Ocho Cinco & Cinco Nueve Meet Up at ESPN: The Weekend
In Orlando this weekend, a bunch of sports stars convened in Orlando for ESPN: The Weekend at Walt Disney World. While I don't care much about broadcasts of a bunch of ESPN shows from Orlando, one picture stood out for me.
Chad Ochocinco posted a picture of him with Annika Sorenstam.
Both are sporting clearly fake gold medals. While Ochocinco can never win a gold medal in football (and I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a future in track & field), Annika could hypothetically win one if she were to make a comeback bid in time for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

those look like real gold medals to me – not Olympic medals of course….I just don’t know what they are for or from.

"this ball will fit in that fairway"
ESPN is the “title sponsor” for Disney’s World of Sports. They had all those athletes and personalities down there for a really cool opening to the baseball season. (the Atlanta Braves play spring training at Disney) They have all kinds of sports fields and just hooked up 48 HD cameras that will cover all the fields, so if you or your kids are playing in a game and you’re staying in a Disney hotel, you’ll be able to watch on TV in the room later on demand or you will be able to buy a DVD of the “broadcast”.
It was a huge party where people got to meet some of the athletes.

I wish the Bravos would move back to West Palm.

I’m sure there have been a few years when they wish the same thing – they had that 15 year run, but the last few have been pretty spotty.

True dat. but as for me, I am no fan of ABCDESPN and hate that the Bravos (my life-long favorite baseball team) are in the ESPN clutches yet get treated badly on Sportscenter all during the regular season. It’s not special treatment I look for…really, I think that ESPN’s Red Sawks – Yanquis fetish short-shrifts nearly all the other teams, my beloved Bravos included.

well – to be fair – it wasn’t ESPN when the Braves moved to Disney – they have had spring training there for what…5 or 6 years at least ? ESPN just took over.

No, I don’t think so.
ESPN was bought by ABC in 1984, and ABC was bought by Disney in 1995.

Regarding a "comeback" for Annika...
(personally I love the idea!)…if the current Olympic eligibility system doesn’t change – being based on Official World Golf Rankings, how long do you think it would take for Annika to make her way back to qualify? Would she play for the US or Sweden? Honestly, I don’t see this happening, but if she did decide to make a run for the Olympics how soon would she have to get back on Tour in order to qualify through the world rankings? Just curious…
I write about golf at www.tees2greens.com, too.
The world rankings work on a two year cycle, right? So I would say second half of 2013 at a minimum so she could get some points. Her main competition is Anna Nordqvist today, but who knows who is coming next.

If Juli Inkster
can play so well at 49, no reason why Annika can’t make a comeback at some time and hope she will.
Don’t think it would be in time for the Olympics though – not a great fan for golf in the Olympics anyway
I’d have no doubt that Annika could make a comeback if she wanted to – I’m just wondering if she’ll ever want to…she has so many successful things going on and she seems very happy. But I would imagine that competitive bug never quite leaves the system…She was supportive of adding golf to the Olympics, so I could see her maybe wanting to be a part of that.
I was supportive of golf in the Olympics…until I heard how the players would be determined – it’s just another WGC event in my mind now.

Yep, it sounds like the key words are “if she wants to” and from all the looks of things, it appears she is not terribly interested in doing that.
Maybe Annika is wise – leave young and enjoy the things in life she probably missed while she was on tour. In other words, she worked to live and now she’s going to live well.
Can’t blame anyone for that. It’s not like this place is a theme park and I come here every day to have a good time. Oddly enough, they call it ‘work’ for a reason.
