisputably (because I say so,) dulcet tones – it is indeed “the weekend”.

In the States there's a genre of limerick that begins
“There once was a man from Nantucket …” and always ends up in the X-rated category. I was just trying to let you know that my poem was not of that ilk.
It was kinda like your golf swing — sheer poetry.

Nantucket ref. too cryptic for me
I believe we have limericks of a similar genre. However, you would have to rely on Easing for confirmation.

seriously ? nobody’s going to take Doral ? Park that dingy (Privacy) off the coast and boat in every day ? Big dollar, limited field ? Beuhler ? Beuhler ?? :-D

Ryan, it is called speculation
………and not only is it legal but many people do it. as far as the Accenture thing goes, he acknowledges that they dumped him but he believes that he may play there in spite of that because the pros outweigh the cons.

You know gopher, that would be a classy move for Tiger, now that you mention it. I would like to see him do something like that. Also, I’d like to see him take Watson/Nicklaus advice and do a public apology somewhere before he plays anywhere. A little humility would play well in Peoria, not to mention the rest of the country.
by niblic on Feb 3, 2010 3:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Freeze, I don’t mind speculation, but he didn’t phrase it that way in his piece. The NY Post had it smattered on their front page this morning saying “Tiger to Return in 2 Weeks” or whatever. So, what this guy wrote as fact with no backup got picked up to be in front of the eyes of millions of people.
I would’ve been ok with the piece had the guy phrased it as speculative. But he didn’t.

I’m still sticking with my prediction that Tiger will dip his toe in the water before he shows up at a tournament. There will be a fluff interview somewhere with him saying how he wants to just start to put it all behind him and work hard on his game. Shortly thereafter, a return will be announced.
So far, the guy has not been seen in public since Thanksgiving. He’s not just going to suddenly materialize at a tournament venue.
I wouldn’t be shocked if it’s the Masters, but I also wouldn’t be shocked if he doesn’t play any event this year.
